Santa Sue

(I shared a portion of this post a couple of years ago and couldn’t resist a ‘take two’ moment today…a smile about my complicated mother and her love of Christmas.)

My mom, Sue, was a party girl at heart and Christmas was her favorite holiday.

Even when money was tight, she’d find ways to rally people together with her infectious humor and charisma, often for a good cause.

Truthfully, though, any day could’ve been a dress up day for Sue. Here’s a favorite photo from my childhood – Sue, circa 1973, in a handmade Santa suit, whipped together by pulling an all-nighter:

Sue saved Christmas for dozens of disabled children the next day by stepping in for the scheduled Santa who became ill. It’s a holiday memory my sweet sister Lisa will remember forever.

Sue…Santa…Superhero

Sue was a terrific last-minute Santa stand-in. But the suit?  It barely held itself together for the party, but it didn’t matter. The little ones were thrilled to see “Santa” and only Lisa and I knew the secret.

Vicki 😊

  1. Oh, that Santa suit! Too bad it didn’t last long. . .

    1. You would’ve been in hysterics watching Sue as she “sewed” Joy. On her old Singer machine using a red drop cloth and trying to stich on batting from a quilt project she’d ditched. In the end, I think her Santa suit was glued together! 🤣💕🤣

  3. Sue seems to be an example of the complexity of the human condition. We tend to put people in simple good or bad categories, when they are rarely one or the other. Does Sue defy that, Vicki? Your call.

    1. You’ve captured her essence…complexity…perfectly, Dr. Stein. So many facets of Sue. Very true. ❤️

  5. I think Dr. Stein hit the nail on the head. Sue was a complicated person but. based on everything I’ve read, I get the impression that she had a great heart and the best of intentions. The signal was often disrupted by the noise, so those close may not have always felt it, but it’s stories like this that make me believe she was always making an effort. Happy holidays, dear Vicki! 💕

    1. Oh, Erin! Miss you! I think I saw a post from you recently that I haven’t gotten back to — to catch up on what’s new with you. Hope you know how much I appreciate your insights about Sue.…always amazed by your ability to synthesize. “Signal disrupted by the noise” is another gem. Love and big, big hugs! 🥰❤️🥰

Sue was a complex person. She makes me think about writing and how the most interesting characters are those who are complicated with their share of positive and negative attributes.

  10. What a great memory to have of Santa Sue. Do you think Sue could have been bipolar? My mom was very manic when I was a child and she’d pull many all nighters sewing. I had more than 30 dresses lined up in my closet. She was diagnosed with what was called manic depression at the time. As she got older, she lost the manic side and slid into depression.

    1. Thanks so much, Elizabeth. I so appreciate the things you share about your mom. Hard to say with Sue; her diagnoses were always the same – depression and anxiety disorders, addictions, but certainly she had moments when she was in overdrive to escape.
Sending big hugs your way. 🥰❤️🥰

  11. Oh Vickie, I simply L💖VE your mother’s zest for life. And to sew an entire Santa suit (which sewing is something of a lost art these days) is amazing. 🤶🏼 So happy to hear how she still made some very special children happy, despite her diagnoses and complexities. Thanks so much for sharing something so intimate yet so heartwarming too. Much love my friend. 🥰💖😘

  13. This post certainly brings me back to reading your book, with the over-the-top stuff that Sue did. Wonderful that she worked hard to put together the suit, then be Santa for all those kids. A lovely memory 🙂

  16. Over the years, I have learned of your mother’s challenges, but she was also given a gift to persevere in difficult times as in becoming an over night Santa Claus hero to a group of children. Cheers to the sweetest Christmas memories we all carry with us!

  17. I love the Santa Suit and Sue’s commitment to saving the day. Your Mom was so complicated. She is the hero in the Santa Story, and yet, after reading your book, I am aware of her many struggles. We are all complicated, and perhaps if Sue wasn’t who she was – Dr Vicki would not be who she is – I am thankful for all you do with your wisdom, skill, and humor. XOV

  18. It’s interesting to me how memories evolve over time, how the memory takes on new nuances and meanings as we age and our perspective matures. I know your mom had her challenges but also a generous and good heart and she made you! A true gift. Hugs, C
