Bringing the Light

Dr. Stein posted a thought-provoking essay today about friendship. I highly recommend it! I love learning new things from him and in this piece, he offers insight about the nature of friendships, the nuances and varieties.

There’s so much to worry about in the world at the moment but the one thing that sustains me when I’m overwhelmed (especially by media… inconsideration, insults, danger, misdeeds and an oppressive lack of compassion) is friendship.

This morning, I felt a familiar urge – a desire to pull away. Cocoon. Until I stood at the sink, washing my hands and allowed the cool water and the aroma of decadent, fresh-smelling suds to soothe me.

I sipped my coffee and looked around my home, my eyes resting on a sweet vase with hydrangeas fresh from our garden (see pic above).

I smiled to myself, remembering my hunt yesterday as I searched for a petite vase that would be ‘just right’ and realized an oil cruet from my dear friend Jen was perfectly proportioned for the job. I love its shape and when I added a couple of stems of fresh cut blooms, it ushered in a sense of calm.

I can’t change the world, but I can recognize my good fortune. My remarkable friends who bring the light and remind me that goodness is near. Kindness and friendship still count.

Just for fun…a favorite post about friendship: Friendship…is Everything – Victoria Ponders. Based on a story about haircutting mishaps…giggle-worthy. I promise. 😉

  3. Friendships ground us and get us through the hard lows and are the best to celebrate our highs with. There is so much going on in the world indeed, such as yesterday!, and thank goodness for the friendships in our lives.

True friends are there for each other and remain non-judgmental yet are willing to provide honest and real talk. One consistent human quality, this is specially true in grounded friendships, no one likes to be taken for granted. Dr. Stein wrote eloquently about this subject, and I enjoyed reading his thoughts.

  14. Good friendships really do affect our lives and our perspective. There are so many young people these days that don’t have good friends. That sense of connection is missing in our society, for them. It’s multi-factored and a huge topic of course. It will be interesting to see the evolution of these relationships in the next decades. And thus the evolution of society.
Thanks for this lovely post Vicki. Thank you for the light and beauty you bring to the world. 💕

    1. I couldn’t agree more, Alegria. Just as you said, there are many layers to the concern, but the pain points are obvious for so many…the challenge of finding and making friends, forging connections and maintaining them. I appreciate all that you do as you bring the light! 🥰

  16. Kindness and friendship still count. I like that idea, knowing that most of the news lately suggests otherwise, but that there are still a few people who haven’t lost their hearts to the insanity around us.

  19. Finding that perfect vase really is so satisfying, isn’t it? Just recently, maybe today(?), I had one of those moments of some small thing bringing a little joy and a “it’s nice to be alive” moment. Strange I can’t remember what it was now, but it sure was nice while it lasted. I remember the feeling, even if I can’t remember what caused it, and that’s better memory anyway. 🙂
