Signs of Heart

The Faces of Deer

by Mary Oliver

When for too long I don’t go deep enough
into the woods to see them, they begin to
enter my dreams.

Yes, there they are, in the
pinewoods of my inner life. I want to live a life
full of modesty and praise. Each hoof of each
animal makes the sign of a heart as it touches
then lifts away from the ground.

Unless you
believe that heaven is very near, how will you
find it? Their eyes are pools in which one
would be content, on any summer afternoon,
to swim away through the door of the world
.

Then, love and its blessing. Then: heaven.

…”in the pinewoods of my inner life...” was the phrase that returned to me, conjured when I spotted a sweet two-some this week:

Relaxing and reclining near our cherry tree. One with her eyes on me, wondering if I was about to disturb their respite and the other with eyes fixed on the field, on the lookout for coyotes, perhaps? They’ve been out during daylight hours recently, which is concerning.

Seeking camouflage within and amidst our various pinewoods.

They weren’t alone in their subterfuge. My dear friend Wynne’s doggo, Cooper, was caught in a peek-a-boo pose this week and the similarity to the deer made me smile:

Signs of heart? Absolutely, yes.

  3. LOL that picture of Cooper was one of my favourites from Wynne’s roundup this week. I see the parallels with your photo.

Oh the sweet deer. On Monday afternoon, as we drove home from my mother-in-law’s birthday celebration, something caught my eye. It was a field full of deer. The animals are starting to stir. Spring is in the air.

    1. Wasn’t that the most en-deering (wink!) pic of Cooper? Thanks for seeing the resemblance, Michelle. And a field full of deer? Wowza. I might be overplaying my hand these days but springtime, renewal and deer are bolstering my sense of hope. I’ll take all I can get! 🤪❤️🤪

      1. En-deering. 😂💚 Winter doesn’t want to let go of us here in southern Ontario. We had snow again this week. But today is going to be a good day to get outside and walk. I’ll take it.

    1. Oh my goodness, Ab! What an amazing thought. I sure hope so…we’re so pleased they return every year (even though they eat things we wish they wouldn’t). It was their land first! Big hugs to you this morning! 🥰

  6. I’m a little surprised they bed down in the middle of the field. They must feel safe there Vicki. And yes, Cooper, has a little show business in him. He knows he’s a star! Ha ha! 😎😎

    1. That was my reaction, too….they looked so comfy and I hoped it wasn’t because of exhaustion…being chased by coyotes. Even if it was, so happy that our yard felt like a haven. Even if only for a bit.
And yes! Cooper…he needs an agent, doesn’t he???? 😜🥰😜

      1. I’m not all familiar with coyotes but I would expect that if they were worried about them, they’d be more concerned with hiding. That seems like pure comfort to me! 😊😊😊

  9. How wonderful having those beautiful animals in your back yard Vicki 🥰 My reaction to that very handsome chap, Cooper, is that if he should be missing from home he may be at ours! Except that he probably won’t be as we’re in the UK!! 😀

  16. Our deer never lie down in the yard. I assume they’re too freaked out that Tara will chase them away from her garden again and need to be ready to bolt at a moment’s notice.

  17. Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets, Vicki. I love the way her poems are plain spoken and yet so deeply moving as she invites us to see the world through her eyes. As beautiful choice for the sweet twosome.

And Cooper. What a face. Had to chuckle.

  18. I love the poem, Vicki, and Mary Oliver is my favorite. I enjoyed your other posts too. We see deer roaming up and down our street from the open space. The trouble is that they’re not street smart and drivers don’t always watch for them. I don’t mind them though. Like you, I love the flowers, but I’d rather plant in the backyard and just let the deer ‘be’ in the front. Makes me wonder how anyone could hunt these beautiful, gentle creatures. Lovely post! 💞
