Call Me Felix

When my friend, Michael Ross of The Real Reality Show Blog lobbed questions back to me after I nominated him for the “Sunshine Blogger Award”, I really needed to use my noodle. Not only did Michael put a smile on my face with answers to MY questions, but he turned the tables – straight away – and asked some gems of me. I love this one:

Question #5: Are you an Oscar or a Felix? And do you understand the reference or did you have to research it?

I mean…I know some of you may not roll with the reference to “Oscar or Felix” and if so, I won’t hold it against you…but I’m still smiling.

I think it’s because it immediately brought visions of my dad, Sonny, to mind. Among his many talents, he was quite the housekeeper. Far better than my mom, Sue. Sonny was a Felix through-and-through, and I know dashes of his DNA reside within me. Especially his neat and tidy routines.

Sonny was infamous in our house for scooping up the Sunday newspaper before it’d been read. Something about the scattered nature of newsprint on floors, tables, chairs sent him into a spiral. He’d loiter at first, wondering if he could commandeer the ads and flyers; the low hanging fruit in his mind…but they were Sue’s faves. She’d save them for last and whip out her scissors – tucked in the deep drawer of the mid-century modern table that she’d salvaged from the dump. Stripped, painted and stained innumerable times to blend in with the decor every time we moved. It held her Sunday morning tools: extra readers, pens, paper clips and envelopes in an array of sizes so she could clip, clip, clip away and plan her grocery shopping for the week.

When we moved (which occurred often) and she learned that larger towns in the 70’s and 80’s plopped their grocery ads into weekday newspapers or separate “saver” circulars, the whole cadence of her Sunday ritual was thrown off. She became a mid-week Coupon Queen.

But Sonny? He’d stalk her every day of the week to round up errant clippings. She’d get mad and call him “Felix” and he’d snap back and say, “I’m no more of a Felix than you are an Oscar,” and then add, “Oscar, as in Oscar Madison and Oscar the Grouch.” He swore the Sesame Street character was inspired by Sue. I knew what he meant. A sneaky way to fire back at Sue’s and her moods.

If you’re unfamiliar with the “The Odd Couple”, I’m happy to fill you in. The characters – compulsive neatnik Felix and curmudgeonly messy Oscar – were the work of Neil Simon, introduced in his 1965 play. A hilarious romp reminding me that yin and yang exist in many forms, including housekeeping.

If you’d rather pop the popcorn and settle in for a movie, you can enjoy “The Odd Couple” in the 1968 film version, featuring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. Slapstick and silly, just like their TV comrades, Tony Randall and Jack Klugman who played Felix and Oscar from 1970-75.

Thank you, Michael, for your question. This might’ve been a longer answer than you’d bargained for, but it sure was fun for me.

Yours truly,

Vicki…but you can call me Felix! 😉

Before you go, let me share one of my all-time favorite posts about my dad. He’s been gone nearly twenty-eight years but he’s nearby when memories come forward – like the rush of mountain magic.

  1. hilarious! I so got the reference! my dad and I watched it together and loved it! I am definitely more of an Oscar, my house is not dirty, but I tend to take a more ‘relaxed’ approach to order, and as I told my teaching partners, I’m more of a ‘piles, not files’ sort of organizer, but I can truly find anything you might need in the piles. interestingly enough, two of my grandsons, brothers, are Magnus and Felix and they share a room. Mags, is more like a Felix type of neatnik and Felix is more of an Oscar. ))

    1. Love ALL of this…especially “piles not files”. I’ve never heard that before, Oscar…err…I mean Beth. And for what it’s worth, I always think the “Oscars” in my life are far more creative. Describes you! Love that you have a matched set in Magnus and your own Felix!
      Xo! 🥰❤️🥰

  2. What a cool question to ask! I recognized the character names but would have needed to do some research to learn what they each were like. Your story sounds a bit familiar for my parents too only with the roles reversed. Mom often liked to “over-clean”😁

  3. I remember watching The Odd Coupe on TV and thinking it was hilarious. It was an innocent show, but also based on human nature that everyone could relate to. Regardless of your age.

    1. Ohhh…you said that so well, Ally. Innocent. I think I’m being drawn into retro TV for that reason. Feels lighter. Thursday hugs to you! 🥰

  4. Felix and Oscar are iconic to those of us of a “certain age.” 🙂 I enjoyed your post, Victoria, and the way you described how a version of that fictional duo was real to you via your parents.

  5. They were quite the pair weren’t they Vicki. I’m kind of an oddball in that I tend to waiver between both of them. I have my little piles and am not overly a clean freak but when I reach my limit I can be Felix on steroids. Mess up a dish … it has to go right into the dishwasher. My big thing is I don’t like to put off cleaning, meaning do it once, don’t put it in the sink to be done later. Ha ha, oh I recognize how annoying I sound!!! Ha ha.

    1. Not annoying! I think you just described how fluid we can be…reflections of my mood and personality, for sure. Some days I can tolerate more — piles and such — some days far less! 😜🥰😜

  6. Great answer to a “trick” question, Vicki. I also got the reference right away, fun memories of the past. Me, I’m somewhere in between, sort of a Felar!! 😂💕

  7. That’s such a fun movie. And I like your memory trip of how Sonny inspired your Felix-ness. I’m more of an Oscar. But every other month or so, I get a rush of Felix-ness and feel compelled to do some cleaning. Even Oscars can get tired of the messes! 🙃

    1. I love it…”a rush of Felix-ness”…yes! A sight to behold. Sounds a lot like hubby, Paul! 🤪🥰🤪

  8. Jane has the right idea. Right now I am in a class on the Oresteia. Not exactly an Oscar/Felix story, so it’s nice to take a break and think about them instead. Thanks, Vicki.

My mom clipped coupons for years too, and so did I, until I realized I didn’t want or need much of what the coupons were enticing me to buy! Ha!

  11. I can literally hear the opening music to the show as they are standing outside their apartment and Felix stabs a cigarette butt Oscar has just thrown down. SO good. Since I have no mental image of either parent excelling or lacking in housekeeping, it makes sense that I fall in the middle, haha. I love your memories about the newspaper and coupons and the constant back and forth between your parents, Vicki. That is such a great slice of everyday life story; very real. 😊

    1. Love that you can hear the song! I used a clip of the opening theme when I posted on FB and IG this morning. A toe-tapper for sure — and your recall of the opening credits and the cigarette butt moment! Yes! It said so much about them. Hugs to you…your inner Oscar, Felix…but mostly just you — the Magnificent Melanie! 🥰

  12. Whoa! Your nickname can only be aspirational, but thank you! 🥰 I was a huge fan of The Odd Couple and the actors who played them. It feels like they don’t make comedies like that anymore!

  14. Thank you Vicki for a wonderful response to a more unfair than fair question. I love that my innocent query pulled such memories for you. But they all do. Questions that is. For the record, I’m a Felix through most of my lives but my office, though not full blown Oscar, would give Felix pause.

  16. I knew the sitcom somewhat, mostly by reputation, but never saw the movie until just a couple of years ago (back when Netflix still shipped DVDs in those iconic red and white envelopes). It was pretty good!

And I am most definitely a Felix.

  19. Wow, that was a great question. I’m familiar with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. I watched their first movie and The Odd Couple II. But I wasn’t familiar with the 1970s show. There are definitely a couple of Felixes and one Oscar in this house. 😆

The Odd Couple was a memorable duo. I haven’t thought about them in decades. I’m somewhere in the middle between Oscar and Felix.

  24. GREAT question and answer! And yes, I know the reference – It was one of my favorite shows…. I love your reference to sonny and Sue and how the odd couple really resonated in your home.

I think my SIL would call me a Felix because I am constantly throwing out water bottles and soda cans before the person is done dirnking…ooops…. I’m very felix about the floors too. but I also have a lot of oscar in me – if you could see my desk you would know! Great Blog, Vicki!
