Everyone Has Something to Give ❤️

Time, energy, money, positivity...

I believe everyone has the capacity to make a difference and the originators of “Giving Tuesday“, a tradition started in 2012, say it best:

“Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.”

This year “Giving Tuesday” falls on December 2 and I hope you don’t mind, but I’m highlighting my favorite worthy organization, Clearbrook, once again. Thank you to those of you who responded so lovingly – with comments and kindness, monetary donations and volunteerism efforts last year – in support of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, just like my sweet sister, Lisa.

I wish I could say circumstances have improved over the past twelve months, but I can’t. There is a dire cloud hanging over the heads of those who are different, vulnerable, in need. Not just dear ones like Lisa, but individuals who’ve been maligned and disenfranchised due to horrific decision-making in our nation’s capital. I’m not one to be overtly political, but the most recent insanity from our President, once again using the derogatory “R” word…is beyond me. The bullying is shameful and sadly, it makes the road he’s paved with his ignorance and arrogance worse than ever. My dear blogging friend and author, Vickie Rubin, wrote a powerful piece on this topic last year and here we are again. Please take a look: “The ‘R’ Word Cuts Like a Knife“.

My sister is a blessing, a joy and a gift. Like her friends, coworkers and the staff at Clearbrook, they deserve praise and support for their fortitude to keep going. Never stopping. Lobbying for what’s right thanks to a relentless belief in the power of good.

Last year I highlighted Clearbrook’s impact in this post and the need, sadly is still great. Join me, this coming Tuesday, to consider where and how you might support worthy causes. Every dollar, every hug, every high five offered to the warriors who keep at it…soldiering on in the face of scurrilous choices matters so much.

When I drove Lisa back to her Clearbrook group home after the Thanksgiving holiday we passed two scenes of activists and protesters, weathering the cold while seeking charitable donations for local food pantries. Lisa’s not able to read much beyond that of a second grader but she understood the signs and what they meant, picking out the words “kindness” and “food“. Lisa’s big heart – her desire to help others despite her own challenges – invariably makes me a better person.

And so…thank you for being here. Thank you for reading. Love and hugs – from me and Lisa, too.

  1. You needn’t apologize for being political, Vicki. No one should. Free speech, unused, can be a capitulation to those who don’t want people to use it.

Last year, during the holidays, my children, my wife and I decided to set aside giving gifts so that we might give to charities chosen by them in lieu of presents.

Thank you for encouraging your readers to show the heart you show every day.

    1. Thank you, Dr. Stein. I’m ever grateful for your support and encouragement. Leading the way with your family decision about donations instead of gifts (often things most of us don’t need anyhow). Sending hugs your way this snowy morning. ❤️

  3. Vicki, best wishes to your sister Lisa. It’s unavoidable to be political these days — as the dismaying politics, words, and actions of the Trump regime negatively affect the lives of almost everyone. 😦

  7. A great cause, Vicki. 💕 It’s too bad the current climate is one of such antagonizing vitriol and towards our most vulnerable. I’m glad Lisa has a great place to shelter her and I hope they continue to get the support they need. 🙏

  8. Vicki, first off the best to you and Lisa. Thank you for spotlighting Giving Tuesday here. I have always wondered what we could do for the world if Cyber Monday money all shifted – even for just one year – to Giving Tuesday. There is so much need in the world, and we should keep that in mind not just at the Holidays, but every day. Helping others is part of our mission on Earth as far as I am concerned.

  9. I hear you, I hear you, I hear you. My jaw dropped just this weekend regarding another horrible remark he made. I am at an utter loss for words. Your words, however, shine through clear and dear for the causes that need help. Thanks for being a warrior, Vicki; for Lisa, for Clearbrook and for all who need it.

  12. I didn’t know about giving Tuesday. I will do what I can. The “R” word drives me crazy and the fact that our president uses it, well, there are no more words I can add to what you’ve already said. But you and I know everyone is a blessing, a child of God to be cherished.

  14. Leaders should inspire and, well, lead. To use that word, as you beautifully point out, is shameful. It makes the road so much harder for everyone else. Thank you Vicki for pointing out Clearbrook’s beautiful mission and thank you so much for your message that everyone has something to give. We need that message more than ever. Thank you both Lisa and to You!

      1. When I saw the tweet, I thought a number of things . . . certainly some of my wife’s kids over the years. But I thought too of Vickie’s past post and your posts about Lisa. You know this so well, but Lisa might be limited in her reading and face a few challenges, but she has something Trump will never have: A beautiful, kind loving heart. Ugh. Thanks for advocating and for your post!!!!

  15. I cringed the other day when I heard the big cheeto say the R word. Seriously? Even worse, it was directed at a person rather than just a casual comment. His blatant disregard for common decency and courtesy makes me sad and angry—mostly angry.

  18. no reason to apologize, the politics are impacting and hurting so many good things in the world, and we need to fight for them.

also, every reason to let the world know about wonderful places like Clearbrook, standing up for and supporting those who need a little extra help getting through life. I sent them a little donation to use as they see fit, and I know that every bit helps. I hope they have a great response on giving Tuesday and many days to come. it’s programs/places like Clearbrook that can make all the difference in people’s lives. Bravo to them.

  20. I’ve never understood why some people who would never make fun of someone with a physical disability somehow think it’s okay to make fun of those with developmental disabilities. How is that different? We’re part of the problem if we don’t speak out when someone makes an ignorant crack about riding the short bus or other derogatory phrases.
