Thanksgiving Delights

I grew up enjoying David Letterman’s special brand of irreverent humor.  Considering how provocative and outrageous comedy has become, Dave’s mild-mannered grumblings and observations seem ultra tame in the looking back.

Odd, though…my dad disliked Dave, sharing often that he was no competition for his beloved Johnny Carson. Loyal to a fault, dad thought Letterman was an imposter, but I don’t think his disdain impacted the late-night talk show ratings.

In the 80’s, Letterman’s brand was radical and goofy.  Less stodgy, I’d say to my dad.  He’d harrumph a little and remind me that Carson’s comedy sketches were far more original that Dave’s goofball bits. Maybe so, I’d say…but do we really need to see Loni Anderson from WKRP in Cincinnati fame on the sofa with Johnny – again and again?

But I digress…I’m talking turkey.  Or trying.  Let me be clear.  I’m not anti-Loni OR the show.  As a girl who hailed, for a time, from Cincinnati, I’m a fan.  I just thought Carson’s guest lists were predictable and boring.  But I also wasn’t a middle-aged man then…or now.  So, there’s that. 😉Uninformed about who I’m talking about?  See the pic above. Loni and Johnny in the B&W photo from one of her appearances on “The Tonight Show”.

And I should remind you, dear readers, that if you’re a fan of funny and you’re unaware of another WKRP iconic reference, you really should learn about Les Nessman and his live broadcast involving turkeys. Just saying. Nessman is also in the collage above – looking like the journalist and reporter he aspired to be. If you’re up for some vintage 1978 television fun, click the link to view a three-minute YouTube clip. Heck. Even if you’ve seen it a zillion times, you should watch it again. Silly and stupid go together. Always.

But back to Letterman…If you remember him in his heyday, his ‘top 10 lists’ spawned so many riffs and rip-offs that I think he deserved a medal of honor for helping we, the often-uninspired leaders. Struggling to come up with witty openers for boring speeches and presentations, a top ten list often saved the day to hook an audience.

Dave’s quintessential lists, driving the anticipation about what, oh what might sit in the #1 spot were fun.  Satisfying late-night schtick because it was predictable, and light, just the thing for an audience ready to snuggle under the covers at bedtime with Dave (well, you know what I mean). Give me knowing chuckles and delight me with one-liners as I prepare to drift off.  Thank you, Dave.

And this news just in… a late-breaking development. I just read that Dave will be back on late night tv on Monday, November 20, joining Stephen Colbert in the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York…Dave’s old stomping grounds. Wow.

I wonder if he’ll bring back his iconic brand of Thanksgiving fun? My all-time favorite quip about turkey day came from Letterman’s “Top 10 Signs You Had a Bad Thanksgiving”.  I don’t remember the year, but #9 was a winner for plausibility alone…especially when my mom, Sue, was alive:

Sue loved a big turkey feast…so much so that I should’ve mentioned her beloved turkeys in the acknowledgments of “Surviving Sue”: “Thank you to the many turkeys over the years who gave their lives in order to prompt hilarity of all sorts, and eventually, provide nourishment to those assembled.”  Here’s what I mean:

“Surviving Sue”, p. 84

During yet another Thanksgiving run amok, turkey legs were airborne during dinner – being thrown from one end of the table to the other. It became too laborious to pass food like grown-ups, so Sue (after several hours of pre-feast drinking) started a food fight with the launch of the first drumstick – just like a missile. Everyone was laughing; stunned at first to see her lob a leg in the air, but it only took a second for more food to fly. First dinner rolls, and then more turkey, and before it was all over, there were sweet potatoes on the wall, mashed potatoes in everyone’s hair, and big globs of congealed gravy everywhere.

Lisa’s friend Michael was with us that year. He was one of the “extras” who became a regular during those odd years without the aunts and Uncle Keith. We had no idea at the time, but Michael was slowly dying and would be gone in two years. Wherever Michael’s soul and spirit are today, I’m certain the Thanksgiving food fight was his most epic and fantastic adventure. He talked about it endlessly afterward. A definite peak experience and as we learned more about him, we understood why the insanity of it all and the laughter – mountains of giggles and the monstrous mess – created a best-ever holiday memory for him.

No Heimlich maneuvers were needed that day, or thankfully, any other day.  Sue’s brand of mischief always bordered on danger, but the only real harm came in the form of deep belly laughs and tourniquet-like waistbands.

Vicki 🥰

P.S.  You need a side dish for this post.  Really you do…and I’ve got one for you.  A story about mashed potatoes…waiting for you on Heart of the Matter.  A little reminder to preserve sanity however you can during this busy time of year.

  2. Oh, my goodness. There’s so much to laugh about here. That WKRP Thanksgiving episode will go down in history. I loved that show, although I always wondered how they ran a radio station with so few people. LOL

As for the food fight, that was one of the parts of “Surviving Sue” that made me laugh out loud. I’m sure poor Michael didn’t know what hit him…literally.

    1. Hey now…you’re making ME laugh out loud, Michelle! You just described the exact look on Michael’s face that year. Flying turkey legs at the table. He was stunned for a second and then joined in giggling like a toddler. Thank you so much for sharing that you loved that story, too. And WKRP? Agree! They didn’t work much, did they? xo! 🤣

      1. I think watching that show as a teenager was why I considered pursuing a career in broadcasting for a while. They made it look fun.

        1. Oh….I could see and hear that…you have such a beautiful voice. Michelle as a broadcaster? Yes! And they did make it look fun…which perhaps is a reminder that hard work and levity CAN go together. Balancing acts! 🤣🥰🤣

  5. We’ll have to agree to disagree over Johnny Carson vs David Letterman, Vicki! Now, if only Johnny Carson could appear with Stephen Colbert … who knows, Colbert just might be able to make Johnny materialize!! 😂🤣

    1. Oh….wouldn’t THAT be wonderful! Truth be told, I have a soft spot for Carson because my dad loved him so.

  6. The WKRP Thanksgiving episode is the best Thanksgiving show ever. I liked Letterman’s sense of humor too. Carson never made me laugh the way Dave did + when he had his mother go to the Olympics… pure entertainment. She was a hoot.

    1. Oh my goodness! Yes! I forgot about the Olympics silliness with his mom. Thanks for the reminder, Ally! 🤣 And WKRP forever, right?!? 🥰

      1. I have to say YES to WKRP… living where I do, even if the show mocked this area, it did so truthfully. I smile just thinking about some episodes.

        1. You’re so right. After a while, the mocking and lampooning becomes endearing. I’d never trade Midwest goodness and goofiness for anything else. I think I need to talk the hubs into helping me search for episodes on demand. Just because. xo, Ally! 🥰

  7. Oh how I loved those top ten lists. But, I have to side with your dad, Johnny was an icon and never quite matched. Nor does it sound like your Day of the Flying Drumsticks was ever quite matched!

    1. Ohhh….fine. Yes, Johnny was pretty fab. I’ll give you that but only because you made me laugh out loud with the best title for that turkey day mess – “Day of the Flying Drumsticks”! Oh yah! 🥰🤪🥰

      1. Yeah, I’m pretty good when it comes to titles. It’s the stuff that comes after them that I often struggle with. Please feel free to use that one as you like. Royalty payments may be submitted electronically 🤓

        1. Chuckling and snorting as I sip my coffee — dangerous – and your fault! Sure, sure. You can be the ‘title king’. But truthfully you’re way off base. Your titles are great…your content’s even better. So there! 😜

  9. Sue was such an enigma. Upright and dependable at times, and then then a roaring tornado at others. This is just one more example of the letter, isn’t it? What a life you lived with Sue…

I, unfortunately, haven’t seen Letterman. I might need to try to pull this episode up to check it out!

You’ve captured her essence! And yes…I forget…generationally I’m way ahead of you. Letterman is a historic reference at this point – LOL! 🥰🤣🥰

  18. Okay, throwing a turkey leg is one thing — but gravy? That’s like liquid gold! A good gravy can save a whole meal, even if the turkey is dry, the potatoes are lumpy, and the stuffing is awful.

Also, I agree with you on the Letterman/Carson controversy- and thanks for the heads up about him being on Colbert🤩

    1. Yay! For our mutual love of silly WKRP! And Letterman…and your mom! I love that she read the book…and I’m hoping she didn’t reach out to you about the food fight because it reminded her of crazy in your family! You’ll need to tell me more…LOL! And tell your mom I said hi! 🥰

      1. My mom is sort of a clean freak. 😁 The idea of a food fight in her house with stuff splattered everywhere would be one of the worst possible situation’s imaginable to her 😁 she was very hyper about anything related to house decorations, and cleanliness until our daughters were born. Then a lot of that went out the window.😁 So I tease her all the time about the stuff that my kids can do in her house that I would have been in big trouble for😁

  22. Huge Letterman fan here. In 1997, we were visiting family in New Jersey, and I scored tickets to The Late Show. Made a day trip to NYC and had the time of my life! His guests that day were John Lithgow, one of the mid-90s supermodels (Christy Turlington? I don’t remember exactly), and Foo Fighters. It was a great experience I will never forget! Long live Dave and his Top 10 lists!

Aside from your epic food fights I feel as if our lives are synoptic in some ways, including late night television, huge turkey dinners, relatives and friends docked around the table and always epic humor bubbling up as if champagne. Loved the post. Hugs, C
