Top Three? How Do You Choose?!

Thanks to Cheryl Oreglia and Joy Neal Kidney, I learned about a super cool resource for writers and readers a few months ago.  It’s called Shepherd and it’s a wonderful way to learn about beloved volumes.

When I decided to participate in Shepherd’s latest project, I had no idea I’d be among 882 other authors doing the same.  I think you’ll love perusing the lists.  The Shepherd team did a fantastic job of organizing authors’ pick by genre.  Such a resource!

Here’s the link:  883 Authors & Super Readers Pick the 100 Best Books of 2023 (shepherd.com)

One of Joy’s books, Leora’s Dexter Stories was a close runner up on my own list of three favorites.  The same is true for Cheryl’s delightful book, Grow Damn It.

And my other author friends?  Golly, it was hard to narrow my list. If Shepherd ever does a “Top Ten”, I can include more of you! I’m big on inclusion and it pains me to leave anyone out. Every day I find myself learning about other beautiful books written by talented writers. My list continues to grow.  So many writers, so little time, but I’m going to keep reading…and writing…with gratitude to all.

In the end, I selected these three impactful reads:

Read all about it here to learn why Wynne Leon, Jennette McCurdy and Lois Roelofs’ books are my top three.

Cheers and love to all the readers and writers!

Vicki 🥰

  1. Lois and Wynne certainly deserve to be read. A nice shout out, Vicki. The Mc Curdy book also sounds interesting.

    1. Thanks, Dr. Stein! Trying to stay within the “memoir-ish” genre, I felt I had to include McCurdy’s book. It helped solidify some thoughts about my own story – what I wanted to share and what I didn’t. And always — cheers to Lois and Wynne! 🥰

  2. Yes, too hard to choose! When you sign up with a recently-published book (which I’m about to do), you get to choose 5 related ones!

  3. Nope, please never ask me to choose a favorites list of anything. In most areas I can be decisive as heck, knowing what I like and sticking with it, but rating a list of books is hard. I read often by mood, or go in phases when I find a topic I want to learn more about. I feel stressed even thinking about having to rank what I read 😉

  6. It’s very hard to pick just three, isn’t it? Glad to see Wynne’s book on the list and will have to look into the other two.

  7. Oh, my goodness, you’re killing me Vicki. I can see that I’m going to love Shepherd. Oh, it looks really cool, but here’s the thing, my books to read list is getting longer and longer and I’m falling further behind!!!! Ha, ha. I hope you’re going to be writing next about how to catch up. Ha, ha. I loved Wynne’s book, loved seeing her write about her dad’s wisdom. I’ve been meaning to read McCurdy’s, I feel like it will definitely speak to me, and wow, Roelof’s book sounds interesting too. Thanks so much for the suggestions!!!!

  9. What a fascinating resource. Three faves in one year? Oh my, my selections would seem like fluff compared to yours.

    1. LOL…I had my category of other faves…but trying to stick with the memoir genre, I held back. We should swap our complete lists sometime. I love when you write about things you’ve read and loved. 😘

        2. Hi, Crystal – I reached out to David Stern at Eckhartz Press and he located the first shipment – and the tracking showed that the package stalled in the Chicago area and hadn’t moved in several days. I just heard from him again and he said he’s sent another book…the first one might be on a very slow boat…or train…or mule…but you should’ve received it several days ago. Crossing fingers that this second try gets to you! Thanks so much. 🥰

          1. Aww! Thank you so much, Vicki! I’ll keep my eye out for that mule traveling southbound from Chicago. 😉

  11. I love this new book resource – what a cool mission that Shepherd’s have. I’m beyond honored you’d pick my book. Three is hard but Surviving Sue would be on my list as a book that inspires such great heart, resilience, with laughter and perspective along the way. How blessed we are to be able to write our stories. And I’m so grateful our two intersect, my dear friend! ❤ ❤ ❤
