Little One…and Mama

I spied…mama and baby deer this morning and I was shocked by how much “baby” has grown (first pic). The second photo (sorry for the grainy-ness through the screen) was taken just a couple of weeks ago when I wrote about my favorite twosome. Baby’s sweet markings and slight physique were obvious then…less so today.

More than the absence of her baby spots, the little one now looks more like a petite peer-deer and less like a youngster. She looks stronger – almost knocking mama down as she commanded access to her breakfast.

Although baby’s grown, mama’s a stalwart, giving me the same expression in both pics, isn’t she? A ‘hello there – you, again?’ look that I adore.

That’s my Monday morning love and a smile from me to you. Well, mostly from me, but a bit from mama, too.

Vicki 😉

  2. Love seeing deer with fawns. We get them around here and there’s a sweetness that transcends my awareness that these critters are eating all my flowers in the garden.

    1. You’re right…although lovely, they ate our peonies down to nubs…hoping there’s enough left for them to return (the peonies, that is – LOL) next year. Maybe ‘gardener Ally’ knows? Our gardening expertise is limited to watering…eh, and a little weeding. That’s it. 😉

      1. I don’t know a thing about peonies. They don’t do well around here and I’ve never tried to grow any. You can tell me what happens when you figure it out!

  5. Yup, a great way to start the week. They definitely love your back yard. Fawns generally stick around near their mothers for a year or so you should see them together for a while. I second Deb’s comment, The Atkinson Nature Preserve.

    1. LOL…you and Deb…give we Atkinson’s way too much credit. Left on our own, we’d be feeding all the wildlife, making them dependent, create a crisis of some sort. But I’m glad you enjoy peeking at them, Brian. A year or so, really? Oh — that’s good! I keep thinking the little one’s about to be a teenager and will flee. 😉

      1. I’ve always heard that the doe nurses her fawns for 2-3 months and then the fawns will stay around for at least a year or two (depending on if they’re female or male.) Looks like the Preserve will have some repeat visitors!

        1. That’s what our neighbors have said — thirty + years of deer families. 😉

  6. I never tire of seeing them, sweet creatures that they are. I know of someone who sets out a special picnic plate for the ants and instructs them accordingly. Yours, ours! Maybe the deer would appreciate having a little flower garden of their own, with a sign that says, “Yours.”

    1. I love that, Jules! Maybe by the flower bed with peonies and their apple tree.
      “Yours ❤️”. Xo! 🥰

  9. Thank you for sharing such beautiful photos to start my week. We ran into deer the other morning and they were so majestic. I wish I hadn’t yelped when I saw them because they quickly moved away.

    1. I just giggled a little…imagining you yelping. Yes…they’re so quiet you can be surprised — and the grown ones aren’t small, either! Thanks for your sweet comment, as always – and for reading. xo!

    1. I know…it’s so silly, really…but when I can discern a little growth and musculature on the baby it makes me happy! Take that you d*mn coyote predators…baby’s getting big AND strong! 😜

      1. Yes, I’m so with you about those predators. No wonder little fawns grow so quickly. This weekend we were watching a darling little fawn with two mature deer down on the beach. They were so careful about listening and choosing the right way off the beach. A dog barked on one route and they were like, “no way!”
