Change Your Mind

Where did the time go?

The band, Sister Hazel released “Change Your Mind” twenty-five years ago this month?!?

When I looked it up, I was in disbelief. So, I checked and checked again, feeling windburn from the emotional rush.

I bet you – or someone you hold dear – got a lift, a motivational boost thanks to “Change Your Mind”.

I know why. It’s the chorus…I love it and I’m not alone:

If you wanna be somebody else
If you’re tired of fighting battles with yourself
If you wanna be somebody else
Change your mind
Change your mind

It’s an anthem. One that makes me pause and reflect – thinking about people whose hearts were touched by the song. Then and now.

When “Change Your Mind” unexpectedly joined me in the car yesterday, I found myself listening while holding my breath. Surprised by the flood of memories as I drove with damp eyes.

Take a listen:

Lead singer and “Change Your Mind” songwriter Ken Block shared these thoughts with “Songfacts“. I love the creative backstory. Personal and powerful.

I was dealing with overwhelming personal struggles, he says, “My thoughts are that it’s not your life; it’s all about perspective and how you choose to look at your life. It’s not always easy,” he explains, “but it is just as simple sometimes as changing your mind. And it is so powerful how we attract things into our life. Two people can walk into the same room and see the same things, and they are so vastly different. Even in our own lives, we take ourselves everywhere we go, so when we come in with a bad attitude or a bad day, or views of life or whatever, we take all of that with us. And if we can manipulate that a little bit…”

And by keeping the message simple, he hit a resounding chord with his listeners. “With this song, we got e-mails from quite literally tens of thousands of people. I really didn’t know it was going to resonate like that. And it was incredibly gratifying to me, seeing where all those ripples went, and still go, with that particular song to this day. It’s turned into a pretty powerful and simple mantra for a lot of people. And that’s pretty gratifying.”

Your turn now.

What song gives you an instant lift – or propels you across time and space?

-Vicki 💝

Lagniappe – a Little More. Trivia Time: Did you know the band’s named after a selfless nun – Sister Hazel – who ran a homeless shelter in Gainesville, Florida? Ken Block was inspired by her service and hoped Sister Hazel – as a band – might embody the same spirit of giving through music. 💕

  1. Great topic. Santana’s Smooth is one of those songs that puts me into a different era and headspace. When it came out and was on the radio all the time I was younger, more upbeat, and thinking life would be smooth in the future. “Gimme your heart, make it real, or else forget about it…” 🎶

  2. love this and I so get it! music has always done this for me, some songs more than others. for me, one song that has done this is ‘what a feeling’ from Flashdance, a movie I loved from way back. I saw it and loved it when I became single as a young mother and heard it on my way home from getting my first job. to me it meant following your passions and finding a way no matter how hard. and it still does to this day.

  3. Way to make me feel old Vicki. It can’t be 25 years but in the interest of personal sanity, I won’t challenge your research. Most anything that more people than not would consider “bubblegum” or less than serious, happy songs you can sing along with will brighten my mood. But when I really need a lift I turn to a different drummer, or in this case pianist and put on Drive Time by David Benoit. It’s the song I want playing when I take the little car out, drop the top, find the most windy, twisty, turner road, and just go. Bonus points if it’s in the fall and leaves are changing and coming down around me.

    1. David Benoit and Drive Time! Thanks for that – I just summoned it up to listen to be sure it was the tune I recalled. Oh yah…exactly the sort of mood music for you and your little red roadster (why can’t I remember her name?) 🥰😎🥰

  4. What a great story of why the band named themselves Sister Hazel. I agree with Ally about “Smooth.” I like how Carlos Santana’s daughter didn’t believe he was “anybody” so he collaborated with Rob Thomas and made “Smooth” to prove that he was still somebody! He looks so joyous in the video. Also, on the news of Brian Wilson, I love “Good Vibrations.”

    1. Elizabeth…I love the “Smooth” backstory – about Santana’s daughter and Rob Thomas. Too funny! Her dad hadn’t made it until he recorded with him. Hilarious. Thanks for that anecdote!
And yes…the Brian Wilson news. So much iconic music like “Good Vibrations”. And “God Only Knows”…I have no words for what that song does to me. Hugs to you! 💕

  5. This sure shows the difference in generations, since I never heard of either the song or the band! 😂 But any Beach Boys song can take me back to my “formative years” any time at all! RIP, Brian Wilson.

I wrote this post yesterday afternoon — not long before the news about Brian Wilson’s passing. What a talent. So many songs that are evocative from the Beach Boys. RIP, indeed. 💕💕💕

  10. Too many to name, music lover that I am, but “Ten Years Gone” by Led Zeppelin tops the list.

  11. I am quite embarrassed that I don’t know this song! I know I’m older, but not that much older, haha. Anyway, reading the backstory on how you can “change your mind”, reminded me of an interview with Jeanette Walls who wrote The Glass Castle. I wrote down the quote: “You can tell about the guy who cut you off, or you can tell about the sweet child who gave you a hug. We make these decisions all the time – which to share.” It’s about the power of choice nd perspective. Thanks so much for stirring my memory banks and the reminder of how we can move through the world. Thanks, Vicki! 😊🥰

  12. 25 years? Wow, time is going way too fast.

For me, it’s a Puerto Rican song based on a poem by Juan Antonio Corretjer. The song is called “Boricua on the Moon” (Boricua meaning Puerto Rican). It starts like this:

“From the waves of the sea
that roll in kissing the shore,
    a woman from Aguadilla
came to sing in New York.
But she arrived only to cry
a river of tears and died.
I was born from that river
like a beast born from rain.”

    It then ends,
“I would be Boricua even if
I were born on the moon!”

My emotions are indescribable when I listen to that song, and tears always flow. It definitely takes me places and brings back a lot of memories.

Great post, Vicki, and thank you for that question.

  13. That’s a good song, thanks for sharing it with us, Vicki! Here’s one that’s more recent and often boosts me up. “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco –
“Had to have high high hopes for a living
Shooting for the stars when I couldn’t make a killing
Didn’t have a dime but I always had a vision
    Always had high high hopes
Had to have high high hopes for a living
Didn’t know how but I always had a feeling
I was gonna be that one in a million
Always had high high hopes” …

  14. I had never heard that song before, but it’s catchy. And such a powerful message.

For a song that propels me across time and space, it’s definitely “Bohemian Rhapsody”. When I hear it, I’m 11 and rocking out on the school bus. Or sometimes I’m in my 30’s recreating that “Wayne’s World” scene with my friends in the car on the way home from Toronto after a baseball game. It’s unbelievable to me that it has been 50 years this year since that song was released.

  18. What a great song and mantra, Vicki! I can’t believe it’s been 25 years! Time is mystifying, isn’t it? I loved reading the back story and how the title of the band came to be. I can only imagine the letters and ripple effect. And the message is timeless. Music has always had this effect on me since I sang in my youth. But my brain is fuzzy, so I can’t think of a song right now. But thanks for sharing this one, and have a good weekend. 💞🤗🎶

Our mother came down the stairs to join us (shock) as she must have heard the music. When “You’ll Never Walk Alone” played, she cried. That was the first time my sister and I had ever seen our mother cry. True story, one I’ll never forget.
