The other day a dear friend – a fellow writer asked, “How’s it going?” I immediately knew the ‘it’ she spoke of.
We’ve become something akin to accountability partners, checking in about our projects. Me? I periodically blog here on WP about my writing adventures, sometimes posting on FB, IG and LI, too.
My friend? She thinks social media is the runway to hell. Or it is hell. Depends on the day and her mood. I love her reclusive tendencies, her ability to burrow as a self-care strategy, when needed. It’s a long story, but she learned the hard way about social media backlashes and adult bullying. It’s a thing and it makes me sad…
So we communicate old-school style. Phone calls, emails and every now and then, she’ll text me a booster shot of encouragement or a silly meme.
Sometimes her messages are pleas for help. Like the rough ride she experienced yesterday…professing that she’d literally written herself into a corner which caused her to question an entire storyline for a main character. Whoa no. I feel that. In fact, it’s quite possible that I’ve already done the same…or I’m in the process of doing so.
But my friend? Her best quality is her sense of humor. She sent me this quote, attributed to George Orwell:
Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.
-George Orwell
Writer friends, I salute you! If you, too, are driven by a compulsion to write…a temptation you might not understand but cannot resist…you’re not alone.
Write on!
Vicki 😊
