You’re No Keanu!

If you’d ever asked me if I might write a blog post based on a purported quote from Keanu Reeves, I would’ve laughed at you.  I mean…no disrespect…but it wasn’t until I rummaged around in my quote pile (mess, hoard, chaos, clutter, jumble – you pick the word you like – any/all apply) and found a gem, gifted to me from a former student, that the idea surfaced.

Tucked into a thank you card was this image of Keanu (snipped in above – apologies to whomever has the licensing rights to this image – sorry!).  My student offered it to me, along with a handwritten note as a way of summarizing a breakthrough she had, distancing herself from a dysfunctional relationship.

Despite her turmoil, she was a delightful, exuberant girl…and I learned in our first encounter that she had a singular goal in life.  Yep.  Her biggest dream was to meet Keanu.  Devoted fan…those are two words that described her admiration of the actor who, in her mind, was more humanitarian and philosopher than thespian. Maybe so.  Who am I to judge?

The quote? The one she attributed to Keanu Reeves?  Here you go:

Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.

In her note, she praised me for helping to boost her confidence, but she also wanted me to know that Keanu’s version of the same insight was a lot more enjoyable…wisdom plus ‘that face’ she said:

I think you taught me this same lesson, Vicki, but you’re no Keanu!

She signed the card with her trademark hearts ❤❤❤ and xxxxx’s and ooooo’s.  (Yes, we bonded over all of that, too, our mutual love and hugs, kisses and emojis galore.)

I thought about her this week and how funny and resilient she was.  It’s been ten years since we’ve connected, and I hope she’s doing well.  My memory lane moment triggered a story – one of my own recovery tales – that I share in my Heart of the Matter post today.  Hop over.  Wisdom from Robert Frost is waiting (sorry, no Keanu).

Love and hugs! XX and OO!

Vicki 🥰

  3. Now I love Point Break, John Wick, The Matrix. (Check out The Lake House with him and Sandra Bullock – a silly suspension of disbelief movie, but actually a favorite of mine.) And I love the down-to-Earth Everyman philosopher and good guy that Keanu seems to be, but I think your student missed the point. Keanu is no Vicki! 🤭😆😆😎😎😎

    1. Hilarious! Have you had your coffee this morning? I say YES! “Keanu is no Vicki”. Oh…your enthusiasm. It’s affecting your judgment. LOL! And thanks for the reminder about The Lake House. I think I fell asleep trying to watch it once…I liked the premise but maybe I need to give it a ‘take two’ and try again? 🥰😎🥰

  4. Keanu is gorgeous and so down to earth. Thanks for sharing his quote, which is also your quote and what a damn good quote it is! I agree 100 percent. We should never judge our worth based on the opinions of others. When you’re in the public eye, or marching to the beat of a different drum, you WILL get haters. There is not one person in this world who doesn’t have a “hater.”
The beauty is, you can build up a thick skin towards these haters and still be a beautiful, sensitive human being. We should all remind ourselves how amazing we are until it’s embedded in our brains, then dumb comments just slide off and don’t ruin our fantastic lives! xo

    1. Yay for ALL of that, Maryanne! And I love that you’ve been near so many celebrities and rock icons that you KNOW what you say is true. March to your own beat…let the naysayers drop off. Yes, yes, yes! Here’s to letting the dumb stuff slide off…just as you said. xo! 🥰

  8. You given me new inspiration for why not to clear out the piles (hoards, messes, jumbled, etc.) never knowing what gems lurk there and what memories they may unlock. And how could I not agree with Keanu is no Vicki? If it is wasn’t for you rummaging, we’d never be treated to that mental comparison!

  14. A fabulous story. Though I am not a fan of Keanu’s movies, I dare say he is a pretty fabulous person from what I’ve read/heard. So that quote, and your student’s admiration comes as no surprise. Plus, he is easy to look at. 😁

      2. Hahaha right? That alone makes him kind of “normal.” I hear he is extremely humble and philanthropic in a very quiet way. I don’t believe he’s bought into the stereotypical Hollywood ideals and he’s held on to his own beliefs. Proud to say he’s also Canadian. 😁

  15. P.S. — I wanted to share this cool song by Voltaire. He’s bitching about his future ex-girlfriend’s crush on Keanu:

“And no one cares you love Keanu
    Oh, what’s the difference anyway?
    Everybody knows that he’s gay
Okay, I really don’t know that
    But lets face it
He’s too hot to be straight!”

  19. I think I still have a crush on Keanu, especially after the movie Something’s Got to Give, where he falls in love with a writer Diane Keaton! Hot! Okay, I’m calm now. But I’m also so curious if your student ever got to meet him? You have to find out! I’ve missed your posts Vicky, I was gone too long and the jet lag is real! Really loved your students note! And no — I don’t know if she ever met Keanu, but I’m trying to track her down. She was a delight in every way. (And thank you for the movie recommendation! Diane Keaton and Keanu in the same film? How did I miss that one!?) 🥰
