Hello, Henry

“Smile, breathe and go slowly.”

-Thich Nhat Hanh

One of my favorite things about the week in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is finding pockets of quiet. During one of those interludes – after I’d cleaned up the kitchen for the ten thousandth time – I stopped and made a cup of tea and figured an apple might be a better snack than another handful of cookies. Good intentions, right? But the Honeycrisp I’d squirreled away in the fridge – neglected due to the aforementioned cookie cavalcade – didn’t wait for me. By the time I got to it, she was pretty darn mushy in the middle which meant only one thing: squirrel or deer snack.

Let’s just say the deer never had a chance.

By the time I cut the apple into chunks (foregoing the mushy parts because I didn’t feel right sending mush into the yard for any creature) my squirrel friend, Henry, was waiting (see pic above). He’s pretty photogenic, huh?

I sighed and sat and Henry did the same – scampering to a spot on the deck near my tea sipping chair, allowing me to be a voyeur while he feasted. He paused to give me a look every nibble or so and I swear I heard him thinking,

“Thanks, lady. You’re alright, you know?”

Cheers and good tidings this morning – from me and Henry, too. I’m certain he thinks you’re pretty alright, too.
