Sharing Our Stories – “Surviving Sue” – New Review

I’ve yet to meet a memoirist who didn’t have a moment or two of panic about exposure.

Baring ourselves, our stories and hoping for understanding. Hoping that the notes of resilience and empowerment shine through.

I had those anxieties when I wrote “Surviving Sue“. They’d come in waves and torrents, but I carried on…ever hopeful that Brené Brown’s words would be prophetic:

“One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through, and it will be someone else’s survival guide.” —Brené Brown

Every time a reader offers feedback, I see the truth in Brown’s quote. I certainly felt that way this week when Edward Ortiz wrote the most beautiful, thoughtful review of my book. Here’s a sample:

I believe this book should be required reading for all new parents. It’s a book to read slowly, highlighting passages, taking notes, and reflecting on the life experiences Vicki shares—both from her childhood and her adult years. There is much to learn from her grandparents, parents, siblings, and extended family.

As you read her story, you may find yourself transported to your own past experiences, recognizing similarities and reflecting on them. At least, that was my experience, and I believe many readers will have a similar response if they allow themselves to. Some of Vicki’s stories took me back 20, 30, even 40 years, reminding me of my own life and the things I witnessed—and continue to witness—within my own family.

I don’t have the words to express my gratitude; Edward wrote a generous review but also provided his readers (and this writer) with examples of the power of storytelling for empowerment and connecting with others. Yes, sometimes through shared hardships, but the glorious bits are in the celebration of our capacity and ability to lean on one another despite adverse circumstances in our families, our relationships, our world.

Edward is a gifted writer…a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army…a poet…a father…a partner…and an infinitely insightful human. The fact that he took the time to read “Surviving Sue” and then layered on the goodness with his insights and observations? I’m honored and humbled.

Edward often writes about leadership and the importance of it. If you’re not following him, to learn and grow, you should be. His compelling book reviews and reflective thoughts about our world provide inspiration and education. And when he uses his valuable reading time and chooses my book? Sigh. So very good.

Thank you, Edward and thank you to those who’ve supported me in my “Surviving Sue” journey. You’re in my heart.

I think we should all remember Brene Brown’s quote as well if we are hesitant to tell our stories.
We all have anxieties before we send it out in to the world.
Edwards review and your book I am sure will inspire others.
    Much love to you.

  14. Vicki, I’m at a loss for words right now, but I just want to thank you for the kind and beautiful things you said about me. Let me turn this back to you, my friend. It was a real honor to read your book. You deserve all the accolades because you did something amazing and truly inspiring when you decided to write it. Intergenerational trauma is something close to my heart, and it’s often silent, moving from one generation to the next, uninterrupted. I know you broke your cycle, and I’m working on breaking mine. Brené Brown is absolutely right, and your book will help me on my journey. I’m sure it will help many others. You are a courageous woman, and I want to thank you for sharing your heart with the world.

  18. There are times when I think I’m past the panic stage. It’s like I think I’ve outgrown it or something. And then there are other times when it comes rushing back like it’s trying to teach me a lesson. “Oh, you think you’re above it all. Well, let’s see about that.” Ha, ha. Vicki, I love that you’re still getting feedback from readers letting you know how much your book means to them. That’s got to be a gratifying feeling. Congrats on the wonderful review. Well deserved!!!

    1. Thanks so much, Brian. Yes! I think it’s why the Brene quote came to mind when I read Edward’s review…my hoped-for outcome was that my story, about Sue, would be helpful and he totally captured the nuances about intergenerational healing. So grateful. And to you…thanks for all of the good wishes and support. Oof – yes! So many lessons, so little time, right? 🥰😜🥰

  25. I’m embarrassed to tell you Vicki that your book “Surviving Sue” has been on my bookshelf for the last 13 and a half months. I’ve read many reviews, all congratulatory and encouraging, yet I still continue to put off reading it. Of course, I know why I await the strength to endure the potential reminders of my own story – different maybe but still often traumatic.
Having just read Edward’s superb review I know it’s time! I need to do this! 🙂
I have also subscribed to Edward’s blog being immediately hooked by the two posts I read.
Thank you Vicki ( and Edward ) ♥️
