Loving Lisa & Supporting Her Team

I adore my intellectually disabled sister, Lisa, and many long-time readers know how grateful I am for the caring team which surrounds Lisa in her CILA (community integrated living arrangement). Her loving group home, staffed by dear ones who’ve become extensions of our family over the years. Staff members who work for the Clearbrook organization in suburban Chicago.

Lisa celebrated a milestone a few months back. Her twelfth anniversary of living and working…growing and healing…thanks the dedicated team at Clearbrook.

In addition to Lisa’s secure home life, she enjoys socialization and enrichment activities in her day programs. She receives mental health support and group counseling. And most recently, Lisa rejoiced when she was asked to take on a new role, giving her purpose, as a lunch time receptionist in the main office at Clearbrook.

Lisa’s life – with the support of her Clearbrook team is enriched. She’s a living example of the power of Clearbrook’s motto:

Enrich Lives. Embrace Potential.

Four simple words with life-changing implications. Lisa is healthier today – by far – than she was when she became part of the Clearbrook family. Our mother, Sue’s, destructive behaviors toward Lisa were increasing as her own health declined and the opportunity for Lisa to find a safe haven – with holistic, comprehensive support for her mental and physical health was life changing.

Today? Lisa stands tall. Proud and empowered. Despite her low IQ and innocence about the world, she feels valued and appreciated, surrounded by people who love her.

As much as Lisa’s flourished, thanks to Clearbrook, I’ve benefited, too. I have allies and advocates who share in my hopes and dreams for Lisa, and I know I’m not alone. Thousands of clients and family members benefit from the care and support provided; summarized in Clearbrook’s mission statement:

Clearbrook is home, a family, to over 8,000 adults and children impacted by intellectual and developmental disabilities. We care for them – and their families – by providing support across the lifespan, helping them to live their fullest lives possible.

I’m grateful to friends – near and far – who ask this time of year what they might do to support worthy agencies with charitable giving. If you are inclined to give, this is the perfect time to do so. Giving Tuesday comes up right after Thanksgiving in the U.S. on December 3 and I know Clearbrook would be grateful for donations of any amount. Click here to learn more.

With gratitude,

Vicki 💕

  4. Oh my gosh, Vicki, this post is filled with important messages, for people trying to determine what kind of support an intellectually challenged loved one might need and also for what any of us might need to reach our potential. That includes encouragement and appropriate supports (like friendships) to help provide us with a sense of self-worth. Clearbrook sounds like a gem of a place, with gems of people working there. 😊🙏🥰

  6. Oh my goodness, go Lisa go. Love how she’s so active and involved. Makes me think there’s a few lessons in there for — oh, i don’t know, maybe, me! The little that I’ve been involved with the developmentally disabled and special needs children my wife teaches over the years, I’ve learned about the power and need for allies. Loved your line about that. No man or woman is an island. We need help. We need others. Glad Lisa (and you) have it Vicki!

  18. Hi Vicki,

I loved reading this beautiful post about how Lisa is living her best life at Clearbrook with such compassionate support. And the fact that she is so involved is inspiring. You are the best sister anyone would want with the love and support you offer. I looked your book up on Amazon and only saw the kindle version. Is there a paperback? My preference, but I’ll buy the kindle if that’s the only option. Let me know. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this lovely post! Hugs xoxo
