Peek Inside: “Slivers” – Surprises Await

Edward Ortiz offered a wonderful review of my new book – “Slivers” recently and I couldn’t be more grateful. If you’re not following his blog you should be. Edward’s detailed book reviews are like generous invitations, welcoming readers to learn from his insights. A review about “Slivers”? I was…and am…honored:

“This is a great supernatural novel where three characters—Jane, Katie, and Eric—find themselves dealing with inexplicable phenomena that have actually been occurring for generations. The author does an excellent job of connecting the past with the present, developing the mystery of the Slivers and the Hiraeth (a portal of sorts that provides a thin space between worlds where the impossible happens). The story really picks up the pace once you reach the chapter titled ‘The Accident – 1965,’ and I couldn’t put it down after that. Watching Jane, Katie, and Eric unravel the truth behind these encounters, with the help of a character from the past, kept me hooked until the very end.”

Grateful! And I’m just as pleased with Edward’s knack for picking up on nuances. Threads in the story that a writer wishes/hopes/prays readers will detect and be entranced by.

I hoped readers would find a teeny bit of awe in an ancestral discovery in my story. I’ll explain…

Right smack in the middle of writing my first ever novel, on a whim, I poked around in my mom (Sue’s) family history……and tripped over details about our heritage in Scotland. Completely unexpected and fantastically informative, it added zest to the writing in progress. I still get chill bumps when I think about who I found in the family tree and the opportunity it presented, weaving a newfound character into “Slivers”.

Here’s what Edward said:

“One thing that fascinated me was how Vicki discovered an ancestor while doing her research and connected him to the story.”

My mom would’ve been enthralled by the discovery. Readers of “Surviving Sue” might remember tales about Sue’s compelling personality — both tormentor and charmer. Hmm…ancestral trait? Peeking into her family tree put a spotlight on our complex family history in ways fabulously unexpected. And informative.

Thanks so much for riding along with me as I share more about my latest book. Your input and feedback — here and on Goodreads — means so much.

“Slivers” is available exclusively in paperback from my wonderful, independent publisher in Chicago — Eckhartz Press. Thank you for your trust in me and your interest in my story.

Last but not least. Edward Ortiz? You are amazing and I’m grateful for your friendship and support of “Surviving Sue” and “Slivers“.

Vicki 💝

P.S. Coming soon? Two more resplendent reviews – thanks to talented writers Lori Pohlman and Pete Springer. Wow. Just. Wow.

  7. Thank you so much for your kind words, Vicki. It was my pleasure to read Slivers and provide my thoughts. Your story is impactful, and my hope is that your readership continues to grow, and that you have more speaking opportunities to share how you survived Sue, the mysteries surrounding your family, and those slivers that want to be everywhere. Happy Sunday, my friend!

    1. You make such an excellent point, Edward. You are right about my intentions and ambitions — to continue sharing what I’ve learned in workshops and presentations. I should probably do a whole post on that topic — how important and impactful it’s been for me to have positive feedback here on WordPress for those who book me for events to see. Assessing credibility is a big job for groups and agencies, libraries, etc. when they scout for speakers and I’m honored by my supportive family here. It makes a difference. And of course, having you in attendance at Harper back in November was a highlight for me!
P.S. I just confirmed I’ll be at Printers Row Lit Fest on Sat Sept 12 from 10-12:30! Woohoo – hope to see you there. 💝

      1. Yes, a post would be wonderful. I think more people need to know your story, and based on some of the questions presented during your November talk, I think there is a need to hear more about your personal experience and how you navigated all of that.

Good to hear that you are going to be at the Printers Row Lit Fest. Awesome! 🙌🏼 God willing, I’ll see you there. 🫶🏼
