“Meadowlark Songs” by Joy Neal Kidney

I can’t think of a more heartwarming book to recommend than Joy Neal Kidney’s latest masterpiece, “Meadowlark Songs” (Available from Amazon.com in paperback, hardback, and ebook.)

If you’re like me – grateful to find books that instill and bolster your faith – “Meadowlark Songs” is for you. I promise.

Reading about Joy’s family and their roots in central Iowa is restorative. If you’re not familiar, you need to catch up! Check out Joy’s previous books:

Joy brings the poignancy of love and loss forward and every time I read about her family, I feel as though I’ve been welcomed into the fold; invited into the Guthrie County, Iowa homes of Joy’s ancestors. On each page I learn about their lives, stories of triumph and pain. Deeply American stories about a family across decades.

In Joy’s latest book, she turns her attention to her magnificent ‘motherline’; generations who endured every conceivable challenge – from covered wagons traversing the plains as pioneers to building homesteads and families even when the horrors of war and poverty shook their foundations. Through it all, Joy provides deeply resonant examples of resilience – told in stories and precious photographs.

My copy of “Meadowlark Songs” is dog-eared and marked up with endless annotations but there are two aspects that tugged at my heart.

First: In Chapter 1 Joy includes a quote from Naomi Ruth Lowinsky who wrote, “Stories from the Motherline“:

“Once you reach back to the grandmother level, and the great-grandmother level, you’re getting into the soul of your family.”

I’d say Joy’s done just that, revealing the soulful source of her family’s strength – the power of her own magnificent motherline.

Second: Dear Joy – thank you for including the references to precious china and heirlooms…and antimacassars. Reminders of a time gone by – making me smile as I think about my own motherline.

Happy Reading, everyone – and thank you so much, Joy.

  1. That is so true about our grandmothers and great-grandmothers. There is much we can learn from how they lived. People dismiss their way of life as old-fashioned and irrelevant. Yet they had so many things right!

    Thanks for sharing, Vicki! 🤗

    2. Michelle, thanks so much for your comment. I took these precious women for granted until I began pondering their lives, watching for how they handled terrible losses, how longevity blessed the next generations.

    2. I love your comment, Rose. The meadowlark has been a recurring bird in these family stories after one brother, who never came home from WWII, mentioned that it was his favorite bird. They were taking photos on his last furlough home.

When I think of Joy’s family story, the phrase that comes to mind is “salt of the earth.” I’ve lived in the East, Midwest, and West during my lifetime. I remember my parents always used that phrase to describe many of their Midwestern friends who they though of as honest, hard-working, and humble. The meadowlark was the state bird (I imagine it still is) when we lived in North Dakota.

          1. That’s wonderful, Joy! Happy anniversary! I had an unknown allergic reaction for several months in the winter. Medical providers didn’t know what to do with me. Finally one provider gave me steroids and it was cleared up in one week. I had the same condition five years ago but it was worse. I had steroid injections and then used steroid cream for more than a month. By the time I was done, I lost most of the hair.

  13. thank you so much for this recommendation, Vicki. I’ve heard her name mentioned so many times and have never read her, and now I understand why I keep hearing her name mentioned. I look forward to reading her stories and her family in Iowa, and learning about her motherline, and all that goes with it. it sounds like she has a beautiful way with words and storytelling.

I do believe it’s true, that is where we begin to really learn things about our families, and now I don’t have those people here to ask in my own family, I wish I had known to ask, but can piece together what I do know and it will help to make more sense of things in my own story.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. You described the work — piecing bits together — yes! I think that’s what I love about Joy’s books. She does that so well – playing the part of daughter, granddaughter, historian and detective. You will be amazed by the details she tracks down and the photos. Oh my.
So happy to introduce you to Joy! 🥰

    2. Beth, what powerful thought. Once you start writing down a story you do remember, others will come. You can ask other family members whether they have stories from the past. It’s amazing how themes begin to emerge that do help make sense of you own story.
