Podcast Friday: Sharing a Secret

I’m going to share a secret.

I get nervous…really nervous when I’m talking about my book, “Surviving Sue”.  Even when I’m chatting with my dear friend Wynne Leon on our podcast.  I’m continuing to learn how to talk about the motivation to write my mom’s story… about living with her and persevering.  Yes, surviving.  The level of exposure for writers of personal narratives can be intense and I held very little back when I wrote about Sue.

Two things come to mind today when I think about that:

  1. As I wrote “Surviving Sue”, I often needed to ignore thoughts about the future audience of readers.  This was a challenge for my empathetic heart.  My hope is that inspiration is found within the pages, but I can’t guarantee outcomes or worry about the emotions my story might provoke.  I can only write.
  2. Talking about vulnerabilities – even with trusted friends and readers – brings shivers.  Not the incapacitating type (I’ve experienced those) but the sort that puts a quiver in my voice despite my attempts to disguise it.  A persistent worry about worthiness rides alongside and I can slide into second guessing, critiquing nearly every word as I talk about “Surviving Sue”

As book club discussions, workshops and courses line up on the horizon, I’m simultaneously excited and terrified.  Finding my voice – the voice of a writer talking about writing – is a new role and I’m finding my way there.

One of the things that’s helped immensely – an unexpected gift? Peeling back the curtain to share techniques and strategies that helped me find my way to reconciliation and forgiveness. I can’t promise my path will be useful to anyone else, but I can share. And in today’s podcast, that’s what you’ll get. Sharing six-word style:

My heart to yours; with love.

Thank you to all of you who’ve read and listened to my story.  Thank you to Wynne for being an ever-present source of delight, encouragement and empowerment.

Vicki 🥰

  1. Victoria, I’ve no doubt you will delight your listeners as much as you delight your readers. I look forward to hearing the sound of your voice as I’ve heard it through your written words. As we said in theatre, “Break a leg!”, and “Merde!” in dance. A double scoop of love!!❤️❤️

  2. I think all forms of writing that are public require a certain acceptance that you will be vulnerable. Your book makes you more so, but even writing a simple little blog post can make me feel nervous before I hit publish. A whole book out there, might do me in.

    1. Thanks for that, Ally. Super true, I think. Any amount of disclosure summons those rumblings. Terrific point. xo! 🥰

  3. I got some shivers in my core just reading your words today.

“The level of exposure for writers of personal narratives can be intense”.

Yes, I’m feeling this today even as I just began to peel back another layer of my own narrative.

Thanks for helping me know I’m okay.

    1. David…I ‘feel’ you! Shivers and not because of the weather. This is me cheering you on and reminding you — you’ll know best about what’s right in terms of the level of sharing. I just know it. 🥰

  4. I think your shivers or nervousness are due to caring so much. That will come through on all your upcoming adventures sharing “Surviving Sue.”

  5. You will be great as you have always been, Vicki. The readers will care for themselves and stop reading if it is too much. That is not your responsibility. For the rest, your guidance to your own clients has doubtless come in handy. I know this is something you will and have mastered.

  7. I love that you are finding your voice as a writing about writing. You’re right – it isn’t easy. But you make it look like it is because you’ve done the work. Love all that you do! Sending love to your big heart! ❤ ❤ ❤

  8. You already convey such a generosity of spirit in your writing that I can’t imagine this won’t be pivotal to your teaching/speaking situations. I admire your strength in being so open and sharing your vulnerability. There’s no doubt that you will win over anyone and everyone. Your 6 word story reminds me of a song by John Denver, “My heart to yours
    Your heart to mine
Love is a light that shines
    From heart to heart.” ❤️

    1. Morning, dear Belle! Thank you, thank you, for that incredibly kind and loving comment. It means so much to hear that my heart comes through to you. And a little John Denver, too?!? Love that. Big hugs! 🥰

  10. I don’t believe anyone coming to your book club discussions, workshops and upcoming courses will judge your speaking abilities. I believe they are arriving due to your content you are presenting and seeking help through it. Keep twirling through life!!!!

  11. I’m fascinated by the approach you took. In a way you had to forget about the end reader. You had to put them completely out of your thoughts, in order to get your story down on paper, and in the end to help your end reader! Fascinating stuff. Such a great lesson — from both a therapy perspective and communications 101. Love it!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉

  13. As a podcast guest, the hardest question for me to answer is “So, Vickie, Tell us About Your Book?”
As for your presentation, I agree with the other comment – people are coming to hear YOU and your story and insights. You will inform and delight!

    1. You are the best, dear Vickie! It’s almost like stepping out of our own bodies, isn’t it – when we talk about our books and the important loved ones that we share with others in our writing. You’ve mastered that – so well. Thanks for your always encouraging words. xo! 🥰
