Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes…

Changes. Being the new guy…I think it’s a tough role and it’s one I played over and over again as a child – moving a lot because of my dad’s job.

When Wynne and I chatted with the wonderful Mark Petruska in this week’s podcast, I remembered there’s joy to be found when we step into new territory. Mark’s openness to try…to explore… is an eyes-wide open attitude I’d like to bottle and sell.

Curiosity, authenticity and enthusiasm can go a long way when you’re unsure of yourself. That dreaded oof feeling – not knowing if you’re making a good impression…wondering if you’ll be liked…can put a damper on good intentions.

Ch-ch-ch-changes can conjure insecurity…

I tend to go overboard if I’m staring down too much “new” at once. I slip into overdrive; my irksome personality setting which resembles a babble-a-thon.

Not Mark. He shares his insight about embracing new surroundings, new colleagues, while keeping the natural fears about new systems, protocols and procedures in check.

You’ll love learning from Mark and you might become more enthusiastic about ch-ch-ch-changes as a result. Inspiration from Mark and David Bowie – both? A great combo, I say. Or as Mark said,

“Find your passion and don’t settle.”

Vicki 😉

I have never attended a babble-a-thon, though I am pretty sure it is discussed in the bible. I’m know you would do a fine tour of the Tower. I am looking forward to the pictures, Vicki!

  2. I love being the new guy. We moved about 10 times when I was a child, and while at the time I hated it, looking back, it gave me a great ability to be the new guy.

    1. Same, Rachel! Same! Although I hated it at the time, looking back, I can see that learning to be nimble in new surroundings – quickly – was a terrific opportunity to understand people. Thanks so much for that – sounds like we have something in common! 🥰

  6. Always awkward to be the new person but only way to get over it is to jump right in with both feet as mark did. Splash off the high dive!

  7. You had a lot of moves as a child. We never moved in my childhood except from a small tract home to one my parents hired an architect to create their dream home. Then as an adult I was in Palm Springs until recently. I finally got to be the new kid at 60!

    1. Oh….Palm Springs…be still my heart. You’ve lived in some beautiful places! 🥰

      1. I loved Palm Springs, but it has changed throughout the decades. My dream home was always old Spanish. In 1992, pre kids, we bought our 1930s Spanish Colonial home within walking distance to restaurants, shops and a mountain view. My husband drove the move to Arizona. It took me a year to realize we made the right choice. But this week, I am truly grateful that we live in such a peaceful, beautiful place. I think my husband appreciated me telling him that — you think?

  8. Being the new kid on the block, whether in school, work or community, is hard. I’m with you on the babble-a-thon as it’s my coping nerves. 😆 I agree that being open and curious go a long way in establishing new roots.
