Lightening Up

Goodness landed in my lap this week as I work through the final round (she said hopefully) of edits to my work-in-progress and I can’t help but share.

I revel and rejoice when heartfelt and timely input arrives. Blessed are the readers – beloved beta readers and members of my writing workshop – offering invaluable input. Diving into the story, sharing their delight AND offering input about enrichment.

In it to win it, with me.

A dear one offered a glimmer of an opportunity after pondering the first chapter. An idea sitting right under my nose, waiting for me to see it. She said, “It’s an old adage but a good one.”

Your opening scene should carry the ending, the resolution…but deftly. In its shadow.

I don’t want to give anything away, but that thought – that singular thought – helped me reframe, rethread the needle. But…the seemingly straightforward edits had tentacles…connections within the story resulting in a laborious editing quest.

Looking for relief, I stepped away from my desk to tackle some overdue and urgent (see me smirking?) decluttering in my office and stumbled over a forgotten gem. A motivational antidote arriving in well-chosen words from Yeats:

“Go forth, the teller of tales. And seize whatever the heart longs for. Have no fear. Everything exists, everything is true. And the earth is only a little dust under our feet.”

-W. B. Yeats, “The Celtic Twilight”

What I needed was perspective – time away from my project in order to fearlessly embrace a revisionary idea followed by a smattering of self-talk.

A reminder:

I write because I enjoy it and hope readers will find pleasure in it BUT I’m not solving the world’s many problems.

Just write, Vicki. And lighten up.

Yup. Nudging myself to tell this tale and get ready for what comes next.

Vicki 💝

P.S. This isn’t the first time I found comfort in prose from Yeats. This post is still a favorite:

  1. That Yeats fellow was pretty smart. My favorite line of his. “Just write, Vicki. And lighten up.” Oh you mean he didn’t write that?!?!🤭 I love that you were able to step away, give yourself some grace, and come back to it and find your way. Can’t wait to hear more about this project. 😎😎😎

  7. Vicki, these kind of reset pauses for reflection and rejuvenation have to help so much along the way. Indeed, the journey is sometimes as or more rewarding than the destination in writing. While the finish line is ahead, it always means a lot to enjoy the process and the “pushes’ that get you there. Enjoy the journey!

  19. I’m so excited you are getting close to the end of your WIP! Can’t wait to read it when you are done. I love that quote about the opening needing to carry something of the ending in it. I’d heard something like that before, but it was more in terms of the ending needing to point back deftly to the opening! Either way, I love that idea of closure, or a complete entity rounding itself out.

I also love the Yeats quote, and now a headed toward reading your other post about Yeats! (I quoted him in my novel you may remember at the beginning from The Second Coming.) I’m not surprised we like the same poets!

What happened here?” It’s so good to read a story that ends well and leaves the reader satisfied. I know yours will.

  26. When I read this, I immediately thought of author Steven Pressfield (whom we discussed) and his words. “How can you tell when you have a good inciting incident? When the book’s climax is embedded in it.” Why do I know this? Because it’s written in my notes and I took that very advice. I hear you! 😊 Oh, and how I can relate to the significant re-write to improve it. You will do it, Vicki! It’s who you are, and you will be SO happy you invested the time. 💕

  28. Congrats on being close to the finish line – and for being so open to feedback – I think that says a lot.

The title here was great and I used to have a Christmas shirt, with holiday lights on it and it said “lighten up” – and I sometimes used it to remind folks to lighten up and not take everything so serious all the time. We need serious, but – well – um, you know….

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m smiling…so big! I love your comment, Yvette. Yes…”lightening up”…so many ways to think about the power of those two words. And I’m with you. There are tremendous needs all around to be serious and service-oriented…protective, especially of increasingly marginalized folks. But I can’t carry the weight all the time and still be productive, creative. I bet you know exactly what I’m trying to say. Much love! 💝

  30. Your mention about having time away is so good. I feel like I re-learn that over and over again. I can get really deep in the forest of a project that I sometimes feel like I’ve gotten lost in there. But taking a break can be really helpful to looking with clearer eyes. Best wishes on your big project, Vicki!
