I’ve yet to meet a memoirist who didn’t have a moment or two of panic about exposure.
Baring ourselves, our stories and hoping for understanding. Hoping that the notes of resilience and empowerment shine through.
I had those anxieties when I wrote “Surviving Sue“. They’d come in waves and torrents, but I carried on…ever hopeful that Brené Brown’s words would be prophetic:
“One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through, and it will be someone else’s survival guide.” —Brené Brown
Every time a reader offers feedback, I see the truth in Brown’s quote. I certainly felt that way this week when Edward Ortiz wrote the most beautiful, thoughtful review of my book. Here’s a sample:
I believe this book should be required reading for all new parents. It’s a book to read slowly, highlighting passages, taking notes, and reflecting on the life experiences Vicki shares—both from her childhood and her adult years. There is much to learn from her grandparents, parents, siblings, and extended family.
As you read her story, you may find yourself transported to your own past experiences, recognizing similarities and reflecting on them. At least, that was my experience, and I believe many readers will have a similar response if they allow themselves to. Some of Vicki’s stories took me back 20, 30, even 40 years, reminding me of my own life and the things I witnessed—and continue to witness—within my own family.
I don’t have the words to express my gratitude; Edward wrote a generous review but also provided his readers (and this writer) with examples of the power of storytelling for empowerment and connecting with others. Yes, sometimes through shared hardships, but the glorious bits are in the celebration of our capacity and ability to lean on one another despite adverse circumstances in our families, our relationships, our world.
Edward is a gifted writer…a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army…a poet…a father…a partner…and an infinitely insightful human. The fact that he took the time to read “Surviving Sue” and then layered on the goodness with his insights and observations? I’m honored and humbled.
Edward often writes about leadership and the importance of it. If you’re not following him, to learn and grow, you should be. His compelling book reviews and reflective thoughts about our world provide inspiration and education. And when he uses his valuable reading time and chooses my book? Sigh. So very good.
Thank you, Edward and thank you to those who’ve supported me in my “Surviving Sue” journey. You’re in my heart.
