Reasons to Smile…

Reason to Smile – #1:

The 2024 Printers Row Lit Fest is set for Saturday, September 7 & Sunday, September 8, 10AM – 6PM. This FREE event takes place on the streets of South Dearborn, from Ida B Wells to Polk Street in Chicago. Come Rain or Shine!

I’ll be there, in the Chicago Writers Association tent on Sunday, September 8 from 10am – 2pm. If you’re in the Chicago area, I’d love to see you!

I’m excited about second trip to Printers Row Lit Fest having enjoyed a year like no other. Discoveries keep coming as I’ve grown more comfortable with my identity as a writer. Fully. Shedding the remnants of ‘imposter syndrome’ that I felt last year. Who, me? A writer?

One thing that’s helped more than anything else is the feedback from readers. I can’t say that enough. The gratitude. So much gratitude. Thank you for the questions, insight, input and the joy of receiving feedback that my story…Sue’s story…is helpful. Inspiring.

***If you haven’t read my book, please consider it (see link below for more information).

***If you have readSurviving Sue” and would be so kind, please consider recommending it to a friend. Someone who might enjoy a tale of perseverance and love.

Reason to Smile – #2:

This week my dear friend Kathleen shared a fantastic story, along the lines of ‘six degrees of separation’, Sue-style. I’m still shaking my head with wonder.

Kathleen – a bestie for nearly twenty-five years cheered me on while I wrote “Surviving Sue” and she’s mentioned in the ‘Acknowledgements’. Praise well-deserved for putting up with my bouts of insecurity and whining. (Yep. I’m a whiny writer when I get stuck, but thanks to friends like my dear ones Linda and Kathleen, I kept at it. Without their support? I dunno if I could’ve finished.)

Two days ago, Kathleen told me about a friend of hers, a travel buddy. A woman who had – and this is key – no knowledge whatsoever of me, my book or the connection. She reached out to Kathleen this week to say she read a book titled, “Surviving Sue” and noticed a “Kathleen Canfield” mentioned in the Acknowledgements.

Curious she asked, “Do you know a Vicki Atkinson – a writer? There’s a ‘Kathleen Canfield’ mentioned in her book. A thank you from the author. Are you, by any chance THAT Kathleen?”

To say Kathleen was stunned would be an understatement supreme.

“Yes,” Kathleen said. “That’s me. Vicki’s my friend. But how did you get a copy of the book, I never mentioned it to you.”

Here’s the crazy part. Kathleen’s friend received a copy of “Surviving Sue from an acquaintance who passed it along as a ‘great read’. Kathleen doesn’t know that woman, nor do I. It seems to be a fantastic coincidence. The Universe at work, pulling threads across many miles and across four States in the U.S.

I’m still smiling about the randomness. It reminds me that continuing to ask for support and readership is more than book promotion. It’s deeper, more personal. Tied to my purpose and desire to help others.

There you have it – two reasons for my big grin today. If you’re in the Chicago area, I’d love to see you at Printers Row Lit Fest on September 8.

Vicki 😉

  1. Lots of big grins here too, just reading this! Glad you’re out of the ‘imposter’ stage and are enjoying the process as a confident author. I’ll be sure to post a review when I read your book, and knowing a bit about yes, it promises to be a very positive review. Coincidences of the world never fail to amaze me. This one is right up there with the best

  3. Congratulations on continuing your amazing journey!
I have always found the six degrees exercises such fun. Scarily I’ve found myself even less than 6 from some pretty remarkable people, yet none of it rubbed off. Yet.

    1. Wrong! I’d say YOU are one of those “remarkable people”! Thank you, Michael! 🥰

  6. I’m dumbfounded. Wow, wow, wow!!! I love little bits of synchronicity like Kathleen’s friend ending up with your book. I always interpret moments like that as signs from above that I’m on the right path. How fitting than that this happened just before the Lit Fest. Ooh, Vicki, you are sooo on the right path!! Keep going!! 🥰

    1. Erin…Erin! I appreciate your cheers and good wishes. You and I share that compelling need – to know we’re on the right track, don’t we? It’s so much fun to have friends who come along for the ride and read between the lines, understand us. Thank you! Cheers to all of that PLUS synchronicity! 🥰

  7. “Shedding the remnants of ‘imposter syndrome’ that I felt last year. ” I get the impression of you walking into the Chicago Writer’s Association Tent and ripping off your jacket to reveal your SuperWoman Cape. Imposter Syndrome. No way. Here I am to save the day!!! Oh, it sounds like it’s going to be a blast. And too funny about your friend. Life and Coincidences. It’s funny how those things work. Ha, ha.

  9. Oh, this is so delightful! I’m thankful you’re able to shed that awful impostor syndrome and just enjoy being a “real writer”!

Last summer I was invited to a book club (former physical, occupational, and speech therapists) who all had read at least one Leora book and some had read the three available then. When they’d chosen them, one woman was stunned. We knew her from church much earlier, but she’s not on social media so had no idea I was writing. She recognized my name and photo. “I know her!” she told them. It was a delightful evening.

  10. LOVE that second reason for a smile. Coincidence? I certainly don’t think so! What is that famous expression—something about hard work combined with luck equals success? Whatever—I’m thrilled that such miracles actually happen, and that you are the beneficiary of one! Good on ya!!! 💕

Great story, Vicki! The randomness of life makes for these rare situations. My son told me about one of his fellow coaches who was on a recruiting trip in some rural Montana area. At the end of the day, the guy decided to stop at a bar to get a drink. He called my on to compare notes about their recruiting trips and referred to Ryan Coach Springer. After he hung up, another patron near the bar must have overheard him and asked if Coach Springer was from California. When the other coach told him he was, the other guy at the bar told him he was in a Mr. Springer’s class in Eureka, CA. That, of course, was me. I would LOVE to know who that former student was.

  14. Cool that you will be at this Lit Fest. And very cool about the passing along of “Surviving Sue” with one friend recommending it to another! The links along the way, then one person knowing Kathleen, and her name in the acknowledgements because she’s been a deep well of a friend to you. This post also put a big smile on my face! 🙂

Cool about the six degrees! My husband is a teacher. One year the principal received 101 Tips for a Happier Marriage from his mother as a Christmas present. (I cowrote that.) She got it because she heard my coauthor and me talking about it on the radio! She had no idea he knew me.
