Leave Things Better

It was such a treat this week to read my dear friend Nancy’s blog. Her gorgeous photos of nature, home and hearth never fail to delight – especially when a boost of loving kindness is needed.

It’s been a heavy week – one where I’ve sometimes felt incapable of articulating the helplessness I feel about the struggles in our country right now. I could say more, but if you know me…you know me…what I’m feeling and thinking.

But there are bright spots and two arrived in tandem, reminding me to keep my peepers open to catch the glimpses of goodness. They’re around…like those in Nancy’s blog and her photos of the gorgeous “snow moon”.

I did a double…and then a triple take.

Nancy’s pics looked so much like my pics…I was dumbfounded. Until I realized, no matter what’s going on, leaning into near ones and dear ones is a great self-care strategy…moonlit message style.

Here are the two pics I took. Now hop over to see the uncanny similarity to Nancy’s photos (they appear toward the end of her post).

The morning I marveled at our moonlit pics, I found a memento – a sweet paperweight long forgotten – in a box of items I’d saved from my higher ed career:

When colleagues give you a going away gift and repeat a well-loved phrase back to you, it’s a moment.

For years I lived and worked by a motto instilled in me by my dad – “Always leave things better than you found them…”.

It was his empowerment focus. Leaders, he’d say, never know what they might encounter and although some obstacles may appear insurmountable, staying on task is key.

“Even when you can’t right every wrong, do your best. Leave things better than you found them.”

The paper weight was a sweet parting gift, offering an echo from my dad – a phrase I’d evidently used often without realizing it. A lovely complement to the gratitude I feel when I read Nancy’s weekly blog, always full of brightness and light. Sometimes moonlight. Reminding me we’re in this together, doing our best.

Vicki 💝

Lagniappe? P.S.? No, you’re not wrong! In last week’s post my eyes were heavenward, thinking about clouds and my dad. Stay tuned…who knows what he might stir up for next week. Whatever it is, it’ll be straight from my heart…maybe his, too. Thank you so much for being here.

  1. I just a long conversation at the market yesterday with a lovely woman about synchronicity. I’ve found, especially when things are tough, they’re timely reminders that we’re part of something larger than ourselves and that we’re being looked after. Hang in there, Vicki! Sending big hugs xox 😘

  3. YES! The photos are so similar – showing no matter where we are, we are together – your dad’s phrase – “Always leave things better than you found them…”. is one that Mitch uses when we RV – wherever we go and park, we need to leave it better than when we got there… your dad’s phrase is all encompassing – and politically speaking, they need to hear his words now more than ever! Thank you, Vicki, for this beautiful post – XOV

  4. Great photos on both posts! There have been some beautiful moonlit skies here too lately with all snow just reflecting light everywhere. Stuff like that helps me balance things out with when things elsewhere are what they are now.

  5. Such a lovely post to wake up to. Like you I’m struggling with the heavy weight of all that has befallen our country, especially for the immigrants swept up into concentration camps and so I’ll treated.

Your photos of moonlight were so beautiful, as were Nancy’s. I needed that. Your father was so right. We must leave things better. I hope we will be able to do so for our country and this next generation.

  7. That is a beautiful message, Vicki, and a great way to live and lead our life. The world is certainly a tumultuous and precarious one and so hard to fall into the feeling of helplessness – but there is also so much good to focus on. And the people doing their best to leave the world a better place than they’ve found it.

And finally, wise posts from blogging friends like you. “Even when you can’t right every wrong, do your best. Leave things better than you found them.” Such great advice Vicki. Describes you to a T! In today’s world, the only thing getting me through these tough times is enjoying life’s simple pleasures. A photo of the moon from out my back door, or that pretty cup filled with delicious hot coffee, or your paper weight reminding you to leave things better than you found them! I try to remind myself we will get through all this, somehow, someway!🙏

  23. I am such a believer in that philosophy. It started when my kids would go to parties. I’d tell them don’t wait to be entertained–become part of the fun. Now, when I visit their adult homes, I always try to do something they need doing–fix a dryer or a recalcitrant WiFi. Besides helping, I feel better!

  24. Beautiful post, Vicki. That should be the driving force of all humans—to leave things better than we found them. We need to continue working toward that goal, regardless of all the craziness we’re living through. I’m still hopeful that things will change for the better. There are many good people in this country who are ready to clean up the mess we have on our hands once the toxicity is gone and return to the democracy that we all love.
