“Slivers” – Party Pics!

Whoa my goodness. What a good time!

I don’t know if the measure of a great party is the amount of laughter, or the amount of food and drink consumed, but it’s safe to say those targets were met at the Slivers Launch Party…and then some.

I love Barrington’s White House for its rich history and my personal connection to the Classical Revival beauty, dating back to my high school days. Being there to celebrate “Slivers” was surreal but I wasn’t expecting an actual sliver to make an appearance.

Call it what you will, but even my photographer friend, Frank, won’t say for sure where this odd sun streak came from. A nearby window, or not? And my closed eyes? We looked at the pic after he took this shot of me with Rick Kaempfer from Eckhartz Press (my publisher) and it was fine. No sleepy-eyed moi.

Entranced by a sliver wafting by? What’s with those suspicious streaks…tickling my right cheek?

Stranger still? The morning after the party, my dear friend Melanie McGauran said she hoped no slivers made a guest appearance at the event. Did she know something I didn’t?

I’ve got a follow-up visit planned with the event coordinator, Sharon, to do a little spelunking in the White House’s attic to review archival pics from its glory days in the early 1900’s. I can’t wait!

I’m on a mission.

A friend from the Barrington Writers Workshop confided in me…sharing she once saw nurses in vintage, starched white uniforms floating down the grand staircase (just over Rick’s shoulder in the pic above). After the Robertson family passed away, the mansion was used as a hospital during the WWI flu epidemic, and later as a rest home. My mind is whirring…wondering what Sharon and I might find.

Here’s what I know for sure. When you write a ghost story, folks have plenty to share.

Quiet, whispered confessions about their own “unexplainable” experiences and I love it. I can’t say categorically that I believe in ghosts, but as the author of “Slivers”, let’s just say I believe in the unbelievable, head scratching events wrapped in magic and mystery.

Thanks to early reader interest, I’m drafting suggested book club questions about “Slivers” and I’ll share those soon. And Mark Petruska — I might call on you for ghost busting services. You’ve been forewarned!

Now for the photo fun

Purchase my book directly from Eckhartz Press and if you enjoy it, I’d love your thoughts on Goodreads.

Thanks for your support of this indie author and her publisher. Even though you’ll need to hang tight to receive “Slivers” via conventional mail, I hope you’ll find it worth the wait.

Last but never least, hugs and love to you, Joy Neal Kidney, for your fabulous post yesterday about “Slivers” and “Surviving Sue”. I’m a lucky girl to have you in my corner. Many, many thanks!

Vicki 💝

P.S. Lagniappe? A little more? Eagle-eyed readers will appreciate photo #6 in the slideshow (above). I’m not saying an ancestor from the 1600s joined us for the launch party, but I’m not ruling it out, either.

Congratulations on your launch party, Vicki. The only person who was missing was Bill Murray. Have you thought of contacting him? He might give the book a boost!

Don’t think it was only a joke. I got to interview Carlo Maria Giulini, the great Italian conductor, simply by writing him a note. I also got Bob Green to write a column about the reunion of the Zeolites, fulfilling a 36 year old promise, just by calling his office at the Tribune. Stranger things have happened!

  6. This looks like the event of the season and you look gorgeous! I love all of the pics and captions , so lighthearted. Excited for you to go in the attic. Keep notes for another book. Maybe write about what you expect to see before you go. Then the rest of the story begins when you go- Of course I have my personal ghost experience just like you sad many do. When you mentioned ‘silvers’ I thought you meant ‘aged and experienced’ people like myself.) had to laugh when I saw were in your picture, that’s so cool.

  8. What an amazing and well deserved turnout, Vicki! It truly looked like THE party of the summer – very cool. I did laugh out loud with the “appearance” of your ancestor in your photos, you crack me up. ☺️ I’m glad that you shared the excerpt you read to guests, I was curious about what section you would share. And as for the sliver appearance; I just know that they like to be a part of things, that’s all. 💝😉💝

I’ve never had any personal experiences with ghosts, though I’m certainly open to the idea. My wife says her dad visited her right after he passed, though that was only a one-time event.

        1. Yay! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed it. I’m still wondering if I keep going with the “what happened next” aspect — I’ve started to write what could be another book about these characters, ten years later, but I feel like I need to wait and see if there’s enough interest in this book first. Appreciate your support, Edward! Thank you! 💝😊💝

          1. You’re very welcome, my friend. That’s very interesting, and sounds like a good plan. While you think about that one, maybe Surviving Sue needs a “part 2” of sorts, but I need to put my thoughts together in a note first. After reading Surviving Sue and hearing one of your talks, I think there is more there.

And yes I have my copy sitting on my desk. I keep looking at the house on the cover. So very spooky. I’m going to be reading your book with one hand over my eye. My other eye will be reading and looking out for the crazy ghost that’s going to get me. Ha, ha. I’m kidding. I can’t wait to read Slivers. So happy for you Vicki. Book Number Three is just around the corner!!!! Like the ghost in the Barrington White House attic!
