Backyard Buddies

I know, I know. The deer are a menace. We have several neighbors and friends who decry the horrors of deer this time of year because of their infernal appetites. The nerve, the nerve. I get it…but I figure our landscaping effort, in the end, is for our visual enjoyment. It’s not our source of food and anyone who knows me knows I was born to feed people… animals. It gives me great joy.

Our daughter’s favorite way of ridiculing me (still) is reminding me that when she had friends over when she was growing up my routine was the same:

“Hi, how are you?” (big hug)…Followed by…”What can I get you to eat?” Followed by a restaurant-like run-down of the menu du jour…what’s on the stove, in the fridge, what I could whip up…with a feverish focus on comfort foods…pastas and sweets, especially. Alllll the carbs.

I can’t help myself. When I see our furry friends noshing through the hostas, hydrangeas and more, I’m the weirdo who smiles and figures, “we’ll plant more next year“.

The garden got a reprieve earlier this summer when the cherry tree did its job, offering luscious fruit and now the apple tree is revealing its treasures. A little green and less-than-ripe, but if you’re a hungry deer…whether you’re a newly minted buck or a mama with a rambunctious little one…apples in any state of ripeness seem to work. What the deer don’t eat, the bunnies and squirrels enjoy as they nosh on the leftovers that fall from the tree…or from the chompers of the sloppy-eating deer.

We love watching our friends roll out of the field adjacent to our house and we’re grateful they’ve got a comfy little lair. In the early morning, the deer are hard to detect, moving slowly, purposefully as they glance toward the deck and wonder if ‘those humans’ are awake. When we are, we’re admittedly a bit agog, still, after many years of enjoying one generation after another parade past us.

Hubby Paul is only moderately amused by my naming compulsion…the buck is Ferdinand and when I talk to ‘Ferdie’ I swear he listens. Or mocks me. I can’t tell because his face is pretty stoic, TBH.

Mom and baby? I don’t know what to call them. They move so swiftly, perhaps out of necessity to avoid predators (including humans). They haven’t given me enough of a straight-on look for me to contemplate their faces, wonder what to call them.

And so…good day to you…as I share a morning epiphany: I have officially turned the corner into the comfort of not caring what others think as I talk to the wildlife. They don’t seem to mind because they return, day after day, and put up with my gawking…and smiling.

Vicki 😊

  1. I’m with you, Vicki. I love seeing wildlife around our house, even though I realize damage can come along with their visits. Aside from being a pleasure to watch, they’re a reminder that nature is all around us … and we’re just a small part of it. Enjoy! 😊💕

    1. Ah….YES! Thank you, Jane. You said that so well…capturing the nuance about the benefit they bring by giving me a perspective that’s positive. xo to you, my friend! 🥰

  2. What is better than deer to charm your morning. Who are these complainers?!

    1. LOL…those who disdain the deer…LOL (again)…are far better landscapers and gardeners than I will ever be…so I suspect it’s extra daunting to see deer destroying their hard work…but thank you for the grin this morning, VJ! 🥰

  3. Such a sweet post Vicki! I find it just as enjoyable as you to provide a smorgasbord of items for the animals. My friends have more basic, non-binary names given that I really can’t tell male from female with my visitors! The squirrels are all named Squirrel-ly, except for the young ones who are Short Tails. My wild bunnies are (thanks to Wynne’s Mr. D) simply called Bun-Bun. I am not up late enough to watch for the nocturnal visitors but the leftovers are usually gone in the morning.

      1. It seemed appropriate Wynne. These bunnies are very comfortable sticking around even when I’m outside gardening. Sort of the same way Bun Bun sticks close to Mr. D for those special moments 🙂

        1. That’s so cool, Deb. And when you want to keep track of them, you can put an AirTag on them just like D’s BunBun. 🙂

  4. Beautiful deer, Vicki! I love that you can appreciate and share your yard with these lovely creatures. Gardens are made to be enjoyed by all!

Just don’t name the baby deer Bambi and you’ll all be fine!

I love our wildlife as well and chat with them. I try to tell them what they can eat in our yard, but they seem to be choosy. The deer especially loved my red lilies. The rabbits have moved onto the clover in the neighbor’s yard and not my zinnias anymore. We do leave water out for the rabbits. I love the wildlife, but I do attempt to make sure they try other things in other people’s yards as well. 😄😁
Oh, and squirrels and bluejays get peanuts. Even though the squirrels try to get into the garage to sleep for the winter. I guess we all just love to get along… 😁😁

Living in a top floor flat in the city, I’m also so happy of the opportunity to share in your morning views … I dont think I’d want to move and get on with the day when you have such captivating scenes in your garden. Your garden also looks huge 😍

I have to ask, did you happen to name Ferdinand after the bull in the children’s book, The Story of Ferdinand? That was one of my favorite books as a little one.

  9. Ferdinand was my mom’s favorite childhood book. I still have her copy of it. I love your deer photo. We have deer who walk down the wash behind our house. They like to munch on our jojoba.

    1. Maybe you were the friend who mentioned Ferdinand…the beloved book character last week? I can’t remember who brought it up and it made me smile SO BIG because of the randomness with our deer friend Ferdie. I love that you’ve got a copy of the book that was your mom’s…so precious. And oh boy…I bet the jojoba is yummy and refreshing! 🥰

    1. Deer talk! I love it. Paul thinks I’m nuts, but I’ve been sharing a Honeycrisp apple with Ferdie in the afternoons…I eat half and toss the other half to him and he just watches and waits until it’s his turn. Ridiculous, I know…but he doesn’t seem to mind my chit chat! 🥰😜🥰

  11. Anyone who would tsk tsk you talking to the Ferdinand and company reminds me of Dicken’s Ebenezer Scrooge and we all know how that worked out for Scrooge. Bah humbug to them. Yes, deer have healthy appetites, but you gotta love what the peace and composure they bring. And as far as naming them, Ferdinand sounds like a cool name to me — especially a cool buck always on the lookout for bigger prey. They’re stoic face is kind of crazy. Funny how they don’t let their guards down. Ha, ha.

    1. Thanks, Brian! I love your comparison to Scrooge! LOL! I’ll be sure to give Ferd a manly nod from you! 🥰😎🥰

Many things in life depend on what we do for others, including the birds, the bees, the monarch butterflies, the deer, and humans of different appearance thought, religion, and need. Bless you, Vicki.

  14. I love this, Vicki! So, when I was in Pittsburgh, someone was telling me that they have a deer problem, that they’re “an invasive species,” and the state is thinking about bringing in animals to eat them 😳 to which, I was mortified and replied, I think human beings are the invasive species!

Anywho, I’m glad to see and read this.

  16. I love this Vicki! You name your deer like I name flowers and trees. And I too love the animals we get around here. The bunnies have decimated my basil after living in my herb pot. And the birds got all the cherries this year as they do most years. There’ll be more next year and I’ll just plant more basil. What’s even more fun is watching them, you’re right, brings much joy. Great pics!

  18. Great pics! I agree- let the deer eat! Once we planted a berry bearing bush of some sort in the yard- might have been blackberry? Anyway we planned to eat them ourselves but the birds were much quicker and vigilant and they ate all of them as they ripened. At first I was mad, but then realized that the berries were growing literally steps away from my kitchen – whereas that berry bush was the birds actual kitchen. 🙂

    1. I love that…yes! The berry bush WAS their kitchen. Thanks, Todd! 🥰

  19. Deer are beautiful, but I’m afraid I would be one of those neighbors declaring what a menace they are. 😂 I think we finally have our garden deer proofed! We had a fawn born in our side yard this year right outside my bedroom window, and it was so precious to watch the mama come and nurse it every day. 💕

  21. Giorgio I like and can understand conversing with, but Ferdinand… I see trouble more than companionship. Of course I’m probably biased against deer because we can’t have any daylilies here. They eat them all. I adore daylilies.
