Sharing and Healing

Maggie Watson is a joy.

Her depth of understanding about the human condition is evident in her beautiful prose and poignant poetry. She exudes purpose in her writing, revealing the potency of healing through creativity and the power of sharing our stories.

I love that Maggie understood the threads of empathy and compassion in “Surviving Sue“. Mental illness and addiction are complicated monsters and although my life with Sue was difficult, I also understood, over time, the root causes of her pain and found a pocket in my heart to offer forgiveness, years after she passed away.

When a reader like Maggie lets me know I was understood I feel seen. And bit by bit, more healing occurs.

Here is a portion of Maggie’s generous review, offered like a gift of poetry:

Vicki’s courage and strength shine throughout this book,

and I could sense empathy for her mother despite what she suffered.

All mental illness has a root cause, I believe, and often requires

a deeper level of understanding

I applaud Vicki for writing this book with grace and sprinkles of humour, too.

These things are not easy to survive, but somehow we find the strength

to do so, and sharing our story is part of the healing.

Understanding Sue in all her facets – insanity mixed with humor, good intentions run amok. Maggie’s words make me smile. Sue was seen, too. Her flaws and failings mixed with her genuine desire to do better, be better. Even when it was beyond her grasp.

Maggie Watson…thank you! I’m grateful to know you…excited to read more of your work.

  1. What a useful review Vicki.
And Sue was seen too! Reminds me of the years of therapy I had which all too frequently went back to the relationship with my mother. Finally I managed to forgive and importantly (for me) to realise she did her best with what she had! The good enough mother(?) hey. Mmmm ….
    Sending love 🥰

  8. Nice review. Parenting isn’t easy, especially when you didn’t have a good role model. I read an article this morning that pointed out five things which were the norm in 1990 and are wrong today. I know I made my mistakes and I can only hope my children are better parents than I was, and their kids are better parents than them. Healing is part of the growing process. Peace.

  22. I love the “new” realization that within Surviving Sue, “Sue was seen, too.” That is an important perspective to get across to others and the fact that there is forgiveness in that. I truly am happy that your book continues, after two years, to connect and receive such insightful, positive and important reviews. It’s wonderful!
