Publishing = Panic at the Disco?

No, no. Not the band of the same name, “Panic at the Disco”. I’m referring to a silly moment in my latest podcast with Wynne. What a treat it is – every time I visit with her. Even when the topic’s fairly serious, we find ways to have fun.  😎

In this week’s Heart of the Matter podcast, Wynne and I talk about the publishing process as we swap stories.  We’re no experts, but we’re happy to share our experiences. One common denominator – one of the many connecting threads between us? Wynne and I were purpose-driven as we wrote about our parents (Wynne writing about her father in “Finding My Father’s Faith” and me writing about my mother in “Surviving Sue”). Feeling an innate sense of purpose served as oomph and energy as we wrote, but it also helped both of us navigate publishing decisions later on.

One of my motivational nudges?  A quote that I carried in my heart throughout the process of bringing my mom’s story to life. So much so that it appears on page 1 of “Surviving Sue”:

One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through and it will be someone else’s survival guide.

-Brene Brown

We hope this episode is a helpful ‘behind the scenes’ treat. Or that it’s entertaining. Or both. Every time Wynne and I chat there’s a giggle or two…no matter what the topic. 😉 This time? Somehow, we weave disco dancing into the mix, just as I mentioned above.

  1. the shared bits and pieces of your story definitely help guide me (even when some of the raw “nakedness” makes me anxious). ❤

  2. Love the Brene Brown quote. What a powerful nudge – especially in the quiet moments when you might want to have quit or put the manuscript on a shelve. Wow. 😎😎😎😎

    1. Yes, yes, yes — it felt a little ‘otherworldly’ and heaven-sent when I read it the first time. As if she’d written the words just for me. Thanks, Brian! 🥰

      1. I wonder if that has something with those who tinker with an idea for a book and those who do. The role of mission. I would put together a study if I could find a $$$$ foundation to cover my costs. Ha ha. 😎😎😎

        1. What a terrific research question that would be! I’m learning that being intentional and focused can help in so many ways but I’m also still wondering how the Universe works. 😂 Let’s get your project funded so we can figure it all out!

  7. Writing the book is the easy part, right? It’s the promo that is the REAL part of the job! So many books languish on shelfs gathering dust because the authors don’t have the wherewithal, way, or gumption to get out and do what it takes to sell it. For me, selling my book smacks a little of self-promotion, and that’s a tough one for me! Thanks so much for an enlightening and entertaining podcast. You’re right—the process is unique to each and every one—both the writing and promotion. One of the things I learned is that self-publishing is extremely challenging and requires many, many decisions along the way! What a process! 🤪 Kudos to all who write and promote!

    1. Gosh…you summarized a whole podcast’s worth of goodness in just a few words, Julia — kudos INDEED to all who write and promote. Yes, yes! And I agree — it feels like we’re shining our own apples when we do promo work…a bit of a challenge because some of us are pretty connected to our faults and failings 🙄 — but I figure that’s where our humor comes from, right? Much love to you for listening and for just BEING you. xo! 🥰

      1. Shining our own apples? I love it! May I steal that one? I guess we all have our personal demons to wrestle when it comes to promotion. I’m still in the ring, but I’m cheering you on out there in the world of sales! Offer a generous helping of love with each sale and you’re be off to the best-seller races!

        1. From your lips – best seller thoughts ! 🥰 And — big LOL — yes of course! Steal away. I probably pilfered that line from someone else. 😜
