When You Crack Yourself Up: Ghost Writer

Oh my. This story? It takes the cake. The whole bakery.

You won’t believe what I did.

At least I THINK it was my mistake. Let me explain.

I’m working on my project…my lengthier-by-the-minute manuscript that’s a fictionalized account of one of the threads in Surviving Sue”. One that’s intrigued readers, which I’ve taken as encouragement to try my hand at fiction. Expand on the ‘what if’. (Thank you, Dave Williams, for your recent post mentioning the magic and wonder of ‘what if’. I love synchronicity!)

I’m almost ready to hand my baby over to my treasured beta readers and gosh. That feels soooo good.

But as I worked on the second round of edits, I noticed something odd. I’d been sitting at my desk, butt glued to my chair for too long without a break. Playing that torturous game where I overestimate my energy and then tussle with the idea of giving up vs. hanging in.

Just a few more ‘graphs, I say.

Feeling fried, I read a sentence that’s a real attention-grabber.

And not in a good way.

In my story, there’s a large family with seven children. I’ve come to know them well, especially one of the kids who’s a protagonist in the tale. I squint at the text on the screen and read the sentence. Push my glasses up. Squint and read again.

Cue the giggles.

No where. And I mean NO WHERE in the months that I’ve been working on this project have I named any of the seven children “Scott“. And yet…there he was. Bold and sassy. Staring back at me in a sentence where I’d ceremonially listed the line-up of seven kids.

Who is Scott, I wonder? Where did he come from?

There is not Scott, I tell myself. He slid in from the great beyond. A scene stealer. A showoff. A nobody who wants to be a somebody in my story.

I get up. I walk away and then I realize. Whoever Scott is and wherever he came from, there’s a gem within. Although I’m sure it was a sleep-deprived cognitive lapse, I think…

Scott” is giving the concept of ‘ghost writer’ brand new meaning!

I’ll be on the lookout for him to pop up again as I trudge through a few more edits. I wonder…should I rope my beta-readers in? Ask them to be on the lookout for “Scott” lurking around as they read? Maybe so. Calling all supernatural editors. I might need your help!

Vicki 😉

  2. LOL. I’m pretty sure Scott is a sleep-deprived cognitive lapse (what a polite term for a brain f*rt!). Is he really a child? Is he tall, good-looking?! 😂

  3. “I’m almost ready to hand my baby over to my treasured beta readers and gosh. That feels soooo good.” I bet that does feel good. As far as Scott goes. Umm, I hate to break it to you but Scott is upset. He’s going to his agent. He feels like he’s the star of the show and he doesn’t make an appearance until page 205. Geesh! Next thing you know he’s going to rally the rest of the troops to strike. Ya better have a talk with Scott, straighten this guy out. Oh those sensitive actors. Ha ha ha 🤣 🤣🤣😎😎

  4. I think it’s often said that often the story writes itself — and in this case, the story is naming itself too!! Love this beautiful gem of a peak behind the scenes of Scott’s world… 🙂

    Happy Monday, dear friend! ❤ ❤ ❤

  7. They do say that characters often speak to you and come to life in writing, so it looks and sounds like Scott willed himself to life! 😆

Good luck and look forward to reading more about your writing progress!

  8. Like the flustered parent calling the youngest child and going through all the older siblings’ names before hitting the right one, you merely went one step too far. Clearly Scott is the sign of an impending sequel!

    1. You are the funniest. Yes! That’s pretty much how I felt typing out the names of the big family…do I have everyone accounted for….and then when I carried on…returning to reread I thought about the Walton’s and their ‘goodnight, John Boy’ ritual – often including all the kids.
      Thanks, Michael! 🥰😜🥰

  10. Great Scott, how bizarre is that?! I’m tempted to blame my brother Scott – he probably wants to muscle in on my book-writing territory. I certainly wouldn’t put it past the ne’er-do-well!

  13. That’s a curious intrusion by Scott! Have you recently read a book in which a major character was named Scott? Also, does Scott know the identity of the girl in the photograph that you took in a small town in France (at least I think it was in France)?

Scott stuff to the side… Sounds like your writing project is moving right along. That’s great to hear!

    1. Oh — look at you go! Love your questions. And what a memory about the French photo! Nothing I can think of…but maybe he’s waiting to make an appearance…’what if’ style!

  15. Vicki, the Scott story is hilarious, and I agree with Jane. You found a great term to describe the incident. I need to start using “sleep-deprived cognitive lapse” instead of what I usually say.

  21. The trouble with casts is that they enlarge, without heed, with every edit. My children somehow turn up in everything I write, and they definitely weren’t there when I started…
