Cover Art: The Reveal

This is surreal, still.  I did that thing…that ‘write a book’ thing and it’s actually becoming a reality.

Last week I received the go-ahead from my publisher to share the cover art for the book (see below) about my mother’s life, “Surviving Sue”.  Over the past several months, I’ve dropped a mention here and there about the editing process, the tediousness and trepidation of writing about family and now I’m nearly there.

“Surviving Sue” will be available for pre-sale from the publisher’s website in June and I’ll post more details about that when the time comes.  For now, I’m doing my due diligence…sharing the cover with the hope that some of you will stick with me over the next few weeks as I blog about the book and a few behind-the-scenes ‘untold stories’.

I love that so many of my friends have interests in writing about family and I agree it’s a delicate topic.  However, I’ve grown to embrace the importance of storytelling as a means to encourage others.  Families are messy, families are complex and mine certainly was.  But underneath the madness sat love and positive regard.  Angels were everywhere when I needed help and “Surviving Sue” is as much a true tale of resiliency as it is a love letter.

Thank you, blogging buddies, for your interest and support.

Vicki 😊

  3. Oh, this is very cool! First, what an awesome cover. Love the cover shot. I could be wrong, but it seems to elude to the constant “observing” that you’ve mentioned in other posts. Always watching, sure smiling, but still on guard, checking to see what Sue you have today. Second, love the Brene Brown quote to open your post — so very true. Love the focus on resiliency. Can definitely relate to that. Can’t wait to read. I’m reading Wynne’s book now, have Cheryl’s book to read too and I know I’m forgetting a couple of others. So many great writers in this community. In any event, so happy for you. Great news. Congratulations.

    1. Ah…thank you so much for your enthusiasm, Brian! I appreciate it! And keen observations on your part. The cover photo is a pic of my mom…one of the few we have of her, taken by her father during happy times. I knew as soon as I started writing about her life that this pic would be the cover. Thankfully my publisher and the designer agreed! 😊

        1. Oh no…you weren’t wrong at all…my mother was the original ‘observer’ taking in all sorts of things around her, spoken and not. 😉

  5. Love, love, love the BIG reveal!! Storytelling as a means to encourage others – you have done that in spades both in the storytelling and the encouraging. What a story of resilience as well as intergenerational healing. Thank you for your courage and for inspiring us all!! ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Thank you, dear one…for all of your support, love and encouragement….more stories to come about all that you did to get me to the finish line, my friend. Love you bunches! 🥰🥰🥰

  6. I’m so thrilled for you. Congratulations! I love your cover. I can’t wait to have your book in my hands!!! I grew up with a bipolar mom and alcoholic father. Yet there was a lot of love in my family despite the messiness as you put it. My parents had difficult childhoods, to put it mildly. I have a feeling your book will be comforting to me.

    1. Thank you so much, Elizabeth — I sure hope so…about the comfort. Given some of shared dynamics in our families, I bet some of the stories I tell will resonate with recognition and hopefully make you smile. Thank you for your enthusiasm and support. I appreciate it more than you could ever know! xo! 🥰

          1. Definitely in a good way. I can’t wait to read your book. A decorate sign made me laugh, “Remember, as far as everyone knows, we are a nice normal family.” It’s a perfect description of my childhood and I had to buy it!

  7. That is sooo cool Vicki! One of my retirement to-dos is to write a book. I told my daugther about it on the weekend—that it will probably be “mom’s nuggets of wisdom” so I can leave something behind for my girls after I’m gone. She loved the idea.

I will be watching your journey with interest!

    1. I love that, Michelle. Ninety percent of the ‘why’ behind my book was related to a request from our daughter…as she asked to better understand the things she saw, experienced as a little one. I’ll cheer you on — I think you are well on your way with your ‘nuggets of wisdom’ idea! 🥰

      1. Part of what I shared from the newest “Leora book” dealt with mental health issues, and how they were handled 100 years ago. The stories have helped distant cousins understand their unhappy grandmother (a sister of my grandfather). Some were afraid of her.

        1. Thank you for that, Joy! I need to catch up about that…I appreciate you mentioning it. The aspect of helping extended family understand…oh yes…that’s a connecting thread for sure. xo! 🥰

  12. Wow, the cover looks great! I can’t wait to read, Vikci!! I’m so excited for you!! YAY!!! 🥰

Also, E.A.’s comment makes me think my mom might also take comfort in your story. Her father died when she was very young and her mother didn’t know how to express affection (never once told her kids “I love you”) and turned to alcohol after losing her husband. I think recognizing that her family’s messiness is perhaps more universal than she previously realized may help her make peace with her past. Ahh, I’m even more excited now.

    1. Oh, Erin — it means a lot to know that you like the cover…AND that you see connections to the story – already – in ways that might resonate with your mom. I love that. I’m hoping the story of my mom’s life will help others…just as you said…making peace with the past. xo to you! 🥰

  13. Wow! This is fantastic. My brother and I have talked about putting something together about my mother who passed away of breast cancer. It is still a pipe dream. Eventually, I’d like to put my blog entries together for an autobiographical book for my kids.
