Dreamy With a Purpose

The quiet in the morning speaks of promise and possibilities.

I know it sounds trite, but fresh starts put pep in my step. Daybreak has the power to upgrade my perspective.

Pointed wisdom from Rumi popped into my awareness yesterday as well-timed encouragement:

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.

I’ve written before about my potent dream states and on occasion, pockets of problem-solving arrive. Sometimes long-forgotten quotes that are oh-so-suitable… for a malaise I haven’t quite acknowledged.

Like the Rumi wisdom.

Or insight ushered in by my dad, long departed, with his voice narrating a nugget or two of advice. Like a coach on the sidelines of life.

Other times? I get images only. Like a silent slide show pointing me to promise.

Peace. Reconciliationwith myself.

Slow mornings are a privilege I relish. They don’t happen every day but when they arrive…the joyfulness I gain is unmatched by any other wellness activity. Taking the time to reflect on what’s top of mind when I wake – before I bolt out of bed. That’s step #1.

Step #2? It’s the topic of our latest Sharing the Heart of the Matter podcast which drops tomorrow. All about the power of taking time for tea. Wynne and I share common ground around the importance of listening to the voices within whenever possible, especially in the morning, over tea.

Rumi’s quote? I love the encouragement to greet dawn and listen closely. Daybreak might point you to what you need, tucked inside.

Secrets within.

Vicki 😉

  1. I’ve never thought about this before reading this post, Vicki, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never “bolted” out of bed. More like a “before I drag myself out of bed”, inner voices or no inner voices!! 😂🤣🥱😴

  4. I love how the darkness of the morning slowly capitulates to the light, as I slowly capitulate to the demands of the day, but not until the coffee is sipped and all those luscious morning thoughts are entertained. My favorite time of day…hugs, C

  5. I love those slow early mornings too Vicki. Just thinking about it makes me take a deep breath. It’s a great time to listen, really listen to those powerful thoughts. How blessed you are to receive them.
Rumi was right. And I’ve quoted him on that a few times.
Here’s an IG post from last March where I used the quote

    Great minds…

I look forward to your follow up post!

  6. We’re on the same wavelength again Vicki … I have a piece coming sometime over the next few weeks on the beauty of mornings. We’re on the same page. Ironically I consider myself more of a night owl but there’s something romantic and beautiful about an early morning. Well done.

    1. Love that…being on the same wavelength with you! I have two other pieces “in the hopper” that focus on light – in very different ways – and I didn’t know I was doing this (clumping and mulling) until I realized what I’d written recently for blogging purposes. I think it’s the time of year? Can’t wait to see what you’ve got coming up! 🥰

  7. YES to slow mornings! The days where I can work from home are great precisely because I can take my time with a relaxing cup of coffee instead of immediately rushing out the door and driving for 45 minutes. Or, even better, weekend mornings with nothing on the agenda other than records on the turntable.

  9. Oh I love the idea of a coach on the sidelines making those little corrections in the moment. You’re so lucky. I also enjoy the moment between awakening and getting up. Many of life’s rough spots get smoothed during that short time.

    1. Thank you for that, Todd. I bet you can relate! I have a musician friend who tells me he plays in order to fix the things that he didn’t know were broken — thoughts, feelings, worries. Appreciate you for connecting with that thought. xo! 🥰😎🥰

      1. I keep reminding myself that the reason I “retired” was to enjoy a slower pace. I suppose it’s not in my nature. 😂 Maybe I need to make intentional mornings one of my monthly goals for November.

  15. Hi Vicki, I absolutely love Rumi’s quote: “The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.” I feel most aware right before the sun rises to greet us. A new day full of possibilities. My husband and I are in a calming phase now that our kids are adults, living on their own. We wake up early, one of us makes the coffee, and then we enjoy it together while talking about the day or immersing ourselves into a good book. I might even do a little blogging. 🙂 It’s a simple routine, but for us, it’s a special time in our day for quiet that was never an option when the kids were younger. So, it goes to prove that there are perks to getting older. Thanks for this beautiful post! ❤️

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment, Lauren. Paul and I have two chairs in an odd little ‘bump out’ next to our kitchen and they’re easterly facing which means we often find ourselves sitting in our sunny spot far too long some days…greeting the morning slowly. It’s hard to get moving when the conversation’s good…or I’ve got a good book or two tempting me. Cheers to your phrase, “a calming phase” for this stage in life. I love that! Gratitude filled, for sure. Hugs, hugs, hugs! 🥰💕🥰

      1. I loved hearing about your two chairs, Vicki. Another special place for many precious moments to come. We’re not retired yet (about one more year to go), so we’re on a time schedule during the week, but it’s still more relaxed than years ago. Hugs to you too! 🤗🌷💞

  16. Slow mornings are a gift. For over 24 years, it felt like I was bolting out of bed to make it to my 6:00 a.m. formation for physical training with my Army units. Not anymore. Now, my mornings are usually super slow. 🙌🏼

  17. Gosh, I love that Rumi quote, Vicki. I want to hear those secrets and wise words. I’m not one who likes to linger in bed, I just have a need to start the day, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t think about my dreams over my morning coffee. And I do. Sometimes, they are still on my mind when I go to bed! Looking forward to the podcast. 🙂

  24. I am often half alert when I get up, and not the good dreamy kind that you experience, and so I agree that these early morning starts are such a gift. For me, it means the hubby and T are still in bed and I can sit in silence with my thoughts and if I’m lucky, it’s a beautiful day out and the sun slowly creeps into the dining and living rooms. Something magical and a gift in those moments.
