My Wish for 2024: Be True to You

On January 1, 2023 I wrote a post quoting Dostoevsky of all things.  I shared 490 words about being silly and putting a premium on being myself.  Goofy due to sleep deprivation?  Sometimes.  Goofy because it’s my natural state?  Quick to laugh whenever I can – especially at myself?  Definitely.

That beginning-of-the-year ramble inspired my “Crack Yourself Up” posts – a series of fifteen goofy glimpses over the year – which were always well-received because I found good company in dear readers – like you, perhaps – who like to laugh. 😉

Yep. Any opportunity to gaze upon the lighter side of life – even at our own expense – can be a welcome respite from the heaviness each day can bring.  Heaviness and heartache from within or the challenging frustrations when we look at the world at large.

Whether the focus is the inhumanity and horrors toward one another around the globe or the disregard and disdain for the environment, we seem to be surrounded by looming tragedies that only increase as we turn away, rather than toward the truth.  Forgiveness in advance? This is where I get a little preachy, a little ‘should-ly’.  The care and keeping of one another and our delicate, Earthly homebase shouldn’t be in competition for any other priorities, and yet…

Each person must find his or her own way.  I have no antidotes or wisdom other than the confession that I will continue to use humor – especially the self-deprecating sort – into 2024 to provide relief.  Laughter = lightness, manifesting like a buoy to bolster my spirit.

I get it; my quirkiness might change nothing about the world or shelter people I love (and those I’ll never meet) from harm, but it reminds me to be true to my nature as I do what I can to take on challenges near and far. My micro influence joins forces with other like-minded folks. They’re out there. They’re you.  Reminding me that my wantonly optimistic and rose-tinged belief in goodness and love is true.

Channeling a little Dostoevsky just as I did nearly a year ago, I say follow your heart even if you are the embodiment of nonsense to onlookers and naysayers:

“Talk nonsense, but talk your own nonsense, and I’ll kiss you for it.  To go wrong in your own way is better than to go right in someone else’s.”

-F. Dostoevsky

And this!  It might seem a little incongruous, but every time I reflect upon that brilliant gem from Dostoevsky, I summon a soundtrack in my head.  This 70’s girl can’t help herself…. the brilliant Russian ushers in favorite Fleetwood Mac lyrics from “Dreams”. Thank you, Stevie Nicks:

Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It’s only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound

-Fleetwood Mac, “Dreams”, Stevie Nicks

Happy New Year…with love and encouragement to be true…to you.

Vicki ❤❤❤

  1. Oh but Vicki, your quirkiness does change the world. Every outside influence acts upon the moment and makes it different from if it were not there. (Me, 2023) Thank you from the bottom of all my changed moments.

  3. There is a particular energy that everyone carries or expresses in this life, and I’m with Michael, “your quirkiness does change the world,” because it’s a better place with you in it. So deliciously happy to have discovered your unique voice this year Vicki. Here’s to more of “you” in 2024! Hugs, C

  4. Oh, I get it, quirkiness might not change the world. I just know that any post that includes Dostoevsky and Stevie Nicks sure does sound like a winner to me. They and you have a wonderful message. We can only be ourselves. Best to go all in. I can’t say it any better than what you wrote: “I say follow your heart even if you are the embodiment of nonsense to onlookers and naysayers.” Looking forward to more quirkiness in 2024.

  8. I am glad you stuck with Dostoevsky after all. I’d only say that in a looney world there is too much room for people going with their feelings, thus justifying both hiding under the rug or doing harm. But I also know you didn’t say this. Happy New Year, Vicki!

I’m all about this. Being ourselves and embracing laughter, especially at our own expense, is a very likable quality. I have to shake my head recalling Backwards Day at school and wearing my tidy whities over my pants. It’s one thing to do that at school when people know you’re crazy, but then I went to the bank after work. You can imagine how people pretended not to be watching as they thought, “That poor man. I sure hope someone helps get him home safely.”🤣🤣🤣

          Not a problem.

It was just something that I came up with, but wasn’t sure how I would put it, and decided to go with it.

  11. I love your quirky, self-deprecating self. It’s definitely a major part of your charm—not to mention all the REST of you that is so charming! I think that many folks misunderstand self-deprecation. I’m have been accused of ‘putting myself down’ but methinks those who see it that way are missing the point. We are willingly displaying vulnerability by sharing our bare-naked selves in a way that others can relate to—and I believe it can be a healing process for others to know that they are not alone in their quirkiness. I think of as a form of service! So right on girlfriend! Keep the quirky coming! 👏

    1. Oh, Julia. You get me…you SO get me. Yep, it’s about dropping the facade and being brave — not busting our own egos. Adore you for your humor and ability to see the lightness. It is where the healing occurs…the coming together… even when outcomes are uncertain. Love you! 🥰❤️🥰

  12. I love to laugh and spent every morning laughing at something on youtube, sometimes even clips I know already. I need it for my inner balance. The world is not in great shape and the coming year scares me. So much is at stake, yet so many don’t seem to care. Laughter means being carefree, and it feels a bit like self-medicating. If I laugh, I can’t cry. 🙂
We can’t be quirky enough, don’t you think?

  15. Happy New Year Victoria!! Smiles, laughter and kind words go a long way in making a difference in the lives of those around us. Positive thoughts far outweigh the negative and negative people are a big turn off for me. I’m weeding out those people in my life though I have turned up a smile when around them to try to brighten their day and mine. Much praise for you and your blog!!!
