Book Club Fun

I had a terrific time last week visiting with a local book club at the beautiful Palatine Library.

I’ve said this before, but the unexpected joy that comes from receiving feedback from readers who thoughtfully absorbed my story and took the time to attend a gathering to learn more – about me, the process of writing and the predominant themes in “Surviving Sue” – amazes and delights me.

I’m grateful to my friend, Linda (pictured with me in the graphic above and in the group shot below) for her on-going support and endless inspiration. (Note: Depending on the device you’re using to read this post, you might need to click into the group shot in order to see everyone – including Linda.) Hearing that the story of your life is a worthy read is one thing but listening to readers who become dear friends and morph into champions – boosting me forward with encouragement – is unexpected and endearing.

Linda, very aware of the precious relationship I have with my disabled sister, Lisa, chose to support Gerry’s Café – a delightful coffee shop run entirely by clients who are intellectually and developmentally disabled. Just like my sweet Lisa. Linda arranged catering from Gerry’s for last week’s book club and we nibbled and noshed on delicious sandwiches and sweets, made fresh by the talented team at Gerry’s.

Energized and grateful after a fabulous evening, I went home and journaled about the terrific questions, insights and inspiration from dear readers. I’m looking at my notes right now, reviewing ideas that will likely inspire future posts about relationships, mental health, building resilience, promoting intergenerational healing and of course the power of humor as a wellness technique. My favorite idea? Writing a few more of the ‘untold stories’ about my life with Sue. There are so many…

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite feel-good comments from the evening.

A dear reader shared that as she read “Surviving Sue” she thought she was sitting with me in friendly conversation. Familiar. Warm. She said she was eager to turn every page to keep the “conversation” going as the story unfolded. I suspect that’s the sort of feedback every writer relishes. I know I do. Filled me to the brim!

Thank you, book club friends and Linda for organizing an evening I’ll long remember.

Vicki 😊

Your book would make an ideal book club read because of the many thought-provoking subjects, especially in terms of family dynamics and living with a narcissist.
