Squirrels Gone Wild

Simple things delight me. Especially in the morning. Alone with my cup of tea, the BEST entertainment EVER came scampering in yesterday…a couple of squirrely bruisers stopping by for breakfast.

I know some folks are irked by the squirrels who eat their way through the pumpkins this time of year, but we love them. Their ability to bore holes through the flesh on the sides, like determined little miners, is amazing. Some pumpkins, however, seem to call for a ‘bottoms up’ approach. Such is the case with the gourd du jour. I’ll explain.

There are two burglars in this escapade. The first little dude took a turn, getting his fill of the pumpkins seeds that were left on the top – by the stem – before spelunking for seeds within with ‘hang ten’ flair. (See the slide show below.)

I love the “action shots” in pics #2 and #3. Hilarious. In pic #4, “Mr. Chubbs” is noshing and showing off his spectacular pooch. I think he’s been hitting the seeds pretty hard, don’t you? (Now I feel terrible. I just body shamed a squirrel who’s trying to bulk up for winter. What’s wrong with me?)

In pic #5, we have a character change. “Mr. Longtail” arrives and shoos Chubbs off the punkin’ mountain with a hiss.

Longtail’s technique was to dive in with the same gusto – in pic #6. You’ll need to look closely but you’ll see his sharp little talons catching some air. He noshed in pic #7 but that’s when I was discovered. See that angry glare in pic #8?

I think he’s saying…

“Hey lady…private party over here. Look away or go away.”

Of course, I replied and said good morning and with that, in pic #9, he turned away, giving me side eye and shoulder, along with a flip 😉 of his long tail.

I know it’s Halloween today and it’s all about the candy, but I’m already wondering how I can commandeer a few more pumpkins to keep my squirrel friends happy.

Thanks for coming along!

Vicki 🎃

P.S. Yes. I talk to the animals. Squirrels, deer and bunnies, too:

  1. Since you can talk with squirrels, I need you to come talk to Bert and Ernie, the two that have taken residence in my yard. Ernie behaves. He sticks to the woods. Bert likes to come up on the deck and makes me worry that he might bore a hole where he’s not welcomed (eave or rafter.) Or maybe I need to learn squirrel and take your advice. Funny post Vicki!

    1. Aww….Bert and Ernie? See — you’re enchanted by the squirrels, too, if you’re naming them! I know they’re pesky but maybe Bert’s just coming on the deck to say bonjour? 🌞🥰🌞

    2. My Favorite Guy once varnished the pumpkins on the porch. Didn’t even slow them down. When college-aged son Dan was home during break, I’d been journaling and watching squirrels. I happened to must that I might learn to tell them apart, when I heard a mutter about “getting a life.” hmmm

  3. I love squirrels for their cunning. They’d find a way to get at your pumpkins if they were hanging 10’ up in a tree! You should really have fun with them and make the game harder, Vicki! 😏🐿️

  6. What a wonderful tail, errr tale! I’d love a breakfast with a show like that. Keep talking to the animals and they may bring a pumpkin or two for you to watch them again knowing what a willing audience they have for their antics.

Squirrels are awesome- I love watching them jump from tree to tree on unsteady branches in the backyard. Fun read Victoria! 🐿️ (I know- that’s a chipmunk emoji but apparently they didn’t make a squirrel 🙃)

  8. Haha I love this. Who doesn’t talk to animals? I love those ever hated squirrels. Yes even when they carry the chestnuts from across the street and make a mess on my outdoor furniture. They’re so fun to watch. In the winter we give them peanuts. They go squirrelly for them. 🤣Sometimes they shell them and eat them at the scene of the crime. I too usually get pics. Yours are gorgeous Vicki. Great pics. Enjoy those early morning nature adventures. I can relate.

  19. I love that simple things delight you, Vicki, and what better entertainment than nature! Your pics are so cute, and your narrative is hilarious! We don’t mind the squirrels, but when my dog, Copper, was younger, they were the bane of my existence on our morning walks. He was pretty calm and cool until he saw a squirrel. Then he’d whine and jump up and down as though he thought he could really catch that little guy high on the wires in the sky. 🙂 Thanks for the fun post! 🥰

It’s amusing to think that for us, we have our annual rituals such as Halloween. Wonder if squirrels get those same anticipations too, like, it’s pumpkin time in the neighbourhood again. It’s fun to think about what they’re thinking!
