Worthiness Reminders

I attended an author event this past weekend and it was fabulous.

I love learning from accomplished writers – especially when they share their secrets for maintaining motivation. But while I was there, in a room full of fervent fans and aspirational writers, my intuitive, introverted self was overloaded from the jump.

Choosing a seat in the back – but with a good view of the speaker, I could detach myself a smidge from the energy of the audience and take it all in.

The rush in the room was palpable – super-charged like lightening. Attendees bounced in their seats, eager to be near someone who scored not only multiple book deals but also TV and film projects based on his books.  You could cut the whoosh of wonder in the room with a teaspoon. A tiny one.

When the event was over, I barely had the energy left to ask the author to sign one of his books for me. Thank goodness for a dear friend who knows me…knew I was unlikely to chat him up about my book, my next project…my aspirations.

My friend slid in and talked me up to the author, turning to me with her encouraging eyes which said, “Go, go – he’s yours for a moment ” – as I asked a couple of questions. She knew I didn’t want to impose upon him…seeing myself as one of many, many.

How lucky am I? Pretty darn fortunate to have friends who appreciate my writer’s heart and understand my personality.  I hate being the one asking for anything. In most instances, I prefer to tune in, take care of others. Listen and watch. But it’s good to be reminded that I’m just as worthy.

Go, girl. Go.

Vicki 😉

P.S. You might be wondering…hey…um…where WERE you, anyhow and aren’t you going to tell us the name of the author you met, Vicki? You bet. I promise I will. It’s whole-post worthy. Soon.

P.P.S. Check out this link for more about my book about my mother’s complicated life. My tale of resiliency: “Surviving Sue”.

  2. Indeed I was going to ask but your PS cleared that up for me. An aside though, I too usually end up at the margins of a room like that to distance myself from too much energy and tension. You have a good friend who was able to get you into the bee hive without having to suffer the droning buzz.

I’m glad it was fulfilling, with a little help from a friend. Big question, Vicki: bee hive or cicadas?

    1. Ohhhhh! Great question! I’ll go bee hive – more benign. I had a cicada attack me…dive bomb style while driving the other day. Flew right into my ear! 😳

  6. Damn right you’re just as worthy. The author was lucky to have you in the room. Ha, ha, I get it. I would’ve had the same reaction, wanting to ask questions, but not wanting to impose or ask anything of the author. But who knows? Maybe the author has a story just like yours and needed to hear some encouraging words on the experience. It’s so hard sometimes to be an introvert in an extroverted world. Can’t wait to hear . . . the rest of the story.

      1. The writer has a parent that he’s struggling with. He read your book and now he wants to create a screenplay with you with a Sue-like character. Trust me. The crystal ball is telling me all of this. Today Surviving Sue, tomorrow a hit movie. 🙂 🙂 🙂 YOu never know!!!

  7. I echo Brian’s comments, although I couldn’t be nearly as creative! I would have the same reaction and then some to a full room of over-keeners! Great description, Vicki. 😊

  8. I can really identify with this, I hate to ask, and tend to step out of big crowds as well. we have to remember that we are not imposters and just as worthy as anyone else

I operate from the same school of not wanting to bother someone. As time has gone on, I often write to authors when their books move me. More often than not, they write back. It’s a reminder that most people truly appreciate positive feedback and questions about their work.

  12. Great post, Vicki. You’re definitely worth it. Sometimes we introverts need to fake being extroverts to get noticed. Your friend is awesome for giving you that gentle push.
