You know that old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? I can’t help myself sometimes. I done did it.
When David Brooks’ new book, “How to Know a Person” was published, I put it on my TBR (to be read) list immediately. And then I bumped it up a bit, not because I wanted to slight other terrific books in the line-up but because of the sub-title. Are you ready? Here it is:
The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen
I hate to say it… but drop the mic. Done and done.
I’ve been a fan of David Brooks for years and had the privilege of being near, listening to him deliver a terrific commencement address once upon a time. He’s unassuming, deliberate, disarming and wise. Bar none, my favorite graduation speaker EVER.
Recently, I casually mentioned to my dear friend and collaborator, Wynne Leon that Brooks had written a new book. Ever-so-Wynne-like in reply, Wynne simply said:
“Oh , yes! I just attended an event where he spoke, and I got an autographed copy of his new book.”
Whoa and wow!
As you might imagine…Wynne and I have been reading and discussing Brooks’ latest ever since. We appreciate his over-arching message about the power of being seen…being deeply seen…as he breaks down some of the how-to’s. David Brooks style.
Check out the video snippet below…a little sharing about one of Brooks’ most compelling anecdotes told in that beloved commencement speech. Then…please give the whole episode a listen.
How to know a person? Wynne knows. Inspirational books are great…but it’s also wonderful to have friends to swap stories with.
