I’d Like to Thank…

I don’t know how it happened.  One thousand designs?  I mean…I know I’ve been busy creating promo materials for “Surviving Sue” and posting on my personal blog – right here on Victoria Ponders and partnering with my writer friends on Sharing the Heart of the Matter but 1000 designs?  Wow.

I took a gander and I’m glad I did.  Scrolling through my Canva designs and then peeking at Instagram (which, by the way, if you’re not following us there, you should:  @victoria.atkinsongroup and @the.heartofthe.matter) I took stock and came away with a couple of revelations.

My natural aesthetic is muted and monotone.  (Hello, black turtleneck wearing friends!)  Most of what I’ve designed related to “Surviving Sue” has been consistently framed in sepia-like neutrals.  Color stories and themes matter to me – perhaps going back to my ancient history and my love of art history or my brief career as a Color Me Beautiful consultant (I’m not ashamed) in the 80’s.  I know color…I have respect for color, but I don’t DO color unless I feel it’s necessary.

Which brings me to the observation about making graphics for friends.  It’s been such a treat to have insider info and ‘advance peeks’ at my colleagues’ posts on Heart of the Matter.  Writing which conveys vibrancy deserves an equally vibrant image for promo purposes.

As I scanned the colorways in the collage-like snips of some of those 1000 designs, I realized I enjoy color when I see a connection or an association.  A means to align with and be in accord with the story the writer’s telling.  I doubt I did it well most of the time, but I can see by scanning some of the images, I tried.  Designs that I made for myself for Victoria Ponders have occasional color but they’re not my most recent creations and they’re not the images I love.  Call me Mrs. Monotone.  I’ll answer.  I just know it. 😉

And the point?  None really.  I’m not looking for a congratulatory pat on the back, like the one that Canva sent.  Talk about made-up and goofy ‘you’re a winner’ awards!  But. Their ‘you done good‘ email slowed me down and made me think a little.  No matter how silly, awards are rewards, aren’t they?  Someone (or something in this case) noticed.  I like it.

In honor of Academy Award Sunday, I happily accept this honor and I thank all of those who’ve trusted me to create teensy images to honor their words and the readers who clicked in and read.  My privilege.  Now where’s my swag bag?  I’d like one of those – chock full of loot and freebies just like those the celebs receive.

Vicki 😎

P.S. If you’re wondering, you’re right. I hate the image Canva sent me — their “certificate” in baby blue hues. LOL!

    1. Aww…thanks, Michael. It might be that those “tiny trophies” and little certificates do matter…just like your kind words. Big smiles! 😎

  2. I need to know, since your award post coincides with the Oscars tonight, did you choose to eschew the black turtleneck dress for something with glitz and glamour? 😉

You know that I’m not on IG but I always loved when you sent peeks of the graphics for my posts. I thought, and still think, that they were very clever. I also think that I should have hired you out to do my visuals for the posts themselves, especially when I sort of settled on something in pixels even when it wasn’t quite right. Maybe your retirement passion job can be graphic design 🙂

    1. I know we’re far away…many miles…but did you hear me laughing just now, Deb?! You’re hilarious! Yes — I’m a gonna break out the sequins and baubles to sit on the sofa tonight. You are sooo funny. And thank you for the lovely, kind words. I think what I’ve done falls into the category of “If I can…anyone can” because I literally trip around trying to make images. Hope you’re doing well. Thanks for the giggles! 🤣🥰🤣

  4. I absolutely love your Canva images and how you use them on WP and Insta. Yours for “Surviving Sue” fit the book cover perfectly. Congrats on 1,000! It is a milestone and not silly at all. As far as the black turtleneck, Buff’s sister who is a professional violist posted on Insta of her playing a cover of Moon River, wearing the Audrey Hepburn black turtleneck. She’s promised to send a video of it so I can post it on WP. I can’t figure out how to post her Instagram video on WP….If you know how, let me know 😊

    1. You are so sweet! Thanks for the kind words. I can’t wait to see the video! Such a great question about how to post from IG to WP…I’m not sure…but there must be a way. 🥰

      1. Thank you! I haven’t figured it out yet, so I asked her to email me the video. She agreed. I’ll post it this week — if she sends it. She’s in NYC with @wavechambercollectiveNYC for a movie soundtrack concert tonight. She lives in Berkeley, so I thought she was in CA! I forget she’s plays all over the world 🌎

We all need a pat on the back from time to time, so take a bow. I think your colors on Surviving Sue matched your theme nicely. It isn’t the right book for oodles of bright, vibrant colors.

  15. That’s amazing, Vicki. Now I’m wondering why I’ve never received such an accolade from Canva. I’ve been using it for several years and I know I’ve created at least 1,000 Pinterest images on top of my regular blog post images. I wonder if it’s because I use templates. 🤷‍♀️

I feel like Barbie at last night’s Oscars. Oh the pain!
