Write On!

The other day a dear friend – a fellow writer asked, “How’s it going?” I immediately knew the ‘it’ she spoke of.

We’ve become something akin to accountability partners, checking in about our projects.  Me? I periodically blog here on WP about my writing adventures, sometimes posting on FB, IG and LI, too.

My friend? She thinks social media is the runway to hell. Or it is hell. Depends on the day and her mood. I love her reclusive tendencies, her ability to burrow as a self-care strategy, when needed. It’s a long story, but she learned the hard way about social media backlashes and adult bullying. It’s a thing and it makes me sad…

So we communicate old-school style. Phone calls, emails and every now and then, she’ll text me a booster shot of encouragement or a silly meme.

Sometimes her messages are pleas for help. Like the rough ride she experienced yesterday…professing that she’d literally written herself into a corner which caused her to question an entire storyline for a main character. Whoa no. I feel that. In fact, it’s quite possible that I’ve already done the same…or I’m in the process of doing so.

But my friend? Her best quality is her sense of humor. She sent me this quote, attributed to George Orwell:

Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.

-George Orwell

Writer friends, I salute you! If you, too, are driven by a compulsion to write…a temptation you might not understand but cannot resist…you’re not alone.

Write on!

Vicki 😊

  1. The compulsion is there. And I need to sequester myself more often for its benefit. Because you know, social media, the highway to hell has too many on ramps. 😆
I’m very much looking forward to reading your next book. As you know, I love your previous one! 💕

    1. You’re making me smile…the predominant conversation with friends this week has been ‘choose wisely’…there are so many on ramps to crazy town. Yes! Thanks for being a dear one…and for offering the word ‘sequester’. It’s perfect for the mood required…the space/time/vibe…to write. xo! 🥰

  2. Great post. My early on writing mentor Gerry Petievich said writers need to have “buns of steel.” I’m sorry to hear about the social media bullying. Sheesh!

    1. Buns of steel! I love it! And yes…sheesh indeed…the bad behavior was ridiculous! Hugs to you. 🥰

  7. Victoria, I can’t believe I found your story just as I’m finishing up lunch. I’ve been procrastinating heading to my computer because I was afraid I wrote my MC into a corner yesterday! Now you’ve lightened my spirit just as Wynne did with her story about Coppola’s wife. I love you both! I’ll find a way out of that corner. One of the best parts of writing is truly the writers I keep meeting along the way. Sending a huge hug along with my gratitude. ❤️

    1. You’re making me smile! A BIG smile, Deb! I love it when we can exchange these bits of honesty and frailty about writing. It’s hard – no doubt – and we owe YOU for keeping our inspiration stoked. We receive, we return the favor. It’s the best! Thank you so much…now…Write On…my friend. Your MC’s waiting for you! 🥰😊🥰

  9. you are definitely part of that daring breed, who do the work and suffer the slings and arrows that go with writing a book. I look up to anyone who endures this process and comes out with a book in the end, it’s a ton of work and I’m sure it can take a lot out of a person. bravo to you and all of the other writers out there, who take it to fruition. p.s. I agree, a sense of humor is important, in this, as well as most challenges in life.

    1. I’m smiling…about your delightful ‘daring breed’ comment. Daring…or clueless? 🤣 Hmmm…but I’m with you all the way, Beth, about remembering our sense of humor and sharing it with each other. You said it! Helps with most challenges in life. I believe it! Hugs to you! 🥰🥰🥰

That your friend has felt the toxicity of the social media world is a shame. Recent and distant history suggest that she might know more than some of those who whistle a happy tune. Our children are among its victims. As you say, Vicki, sad.

Though I appreciate the convenience of texting and the wonders of video technology, there’s nothing quite like the personal contact of an unexpected letter. I’m not much of a social media person other than a few minutes on Facebook most days. The most genuine and kind people are bloggers, so that’s where I spend the majority of my time. My theory on that is people who truly want to engage want more than just a photo to respond to.

  13. Great post, Vicki. I’m still a baby writer, so thank you for the message. I’m still doing more reading than writing, but I’ll get there. Bullying through social media is just ridiculous, and they are only demonstrating their own insecurities.
