What Do You See?

Well-chosen words add richness to my life… when I slow down and let them in.

I have a daily quote book that I love, but I’ll confess I’ve been remiss. Too busy to slow down and take a peek. I have favorites throughout – obvious when I see how the book is beginning to age with its faded cover and dog-eared pages. A gift from a dear one years ago.

Isn’t it remarkable how a well-timed dose of insight can feel sparkling and new? Even when you’ve read it a zillion times before.

Relevance is like that, I think. Fresh because it hits…the just-right spot.

That’s how I felt this morning with this perspective-boosting thought from my favorite observer of the natural world, Thoreau:

“The question is not what you look at, but what you see.”

-Henry David Thoreau

Over coffee a bit ago, the hubs and I enjoyed watching a brand-new chipmunk find her footing as she danced across our deck.

“What are these?” she seemed to say as she stumbled over her tiny paws.

Paws-ing 😉 long enough to peer at us, peering at her, I’m not sure who smiled more broadly. Me? The hubs? Or the tiny fluffball testing her wheels.

Yep. Just a little chippy, fresh and frolicking. That’s what we gazed upon. But what we saw?

Life in motion. Joyous. Simple. Fantastic.

Happy Friday – with love – from all three of us.

Vicki 😉

  4. The Thoreau quote is brilliant and the imagery you’ve painted of the little chipmunk is just precious. There really is so much beautiful and joy in the world when we simply pause long enough to take it all in. Happy Friday, dear friend! 💕

    1. You nailed it, Erin. It’s so easy for me to say, ‘aww, cute’ and move on, but she kinda commanded our attention…couldn’t look away. Big hugs back to you! 🥰

  5. Man, I need a perspective shift. I watch chipmunks all day long, and all I can think is, Great. Those little bastards are going to dig up the lawn. They’d better stay out of the garden!

    1. Hah! You’re right – I should add a “Part Deux”…in order to share that the little rascal found her way into a brand-new pot of annuals and had a field day…literally digging up the whole works. Only a pot, though…in your beautiful yard I can only imagine what a gang of chippies might do! 😜

      1. Gotta admit though, they’re pretty cute when they’re chasing each other around. Laverne and Shirley have a field day watching them!

  6. Oh some perspective. Yes so much needed! I know I can lose the forest from the trees if I don’t watch. Go little chipmunk, run and test out that newfound freedom!

      1. Forest from the trees. I love that saying but I always have to Google it because I’m always fearful I’m using it wrong. I always think it goes “trees from the forest.” D’uh!!!!! 😎😎😎😎

    2. That, and the wonderful Thoreau quote reminded me of the old saying “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.” Here’s to days of miracle and wonder?

  13. Finding the time to “paws” and take it all in is such a gift. Life is so rushed sometimes that when we do get the time to savour a good daily quote or the small life all around us, it does feel truly wondrous.

  15. What do I see? I see a cute little critter, but in all fairness must also mention that I see a menace who’s intent on destroying our front stoop. 😏

(And unrelated — and maybe a WP glitch or a chipmunk screwing up comment feed…but…I swear I just saw another comment from you, Ally…related to the “A” is for Ambivalence post and it disappeared. So sorry! I was about to reply to you but it poofed before I could read it. Oy!)
