When You Crack Yourself Up: Sleep Deprived Style

I love friends who know me well enough to provide a swift kick when I need one, sometimes with a knowing giggle.  I’ve got a few relentless jokesters in my life, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.  (Well, maybe a cookie, today I’ve got a hankering for a cookie and I’m not gonna lie – I might trade a friend for warm chocolate chip treat.)

I don’t know why, but I cannot get a good night’s sleep to save my soul.  I’m doing all of the ‘usuals’ – exercise, fresh air, eating well – heck – most of the things on my “Top 13” list.  But still?  Sleep eludes me.  Time of life?  Hormonal? Maybe.  I dunno but it’s beginning to be a pattern and I’m cranky about it.

I sought comfort and commiseration yesterday from one of the aforementioned jokester/girlfriends – one who typically possesses abundant wisdom, but she decided to offer sassy humor instead of an actionable suggestion.

Contextual note to you, dear reader: When I’m tired, humor hits me one of two ways – no middle ground. I either collapse in a heap, overcome with giggles – so much so that bystanders might think I’d been nipping at the cooking sherry (whatever that is) OR I become teary/angry, lamenting that ‘no one understands me‘. This time? My funny friend managed to rattle a chortle out of me. A pleasant, restorative chortle. No tears or angst.

Her pithy offering?  Something she spied on Pinterest and saved – just to share with me, because she said, “You’ve become a whiner about not sleeping well and I thought of you when I read this.”

Huh! You mean I might be award-worthy for making it through the day, sans nap? I like it. Yes, that’s me. I pulled an ‘all-dayer’ yesterday and I might do so today. We shall see.

Since this charming anecdote was passed to me, I hereby honor you with the same recognition. All-Dayers United…but just the same…if I fall asleep in my soup later, don’t judge me.

Vicki 😎

  1. I almost wish I could relate. After living with fibromyalgia for two decades, my achy body needs three naps (usually about 25 minutes) to get through the day and I sleep well at night. Just think what I could get done if I didn’t need those naps!

    1. Oh, Joy – I wish I could send relief your way. I have a dear friend who’s been battling fibromyalgia and she’s made peace with napping…for just a few minutes (20 or so) and it helps her immensely. And I say you do plenty — naps or not! Hugs to you today! 🥰

  2. I find journaling and writing a to do list clears my head for sleep…I tend to get restless when I have too much running around my head…

    1. Ah yes…I remember you and I share a love for the ‘looking ahead’. I’ll try your evening journaling routine — it might be a strategy I should adopt. 😘

      1. That reminds me of taking clients of my husband’s out to dinner at a fancy restaurant in Palm Springs. The husband had three double martinis and fell face first in his soup. His wife picked up the conversation without missing a beat, drawing away our attention. The husband sat up, wiped his face like nothing happened! I’ll keep the man nameless, but he was an actor on General Hospital back in the day before I had kids. I wouldn’t share this story except they have long passed away.

        1. Some days…I really wish I had a camera on my face when I’m reading comments from blogging buddies. Your comment just now? Face planting in the soup – literally!? Oh my. 🤣 And you’re such a woman of discretion for not witnessing and telling. I know you’ve had some fun and exciting adventures with celebrities, but I have to be honest – this one might be my new fave!

          1. The memory has me laughing so hard right now, I’ve got tears. After dinner, they invited us over to their house to taste some exotic tequila 😂

            1. Oh my…exotic tequila…on top of whatever else was prompting the ‘swimming in the soup’? LOL! And I forgot to mention that the fact that his wife didn’t miss a beat and kept on talking was hilarious, too! 😎

              1. It’s almost as though the wife had experience with her husband face planting in soup!

                1. I know, right? That was my EXACT reaction. She just sighed and thought ‘oh, THAT again’. LOL! I’m still giggling. 🤣

  4. I have mornings when waking and realizing that I had a full nights sleep brings on wonder and delight. While most of my heavy over-thinking late nights are gone, on occasion they still pop in, as do the “it feels like 200 degrees in here” moments and also the after impact of my full days hydration efforts. Wynne’s post on gratitude was a nudge to be thankful for those wonderful mornings after all-night sleep. I hear and read that aging does not help 😉

    1. Oh my goodness…you nailed it. A good night’s sleep and you feel superhuman. Yes! And I love the gratitude reminders, especially because I think we’re reading the same ‘stuff’. This is how it is! xo, Deb! 🥰

  5. I’m with 200 degree Deb. A good night sleep is like the best gift a morning can have. I finally resorted to acupuncture, and it’s made a world of difference. I highly recommend it early so the bad habits that creep in with no sleeping well don’t start. Good luck.

    1. Thank you for that, Bernie! I have another friend who swears by acupuncture to help her with restless sleep issues. I need to check that out. Hugs to you this morning! 🥰

  6. That’s too funny. When I wake with a good night’s sleep… I pretty much do a happy dance! I can fall asleep with no problem but then around 3 a.m. I am wide awake. I have been know to get up and clean or read. Then sometimes I go back to sleep but wake late…which I do not care for waking late!
Hope you sleep better. Some say to try using lavender scent on you bed linens.
Happy 4th of July weekend to you. (With all the firecrackers… sleep may be disturbed.)

    1. What IS it about 3am that seems to be our nemesis? Wide awake in the middle of the night. I like your idea about lavender or scented linens, in general, but I need to come up with the right soothing scent. I’m allergic to lavender and it annoys me greatly because I love the scent! Thanks so much for stopping by Nancy. Here’s to an early, Happy, 4th of July to you, too! 🥰

  7. Oh, our crazy friends in life? Ha, ha. You should have given it right back at her. “Hey, at least I’m awake for you, but now that I think of it, you are putting me to sleep.” Something lame like that! As far as needing a good night’s rest, you’re reading my mind again. I’m usually a pretty good sleeper, but both my wife and I were wide awake at 3 a.m. last night. Anyone for a dance party in the wee hours of the morning? 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. LOL – sure! At least we would’ve burned a few calories and the ‘dance party’ exercise might’ve put us in slumber mode! And YES – I’m great at coming up with ‘come back lines’ after the fact. Yours would’ve been a great one! Here’s hoping everyone gets some good rest tonight! 😜

  8. My husband naps every single day. I normally can’t nap, but I have fallen asleep on the sofa reading twice in the past few weeks. I think it’s getting used to my 5 a.m. versus 6 a.m. wake up time. Some nights I sleep all the night through. Others, I check the clock every two hours. What a difference a good night’s sleep makes.

    1. Gosh yes…you forget how amazing it is to sleep for several hours at once – LOL – compared to what you described (the up every couple of hours nonsense). I do that, too and I hate it. Cheers to your hubs for taking a nap and following his body rhythm. I need to figure that out! xo, Elizabeth! 🥰

      1. Here’s to a good night’s sleep tonight! We’re swimming this afternoon, so that should help. Sometimes, it has the opposite effect 😢

      1. I’m delighted to hear that you are enjoying Voices, and of courseI would be honored if you wrote about it. Thank you for even thinking about it! I flunked “all dryer” — had to succumb to a nap. Some days are like that. What a great term—’all layer’! 🥰😍😘

  10. Here’s a comment from yet another sleep-deprived reader! A full night’s sleep, which used to be one of my super-strengths, would be beyond a dream come true. I think I may try Bernie’s suggestion of acupuncture! 😳😴

  11. Okay, I’ll admit this to you, if I continue drinking coffee until it’s time for wine, I will not sleep a wink. No caffeine after 3:00 pm or I’m like one of those walking dead people. I can not turn my brain off. And to make matter worse, I resent Larry for sleeping soundly so I’ll roll over repeatedly, or I’ll wiggle so the bed shakes and then I have the audacity to giggle when he wakes up. I’m a horrible person and I blame coffee. Hugs, C

  13. Well it’s 3.23 am on my kitchen clock … so definitely relating to you. I’m afraid I don’t have any solutions … but warm cookies sound great … I can almost taste them … but im looking at my table … I could virtually share an empire biscuit with you?

    1. Sounds yummy…and I’m not even sure what an ’empire biscuit’ is…but I figure time spent with you, even at 3:32 am, with a biscuit, would be good fun. 🥰 Maybe we wouldn’t care that it was the middle of the night! Truly – hope you were able to get back to sleep. I don’t know why or how but I got a solid six hours last night and I’m thrilled. Sending hugs (and a cookie/biscuit – warm and wonderful) to you!

  14. Ha ha! An all-dayer. I like that. Seriously though, I share your frustration with sleep deprivation. I have been a terrible sleeper for most of my adult life. I do all the “right things” suggested by the experts, and none of it matters. I fall asleep easily but rarely stay asleep for more than 2-3 hours. After I wake up the first time, I spend the rest of the night alternating between short bursts of sleep and waking. The struggle is real.

    1. Ah! You described the dilemma perfectly, Michelle! “Short bursts of sleep” — yes! We need to figure out how to STAY asleep. 😘
Thx for giggling about the “all-dayer”, too! 😜
