When You Crack Yourself Up: Shake & Bake

Our kitchen remodel was close to a yearlong process, and I can’t believe – looking back to a year ago at this time – I was staring down the removal of our oven as we ‘roughed it’ with a makeshift kitchen (mostly in the basement and in our laundry room) for months and months.  It’s a testament to my dear friend Jen and her amazing team that we can look back on that time period without any major heartaches or hard feelings.  Jen and company were great – especially as we stretched the process out with add-ons…oh, let’s do the bathroom AND the laundry room, too. Scope creep…but we survived!

What’s on my mind this morning isn’t gratitude for our home and our new kitchen; waves of gratitude DO hit me on a daily basis because I love tinkering with recipes and making food, baking especially.  After many months of sidelining that part of myself, holiday time this year brought out my inner baker and then some.

Maybe I was more of a whiner than I recall (likely) but one of the best gifts of Christmas this year came 2×2.  Hello, Noah.

Dear Jen and daughter Delaney knew I was happy to be back at it with baking and noodling in the kitchen and both gifted me with the same yummy olive oil goodies – cake mixes and delicious Greek olive oils.  Did they compare notes?  Not a bit.  The joyousness comes from the fact that they KNOW me.  Two of my favorite women in the world who picked up references (that I recall as minor) about longing to make a good olive oil cake as soon as the kitchen was done.

With greater (and mostly) lesser success, I’ve tinkered with recipes for years trying to get the just-right citrus-y flavors with a little almond and vanilla while balancing the amount of olive oil used.  This is a baking category where measuring is essential, but recipes can be so mercurial, especially when olive oil is involved.  Just enough and there’s a heavenly crumb – moist and delicate.  A soupcon too much? You’ve got an oil slick that begs for a slice of crusty bread to mop it up.

Imagine my delight when I opened holiday gifts containing nearly identical treats – yummy ingredients to get back at it, experimenting with olive oil cakes.  This time I’ve got a head start with boxed mixes.  Who knew!?! One vanilla and one citrus.  Today?  I made the citrus cake and the house smells deliciously fragrant and fresh.

You might be wondering about the title of this post. Where’s the giggle? I’m getting to it!  I couldn’t find a timer to save my soul this morning, so I used the clock/timer on my phone, forgetting that I last used it in a workshop with young-uns…twenty-somethings who enjoyed my lively and loud ringtone selection. I’d forgotten all about it until the clock ticked down this morning and scared the daylights out of me when it went off.

If you’ve never heard the Jessie J song, “Price Tag” give it a listen.  I can’t say whether the joy of Jen and Delaney’s gifts, the smells in the house, or the hilarity of me being startled – and then propelled into dance mode thanks to Jessie – was the best part of the day so far.  Methinks it was the combo and the reminder to “make the world dance” from the lyrics. Works for me. Groove on…giggle on. Shake AND bake.

  1. Sweet! Mr. None of the Above got me a brand new Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas this year. The one I had was making lots of funny, loud noises as I used it to make Christmas cookies, and the knob that covered the lever (?) to adjust the speed had fallen off long ago. I suppose that happens when you use a mixer for 20 some years that had been used by Mr’s grandma for probably 20 some years before that! Happy baking, Vicki!

    1. I know, right? Such an extra treat knowing that they were both paying attention to something so minor – all things considered. A reminder that thoughtfulness is a virtue. xo, Erin! 🥰

  3. Thanks for lightening my day with laughter and dancing a kitchen jig to the never-before heard “Price Tag” before. And I’d love to try a piece of that cake! I can smell it all the way out here on the East coast! YUM! Happy New Year and happy New Kitchen!

    1. Oh…if only I had a little video clip of Jules dancing to Jessie J. I’m grateful there’s no video evidence of ME dancing in my flour-strewn jammies this morning. Stuff that folks should shield their eyes from. But you? I imagine you as all grace and goodness…you groovy girl. Love you, Jules! 😎🥰😎

      1. Did you ever see the hilarious episode of Seinfeld where Elaine danced much to the horror of observers? Just call me Elaine! I’m afraid that even flour-covered jammies wouldn’t be enough to hide the embarrassment! 🤪

        1. Well, now. Thank you for the visual — Elaine/Julia. Yep! I’ve got it locked in my brain now — LOL! I can’t say I’m much better but dancing is about joy, is it not? Not the cool moves (said the gal who also dances like Elaine). xo! 🥰🥰🥰

  4. Can’t imagine a kitchen renovation that takes a year. We had ours done and it took about 7 weeks, which felt manageable. Don’t know how you did it, but now the reward is sweeter isn’t it.
One of the first things I did was bake too. The music, a crackling fireplace and a delicious bread in the oven definitely suited the cozy mood. Next, an olive oil cake. You’re giving me ideas!
And how lovely to have friends that know you so well. “It’s not about the money, money, money.”
It’s about the friendship, baking and dancing, in your new kitchen! Enjoy!!!

    1. You are amazing…you pulled all the threads that mattered most to me…in my post…in one beautiful reply. Yes…it was a long remodeling slog but we kept adding extra elements into the mix, so we kinda did it to ourselves. Thank you for loving the lyric in the song…and YES! Friendship, baking, dancing. What else is there? Love to you! 🥰

    1. Yes….I’m trying to figure out how to get a slice to Maryland for Julia. If I can do that, surely I can get a slice to Seattle! Thanks for giggling with me. 🥰

  6. My six-year-old granddaughter Kate was fascinated with my chicken-shaped timer. Her BD is in March so I just ordered one for her, but in a cat shape. I hope her parents don’t mind. Hey, could be worse!

    1. Love that — I need to treat myself to a new timer…of all the things that have disappeared in the kitchen remodel I wasn’t expecting my stash of timers to go missing! Too funny. I’ll need to look for a chicken/kitchen timer. Sounds fun…or a kitty cat! I bet Kate is an absolute doll. xo, Joy! 🥰🥰🥰

    1. Oh….ya know what? Isn’t ‘shake and bake’ a reference to a play in football? Some reverse something or other? Maybe I did that to you…making you expect some cool sportsy post and I double-crossed you with baking and dancing drivel! LOL! 🥰

    1. LOL…that’s probably about my speed these days. Kids baking shows! I haven’t watched many but when Lisa’s here with us, she LOVES them. I’m more of a Great British Baking Show fan but maybe you’re on to something…the kids are more fun! 🥰

  9. We’ve been kicking around the idea of making an olive oil cake for awhile now. Heard a lot of good things about them. This post might be an omen. If we do so, we’ll make sure the “dance floor” is cleared away in case “Price Tag” comes on the radio. The first time I heard that song was in the film, “Pitch Perfect.” Anna Kendrick led an acapella medley which included that tune. Definitely get-up-and-dance music!

    1. Ohhhh….Bruce! You just did your community service for the week! I could NOT for the life of me remember the movie “Price Tag” was in! Yay! Get up and dance music, for sure. Thank you, friend. And do let me know how the olive oil cake adventure works out for you. I expect to see photos and all the details…with or without a dance soundtrack. 🥰

  11. Ooh, Vicki,
I bet your kitchen did smell yummy after your shakin’ and bakin’! Did you save a slice for me? Actually, my daughter is making dinner tonight. She’s making something we’ve never had before called “Butter chicken.” Whenever she cooks, it’s usually amazing. As I sit here and type this, I definitely smell garlic (I love the smell of garlic.) So, it’s bound to be delicious! Also, that’s an amazing island, backsplash and hood! Did you go gas or convection for your range top? Mona

    1. Hey Mona! Yum! Butter chicken is delish…if we’re thinking of the same thing! You’ll need to fill me in …a tasty Indian dish in a savory tomato sauce? MMM….and boy, you’ve got good eyes! Yep – we are so grateful for our big new island and oven and we did do gas. Hubster is more particular about that than I am and when we turn on the big hood/vent I think we suck all the air out of the house. LOL! As for the slice of olive oil cake? It’s on its way…if only we could trade snacks virtually, eh? Big hugs…and enjoy your dinner! 🥰🥰🥰

Haha! This is a great story. I am familiar with the song but hadn’t really listened to the lyrics before. I’m just going out on a limb here, but I’ve got to bet it’s the only song in the world that starts with the lyrics, “Okay, Coconut Man, Moonhead, and Pea.”

Your fans are looking for visual proof of your dancing. Why don’t you suggest to Wynne that you add dancing to your podcasts? 🤣

  15. “Why is everyone so serious?” Boy isn’t that a question I’d like answered. Your story reminds me of being a teenager and walking into the kitchen to find my mother dancing to James Taylor while mixing banana bread. I was in shock she could be so silly and made me respect her more.
