How “Surviving Sue” Inspired a Novel

I know. I’m still kinda shocked about it, but if not for feedback and input from readers of “Surviving Sue”, I’m not sure I would’ve been inspired to write a novel.

In large part, I have the delightful Wynne Leon to thank. My dear friend is wildly talented and I dare say…fearless. She inspires me with her drive and ambition and her willingness to explore the outer edges of creativity.

You might know Wynne as a fellow blogger and author, but she’s also the talent machine behind two podcast platforms – “Sharing the Heart of the Matter” and the fabulous “How to Share” – chock full of inspirational leaders sharing secrets about how to be their best selves, through…you guessed it…mastering the fine art of when, how and what to share.

I was lucky enough to visit with Wynne last week on “How to Share” to dive into the ever-sensitive topic of giving and receiving feedback. There are oodles of contexts – but despite the growth opportunities inherent, one’s disposition to receive and the variability in how and when input is offered, can result in drastically different outcomes. My dad would say it’s a finesse test. Oof. Yes!

I’ve dropped a few teasers about my latest writing project (thanks for riding along) and in Wynne’s latest “How to Share” episode she asks the BIG question. Even though it’s still in progress for early 2026, it’s never too soon to work on the proverbial elevator pitch (says Wynne, always right there with encouraging words). So many feelings wrapped up in one question. I’m not known for being succinct, but I gave it my best shot (see below – starting at about the 2 min mark):

Watching it back I think I could’ve summarized my work-in-progress in four words: It’s a ghost story. My mom, Sue, had a final gift up her sleeve – a dose of writing inspiration tucked into family history, long buried. Literally. I just needed to do a little spelunking to find it. And therein lies the creative spark. The wonder and the what if…

Thanks for being here…thanks for listening and/or watching and please don’t forget to subscribe and peruse the episodes on both channels – “How to Share” and “Sharing the Heart of the Matter“. Your support matters!

  8. A ghost story! Uh-oh. Ha ha, Are we talking Casper the Friendly Ghost or the Headless Horseman. Or are we talking the four ghosts in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol? I’ve always been partial to the ghost of Christmas present (the muppet Christmas Carol version🤣🤣). Anyway, so excited for you Vicki to see where your project takes you.

  10. Even if your mom plays the role of a ghost, Vicki, she is no small presence. Indeed, in step with your first book, she seems to be tracking you. Or perhaps this is a way of settling matters so that she takes a smaller role in things. Whatever, you have made a complicated life into one that touches many hearts. Few of us do as much to improve the world.

    1. Love your perspective, Dr. Stein…tracking, settling. I feel all of those bits, and I can’t help but believe Sue would be tickled with the story. And oh my…what a generous compliment. I’m not sure I do much, but it’s such a relief to be who we are, n’est-ce-pas?

  13. first of all, you two are so good together, yin and yang. very comfortable in conversation and this one was really good. asking for and being open to receiving feedback is so important in any creative project and I’m imagine it to be be imperative when writing a novel.

you made good points here about learning to separate yourself (your ego), from your creation, and I’ve heard movie directors say this was hard for them to do as well. when you said that your brain expanded over the process of going through this, it made sense because you had to learn a new way to be open to asking for and listening to feedback. you are brave to have undertaken this project, and I look forward to reading it when it’s ready.

  21. I heard the podcast, and it was awesome. The hints about your WIP were good. I think it’s going to be a good one, but I’m getting the sense that people might need to read Surviving Sue first to get the complete picture. I don’t know, we’ll see.

  22. I loved listening to your podcast on sharing. I began it earlier this week and had to put it on hold, then finished up today. I’m so impressed by how you managed to cover all aspects of giving and receiving feedback in ways that really resonated with me, and my experience on the subject, and then topped that with things I hadn’t considered before. Very helpful for my next novel. Can’t wait to read yours. xxoo
