When You Crack Yourself Up: Emily Dickinson Style

Greetings, friends –

We made it to Wednesday (it IS Wednesday, right?).  I love my full and busy life and I’m grateful to the sweet folks who add humor and insight, daily.  Still, I can be my own sideshow attraction…and I know it.

I crave time to noodle, ponder and think…about nothing and everything…but I often end up sabotaging my own ‘quiet time’ as my eyes lock onto, like a tractor beam, the unfinished this or that around the house (especially stacks of inspiration on my desk).

Just when I needed it, this gem from Emily Dickinson appeared…peering out from the aforementioned messy desk:

Today, I’m going to attempt to focus.  One task at a time without my customary swirl.  Wish me luck and if you see me wandering with a lantern, send me home. 😉

Vicki ❤

    1. Wow – Art – thank you so much! Does it sound too trite to say “all the same to you”? Truly – sending those good vibrations your way…. here they come! 😉

      1. No, it doesn’t sound trite at all! Thank you! 🙏🧡🙂

  2. Maybe Emily Dickinson will meet Diogenes! Tractor beams? Might you be a Star Trek fan?

    1. Dr. Stein! You caught my ‘Easter egg’! Yes, yes, yes. Hubby and I are SO enjoying the latest “Picard” on Paramount…we love all incarnations of Star Trek but getting the gang back together from the “Next Generation” era is so much fun. 😉 Thanks for the smiles!

Just five minutes, but especially interesting if you are a fan who has never seen or heard it.

            1. Thank you so much! I just watched the video…and I loved it…I had no idea…”Shin” …a letter in the Hebrew alphabet became the Vulcan creating. I can’t wait to share this with a couple of other Trekkie friends…and fans of the beloved Leonard Nimoy…my hubby and best friend Linda will love this clip. Many thanks for sharing, Dr. Stein. 💕

  3. Vicki if I see you out wandering with a lantern I will be astounded with mouth hanging open that you managed to make it all the way to Washington in such a short time and on foot, but yes- I will gladly point you in the right direction, hand you a bottle of water and a snack and send you on your way home 😉

I love that quote btw, and can relate. Good luck with that focus thing…

    1. Deb, Deb, Deb…your comment just made me laugh out loud…in a big way. I’m still sitting around in my robe and fuzzy slippers…and if you found me, miraculously, wandering in your neck of the woods, I would be ever-so grateful for directions, water, snacks – maybe a warm blanket. You’re the best! Thanks for the smiles! 🥰🤣🥰

      1. Sounds like a plan, then we can send her walking off into the sunset (oops, I guess that would be sunrise wouldn’t it) with her lantern in hand which of course she then wouldn’t need! I seem to be overthinking today don’t I 😉

  5. At one time, I was led to believe being able to multi-task was a necessary skill set for success at work. Later, I was led to believe humans can really only do well at a singular task if we are just focused upon it. It sounds to me like the people “leading me” need the lanterns! Good luck, Vicki!

    1. Thanks for the encouragement along with a smile, Bruce! That’s almost better than a literal ‘lantern’, I say! 😎😉😎

    1. Sure thing…but like Deb, will you point me in the right direction (LOL – whatever THAT is) if you find me wandering? I could use a navigator…🤣

  7. Brilliant and funny post. Just out of a 3 hour meeting. My head is spinning … maybe I need your lantern to help with focus and direction … but maybe not across the water

    1. LOL — well, if you venture out to ‘cross the pond’ let me know…I’m in the Midwest…we might need some East Coast blogging buddies to keep a look out for you. Wear your galoshes and look for a sturdy boat! Seriously, though — sorry to hear about a 3-hour meeting. That’s a lot. Hope you take a few moments to breathe and reset. xo! 💕

  8. I used to approach my writing time like you. Dishes had to be done, dust bunnies under the beds erased, laundry done. Now that the kids are out of the house there isn’t nearly as much housework to do! I have a much harder time making up excuses. I think I need a lantern too!

    1. LOL — thanks for the giggle. Yes — dust bunnies, grout that needs to be cleaned…funny how I can find endless “other” things to do. Good to know you’ll keep me company, Elizabeth, as we wander. I’ll get a two-pack of lanterns for us. xo! 🥰

  9. “Wandering with a lantern” – I hope I find you in our pasture dancing in the Texas wildflowers, for I shall join you! For life is short, and we will put off “focus” for another day!

    1. Oh, Mary! That sounds delightful…whether you find me amidst the wildflowers or we meet in the middle! And…Cheers to “focusing” being overrated. You’re the best! ❤️

  11. “It IS Wednesday, right?” I just came out of an 11-hour day and I’m feeling that! Hope you found some focus or, if you you wasted the day wondering with your lantern, I hope you at least found some interesting trinkets along the way. 😘

    1. Oh…it WAS an interesting day. Maybe blogging fodder for the future…the highs, the lows, the unexpected delights and disappointments. Maybe I need a brighter bulb…in my lantern? And…here’s hoping you have a restful night…11 hour day, you say? I will stop complaining…right now! 😘😉😘

  15. I’m reading this on Thursday because the swirl of Wednesday took me away from blogland. Now I’m attempting to focus backward to what I missed whilst moving forward. Not sure I’m up to this challenge.

  16. Paragraph #2 is so relatable. If I enjoy and am inspired by my work projects, and I need fun and inspiration in my life, then why not just work all time?
Well, I tried it and it doesn’t quite work at least for me 🤦🏼‍♂️🙃
