Classic Rewind: Apocalyptic Brownies

Every now and then, a piece of writing, a post from the past still speaks to me. I smile when I think of these as my very own ‘classic rewinds’. Coming at you on this ICYMI-M (In Case You Missed It Monday). First published in August, 2022.

I love the pic of my favorite “Dad and daughter” (snipped in above).  There are days when I’m flummoxed by my good fortune.  How did I get so lucky?  I found a partner who’s put up with me for decades while reserving just enough patience to be a doting, loving papa.

What I enjoy most is the connection these two have around tools and knowing how to fix stuff.  Me?  In the face of full-on armageddon, I won’t survive because I have zero skills.  No hands-on capacity whatsoever unless it involves cooking or baking.

When the apocalypse comes, I’ll be whipping up a batch of brownies, just so you know.

Fixing something?  Home repairs?  Understanding anything about mechanicals, engineering?  Nope, nope and nope.  These two, however?  The gene pool richly rewarded our dear daughter, Delaney, with all of the how-to skills the world could offer – in the form of do-it-yourselfer DNA from her papa.

I suppose I contributed to some of her other talents (she’s the best negotiator I know) but this photo speaks to me – especially now.  She’s old enough to demonstrate that she has the blessed combo of people skills and smarts about ‘things’.

Delaney is a strong young woman with a caretaker heart and while I feel a sense of pride in her academic abilities and accomplishments, the fact that she knows her way around a toolbox means just as much.  Maybe more? She’s my independent, step back and let me do it girl – no matter the task.

After a job well done, she also knows how to kick back and relax.  Her papa showed her how to do that, too.

-Vicki 🥰

  1. Somehow, I think brownies would be preferable to tools in an apocalyptic setting.

  3. Don’t worry about surviving the apocalypse. To paraphrase a well-worn paraphrase, they also save those who stand and bake. Probably something else your daughter picked up form you – alway make the most off your talents, whatever they are. 🙂

  4. In the event of disaster, I’m sure you would be there to counsel those around you not to lose faith and encourage them to find a way through. You’ve more skills than you think, Vicki! Of course, the brownies would definitely help, especially with walnuts!

    1. Darn it…you’re right! I’d be there with brownies in one hand and a healthy of dose of ‘we can do it’ in the other. You’ve captured my essence! 🥰

  7. Love this post. I hear you about lacking the skills to make repairs around the house. I have to be the worst at that. But saying all that, I think you’re seriously diminishing the power of Brownies. “When the apocalypse comes, I’ll be whipping up a batch of brownies, just so you know.” Um, hello, when the apocalypse comes, brownies are the only thing that’s going to save us!!!!! The front door may be off its rocker, rain water may be coming in the ceiling, the world may be coming to an end . . . but you’re always going to want a good brownie. At least, I think so. Ha, ha, ha.

    1. Oh…thanks for ALL of that, Brian. One of my dear friends (outside of WP-land) chimed in this morning when she saw this post and asked “Do you know something I don’t??? Last week’s rewind was about singing in the lifeboats and this week you’re writing about an apocalypse??” To know me is to love me…I must be working out something in my subconscious…but thanks for agreeing that brownies MIGHT save the day! 😜🥰😜

      1. OH, I got ya! I had the same thought (lifeboats and apocalypses) but I thought it was pretty cool — What does that say about me? When your subconscious figures things out, let the rest of us know, we could use the help too. Ha, ha.

  8. It’s wonderful for our daughters to be able to do DIY. Both my girls are capable, but I’d definitely give Colleen an edge. Laura live streamed herself putting together an IKEA bed a couple of years ago. It was entertaining. 😂

      1. The funny thing is when she moved last year, we had to take the bed apart. Laura had no idea where to begin. Colleen went in her room and, in less than 10 minutes, “Hey Presto. The bed was in pieces!”

  16. I love the idea of classic rewinds. I’ve got 14 years’ worth of posts, and 90% would be brand new to most of my readers!

I am mechanically inept myself. Even worse, I can’t bake brownies, so I’ll starve to death while helplessly trying to fix the broken door!

  17. I’m with you Vicki. I’ve already announced to my family that they have permission to leave me, bite me, or whatever is happening during the apocalypse (i.e., alien takeover, zombies, etc.). I am in no position to be running, making things to live, or surviving, in general, under those conditions lol
