Peek Inside:  “Surviving Sue” – Launch Party

Book signings, launch parties.  Fun stuff!  Now that I’ve crossed that threshold, “Surviving Sue” is officially in the world. The opportunity to celebrate with friends and family was wonderful and overwhelming.  Join me as I share a few photos and insider info.

The Venue Matters:  The launch party location couldn’t have been more perfect.  Known as “Barrington’s White House”, the 1898 Classical Revival mansion has been painstakingly restored to its former glory as a venue for celebrations of all sorts.  Thank you to my dear friend Laura for all of her advice and wisdom about the venue…and everything else. 😊

Fun fact? I was a frequent visitor to the house when I was a punky high school student. The house fell into disrepair and the ramshackle shell that remained was subdivided into small businesses, one of which was a Xerox copy center that I frequented often.  Late assignments and all…in the pre-digital age when actual hard copies of everything were required. Including homework.  😉 Thanks to community-minded preservationists, the old girl was lovingly restored a few years ago.  This week I stood in the corner of the foyer several times and I swear I caught a glimpse of my sixteen-year-old self, reflected in the old lead glass.

The People Matter:  My terrific publisher and his lovely wife attended.  What I didn’t know until a few weeks ago?  We have mutual, longtime friends. (I’m talking 30+ years).  Chit-chatting about my book with my friend Irene, she casually noticed the name of the publisher on my book.  “Wait, wait, wait!” she screamed.   “Your publisher is ‘Rick’?  Like – our friend Rick?”  Life is not random. There are layers there that could commandeer this entire post, so I’m moving on. Here are a couple of photos from the signing table. Meet my author friend, Bruce, publisher Rick and one of our guests, Tammy:

  • Friends who love you will text you on your big day to send encouragement and it wasn’t an idle remark when they say they’d be there if they could.  I felt it. My phone was chirpy all day as I received text messages and calls from dear ones who’ve been important parts of my life and are proud of me.  I loved every single outreach.
  • Friends who are family…mostly chosen family in my case… show up with bells on.  Dear friends who know me 😉 and love me anyway…opening doors, providing support, reminding me that my book is worthy, impactful. I had a circle of smart men and women around me doing just that…in the planning stages and during the event itself.
  • Friends who drive hours and hours just to attend…just to offer an embrace and a whisper, “I always knew you could do this.”
  • Friends who realize you forgot to sign their copy of “Surviving Sue” and request drive up service. A new-fangled book signing method? Pancake house parking lots! Why not!?

Magic Moments…when our daughter said she also wanted to speak at the event, to talk about the importance of “Surviving Sue” as a tool for intergenerational healing, I was nervous. I’d already packed a box of tissues to have on hand, just in case. Between her remarks and the loving goodness from my dear ones Laura and Linda? Sucking back tears isn’t one of my talents and I ought to learn how not to contort my face in public. Thank goodness for the hubster (Paul) and ‘dear daughter’ (Delaney). Aren’t they adorable?

Food and Fellowship Matter. Although I was too busy and anxious to eat, the caterers were amazing. Food and friendliness galore. Even better? I had beautiful encounters with catering staff members who also bought books. “Your story touched me as you spoke. My family has challenges, too. I can’t wait to read.” Micro-bursts of meaningful conversations unfolded as I signed books and wished readers well. Overwhelmed by the interest and connections we humans make as we forge bonds over shared experiences.

The afterglow is real.  Thank you for your continued interest, for reading and for sharing reviews and comments (on the Surviving Sue” page).  I’ll have some good news to share soon about the eBook, so watch for that.

Vicki 🥰

P.S. My post on Heart of the Matter this morning is all about an empathy moment that followed the festivities...a reminder about simple, everyday goodness and the importance of caring for one another. ❤

    1. Thank you, Brenda! There are a couple of things swirling as a result of the kick-off event and if all of that comes together, it will be lovely! Brian was hilarious asking if I’d be ‘on tour’. If something magical happens, I’ll declare an urgent need to get to Scotland to meet my fellow writer, Brenda. Deal? xoxoxo! 🥰

      2. Vicki, congrats, I had no idea you had this in you. By the way I saw your note about an e-book version. If you ever get to the point of wanting to do an audiobook version, I have a friend (former Harperite also) who has recently started doing that with her books and is very pleased with the audio results, pricing and overall professionalism of these voice artists. Let me know and I’ll connect you two.

        1. Don! How are you!?! Thanks much for popping in to say hello and for your kind words. My friend Wynne and I have been having fun with podcasts on our other platform – Sharing the Heart of the Matter – and that’s prompted questions about audiobooks…so nice to get positive feedback from folks – hearing that we’re easy to listen to. Appreciate knowing you’ve got some solid connections. Thanks for that!

  8. Congrations on your book signing, Vicki. My copy sits beside ‘my’ chair waiting for the moment I can sit to read cover-to-cover undisturbed. I love the fact that your face is so connected to your heart. It shows a sign of realness that rivals the veleteen rabbit…and that is a very good thing. ❤️ I look forward, down the road a few months or years, when you write about how this entire experience (and it is not over yet) has healed and opened your heart and the hearts of others. As my Aussie friends would say “Goodonya”!

    1. Maggie…thank you so much for your heartfelt kindnesses. I don’t know what sort of wonder is at work but the kinship and friendship I feel with you is real…and your mention of the Velveteen Rabbit makes me so happy. I don’t know how you’d know this, but it was a favorite of my mother-in-law, Maxine, and I imagined her by my side, throughout the event…happy for the ‘realness’ of the love and emotion. Somehow you captured that just from the photos. And what a lovely thought…hmmm…I need to start thinking about what comes next and your idea is one that others have mentioned. “Goodonya” right back to you. xo! 🥰

I am touched you have such a lovely connection to the book as well. I look forward to witnessing your path moving forward. I know it will be something special. Rest while you can!

  11. Cheers!! What a gift to celebrate the release of your book alongside loved ones, dear friends, and strangers struck by your words – “My family has challenges, too”. Beautiful!! 💕 The story you share is such an inspiration. No matter where we’ve been or what we’re faced, humans are uniquely equipped to overcome and rise above adversity and, Brene Brown would say, your story may serve as someone else’s survival guide. Love seeing you surrounding by so much love and support!! 🥰🥰🥰

  13. This post was a wonderful way to get to join in on some of the events Vicki, thank you! I can only imagine how much love and encouragement you felt and I hope that strength helps as you reflect quietly and in your own space about this journey- which I might guess isn’t over yet. I am sitting with Sue, still trying to formulate a way to take in and put into words my own responses to the book and nothing seems adequate. I don’t think I have the power to grasp such a surreal yet real lived experience but I wonder if now that Sue has made her existence known by your words and stories if perhaps there will be/should be the tale of the triumph of Lisa and Vicki in the future- a pathway to the full (I hope) story of healing and moving ahead that you both continue to pursue.

Now matter where, when, or even if, Surviving Sue leads you to write more, I feel truly lucky to know and stand alongside you-such a courageous woman.

    1. Deb…dear Deb. Just as you said you’re not sure you have the words to share about “SS”, I feel inadequate about how to respond to your thoughtful, lovely comment. Thank you doesn’t do it, but I’ll offer it just the same. 💕 I think the insightful question you’ve raised (about ‘what’s next’) is one I’ll need to wrestle with a bit. There DOES seem to be interest in the ‘how’…regarding making it through all of the turmoil (Lisa and I both) and while I have many thoughts about writing about that, in some ways it’s even more personal and gut-wrenching than what I’ve already written. I love your capacity for depth and understanding the layers in all of this. You see and feel so much. I just know it. Perhaps we’re TWO courageous women who found each other — thanks to WP? I feel privileged to know you. xo! 🥰

      1. Oh Vicki, there can never be any outside push to put more of yourself forward than you already have. It must come from within you and only if there is that need to say more. We only know deeply within ourselves what is correct, no matter what others may want to experience. I know you are a helper by nature and while I see that “going beyond Sue” to be a help to many, that road can only be fully under your control if you choose.

I will gladly accept your kind words regarding my personal levels of courage, yet to survive Sue and to bring Lisa out of the fray, that shows just who Vicki really is. I know as I read deeper into the book, and remembered moments with my own mom that I said out loud to you “Why are you still there? How can you stay and take this? Get Out!” Yet there was Lisa… It is one thing to make those decisions for yourself as an individual, but to feel the weight of responsibility for another person who has limitations and to stay for them is incomprehensible for most of us. That is beyond any level of courage I have ever faced.

I am the one who is privileged and sending hugs to you 🙂

        1. You are such a gift. Truly! Yes — you understand the most important thing of all. As much as I wanted to escape and could’ve, I knew I was Lisa’s only real hope. And as I see how well she’s doing today, I know I made the right choices – but still have regrets that it took so long to see all the threats, in 360, especially those directed toward Lisa. And yes – I think I’ll know when/if I can tell more of the story. You are wise, wise, wise. It will only work if/when I know in my heart that I can… or if I should leave some things in the past. Love your insights. How is it that we’ve only just met…and not even in person? LOL. and love, love, love to you! 🥰

      1. My hair is naturally curly so it doesn’t spike well, despite my best efforts. We used food colouring to dye our hair funky colours and sneak out to see midnight viewings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Then we’d wash the colouring out of our hair before going home. My parents would have killed me if they knew. I think that’s why I didn’t mind when my daughter Laura dyed her hair pink, purple and blue as a teenager. She was living my best life!
