Version Roulette

I know, I know. A Monday post? Not my usual frequency here on WordPress but today’s a great day for a confessional. Or is it a rant? You decide…

A giggle popped up in my social media feed a few months ago. Let’s just say the almighty algorithm accurately detected my editing mania. Less about the editing itself, mind you. More about the ridiculousness of document naming conventions.

Version roulette.

Exhausted but unable to sleep, my mind continued editing minute aspects of my first-ever novel, “Slivers” late into the night when my Deadline (capital “D” on purpose) loomed. Do you do this, too? Edit in your head? No paper or screen necessary. No writing implement or keyboard required.

Phrases and whole sentences nest in my brain, pulsing for attention because something…undetectable at the first, second, third or 99th glance…needs attention. Sleep eludes me. Instead of counting sheep, I’m visualizing passages and getting lost in woodsy paragraphs of my own making.

When sleep deprivation and editing desperation are at their worst, I’m lulled into false epiphanies. Eager to bring closure to loose ends and fueled by overblown optimism, I bounce from my bed and head to my desktop and make adjustments. Tweaks at 3am are dangerous, though. For the exact reason this spot-on meme cites:

When the sun rises and I rattle cobwebs from my brain, guzzling iced coffee #1, I see a new draft in my inbox. One I emailed to myself for safe-keeping but with a curiously unique document name–one that gets lengthier with variations of “last”, “final”, “final.last”, “final.xxxx.date”.

Which brings me to a confessional moment:

Every now and then a friend or family member will inquire about my reticence about drinking alcohol. Many who’ve read “Surviving Sue” assume I’m a teetotaler, a sober gal because of the harrowing experience of living with my wild alcoholic mother who also had massive mental health issues. True, that’s one thread. But the actual truth? Sober me is pretty darn wild and crazy au naturel with a tendency toward recklessness when it comes to record-keeping, especially if sleep-deprived. A Vicki who imbibes? Good golly. I’m sure I’d never unravel my own knots. Writing-wise and otherwise.

So dear friends. If you’re in the midst of a BIG project or you’re contemplating how to get organized to begin something new, know that I’m sending loads of positivity your way but no expert guidance. My best advice? When in doubt, save, save, save and occasionally email your work to yourself. And…consider adopting a document naming schema. One you’ll stick with. Just a suggestion. And get some sleep.

With love,

Vicki 💝

  2. Thanks again for another shoutout! I laughed all through your post. I also label my manuscript files with final, latest, newest, etc. I also email them to myself from time to time after two times because of computer issues I lost my latest, final versions! The creation date helps 😅

    1. I know…so random…but this piece has been sitting on deck and I finally had a moment to finish it up. I loved the writing advice from you and Brian in some of my previous post before “Slivers” took over entirely…fun to go back and re-read and of course I needed to tag you both in! xo! ❤️😊❤️

Honey Chile, I email myself all the time because it’s when I am away from my laptop and in BED mind you in the wee hours of the morning, I am awaken by sugarplums of typewriter keys dancing in my head! 😝

  8. Ha ha. I can relate to this.

Do you remember the early days of PCs when file names were limited to 8 characters? In some ways that wasn’t a bad thing. It avoided this problem but created a whole bunch of others. How on earth can you name anything in 8 characters that will let you find it again? 😂 Book1v1 to Book1v99 to Bk1v100!

  11. I just listened to an episode on the ‘hidden brain’ podcast that I love. It was about the research on how our brain keeps working when we walk away from a project, a question, a solution, a puzzle- why we often have an epiphany when we’re sleeping or away and doing something calming, taking a bath, gardening, etc. our mind is open to explore all options , all possibilities exist. They gave some examples of famous people of all kinds, scientists, doctors, musicians, writers, etc. major breakthroughs came through when they gave up, and walked away from it for a while or went to sleep, which gave their brain space time and space to think of a solution.

    1. Wow!!! Sounds like an awesome listen, Beth! Walking away — giving space. It reminds me of something I’ve read about Einstein problem solving at his best when he walked barefoot…getting grounded and stepping away. Thanks so much — I’ll look for the podcast. Sounds terrific! ❤️😉❤️

  12. Oh love good editing jokes. An old editor used to tease us that if Thomas Jefferson had to deal with the rest of the Continental Congress editing the Declaration of Independence then we would have to get used to a little checking of our handiwork.

    Here’s one more for you:
    “First Draft: Done on Monday.
    Final Edit: Done on Tuesday.
Final Edit V2: Done on Wednesday.
The “Wait, change this one word” Edit: Done on Sunday at midnight.

  19. Hello my friend, I enjoyed this post and oh my goodness – I was relating to the final, final, final in the saving – I had so many final drafts on a project recently that I put in “3pm” and then “5pm” final as there were so many that day and I needed the latest

And your musing and editing this in the night reminded me of the beauty of immersing in a project so much to where it becomes part of our essence. Not all writers immerse like that and not all projects can lead to it – but when it does happen – I think the final product is layered with that essence of the author and the extra depth is there. In between the lines and in the energy that fueled the written pages.

Sending hugs your way as you get the final finals led to the actual final – haha

    1. Haha, indeed! Love YOUR musings…making me feel less alone! So lovely to be in your good company, talented Yvette. Love your take on “layered essence” when we’re really invested and immersed. So spot on! Sending love! 💝

      1. I am accepting that love and appreciate your warmth – and in my view – any book that disrupts the authors sleep is going to have something extra for passion and investment.

side note – I spent a cpuple weeks with my momma – doing non-emergency doc visits – which was so much more enjoyable than helping for an emergency – ha – but we were in Wal-mart and I looked over and saw a huge amount of seasonal clothes on clearance and smiled to think back to your other book.
Yup. Our found family stay with us in the most fun ways

And….Glad you had a giggle at Walmart…almost like I was right there with you, sister friend! Found family indeed! 🤪❤️🤪 You’re stuck with me!

          1. well I did not think you would worry – but thanks for saying that cos that is what found family does – ha
and the reason i mentioned it was because the last three of my four visits were for emergencies – and whew – how nice to do the routine visits and chillax a bit. hahahha
And actually I was so sleep deprived on the first doc visit (just a lot going on before I arrived) – I was staring at the blinds and not even paying attention to their back and forth.
My attention was not needed that time – but it was funny how in the car my mom asked me what i thought about the doc’s comment on changing one o fher meds and I said “mom, I have to be honest, i spaced out on that part of the talk as I was so tied and started staring out – wondering why the blinds did not really line up – and I was just decompressing” – and we both laughed – because it showed how non-emergency it was – and that was a good thing. Hope your Wednesday goes awesome

            1. Love it…staring at something in the vicinity that caught your attention — a wonky little scene. 🤪
You know this to be true — those moments where we slip away and let our minds wander, fixate on little bits of this-and-that…they’re like mini breaks of almost quiet for those of us with overactive brains. Decompressing…yes! Little bursts of powering down. 🤪❤️🤪
