I love reader feedback. Love it.
The hardest part about writing, at times, was wondering whether or not I was accurately conveying the intense emotions – the full range of life with my mom, Sue, that bobbed from hilarity to terror. Sometimes in a blink. I worried about giving enough of the backstory – just enough to set the stage without boring the reader. I worried about the balancing act that IS personal narrative.
I cannot overstate the joy I feel in receiving input from readers and knowing that I’ve been heard. Understood. And consistently, with compassionate, insightful comments and questions.
Recently my friend Erin, responded to this description of Sue as a tornado:
Sue was a tornadic force of nature…a big wind that forced onlookers to buckle down until the storm clouds passed.
Erin understood and commented:
“Sue was such an enigma. Upright and dependable at times, and then a roaring tornado at others. What a life you lived with Sue…”
Enigma. Yes, yes. I think Erin brought insight forward that I hadn’t considered previously. As I moved through my bumpy life with Sue, there was always an element of curiosity, a desire to understand the whirlwind of a woman who had capacity for love and kindness but so often led with destructiveness instead. Enigma. Thank you, Erin.
And while I’m on the topic…I’ll share that ‘enigma’ is the perfect word to describe the on-going marketing of my book.
As book clubs continue and opportunities for book signings and speaking engagements are on the horizon, I’m learning that one of the great mysteries…enigmas…in the Universe is Amazon rankings. 😉
Thanks to my publisher, Eckhartz Press (the exclusive seller of the paperback version), the Amazon categorization of “Surviving Sue” was updated recently. And guess what? I’ve cracked the “Top 100” – at least for today – with “Surviving Sue” nestled at #39 in the Kindle Store in the category of “Biographies/Memoirs of Social Scientists”.
I’ll take it! And I’m grateful to the GoodReads platform for the cross promotion and links to this very blog. Little bits of progress, here and there, as I continue the mission of sharing my story about Sue…yes, yes. “Surviving Sue”, enigmas and all.
Vicki 😊
