If you’d ever asked me if I might write a blog post based on a purported quote from Keanu Reeves, I would’ve laughed at you. I mean…no disrespect…but it wasn’t until I rummaged around in my quote pile (mess, hoard, chaos, clutter, jumble – you pick the word you like – any/all apply) and found a gem, gifted to me from a former student, that the idea surfaced.
Tucked into a thank you card was this image of Keanu (snipped in above – apologies to whomever has the licensing rights to this image – sorry!). My student offered it to me, along with a handwritten note as a way of summarizing a breakthrough she had, distancing herself from a dysfunctional relationship.
Despite her turmoil, she was a delightful, exuberant girl…and I learned in our first encounter that she had a singular goal in life. Yep. Her biggest dream was to meet Keanu. Devoted fan…those are two words that described her admiration of the actor who, in her mind, was more humanitarian and philosopher than thespian. Maybe so. Who am I to judge?
The quote? The one she attributed to Keanu Reeves? Here you go:
Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.
In her note, she praised me for helping to boost her confidence, but she also wanted me to know that Keanu’s version of the same insight was a lot more enjoyable…wisdom plus ‘that face’ she said:
I think you taught me this same lesson, Vicki, but you’re no Keanu!
She signed the card with her trademark hearts ❤❤❤ and xxxxx’s and ooooo’s. (Yes, we bonded over all of that, too, our mutual love and hugs, kisses and emojis galore.)
I thought about her this week and how funny and resilient she was. It’s been ten years since we’ve connected, and I hope she’s doing well. My memory lane moment triggered a story – one of my own recovery tales – that I share in my Heart of the Matter post today. Hop over. Wisdom from Robert Frost is waiting (sorry, no Keanu).
Love and hugs! XX and OO!
Vicki 🥰
