We were delighted and relieved to see this adorable twosome last week.
When we moved here, our neighbors told us the tiny glen in our backyard’s been a safe haven for generations of deer but every spring I find myself lurking and looking – anxiously awaiting the arrival of nature’s newest. I know the deer are irksome to those who have a knack for gardening. Voracious eaters…yep. True enough – but our yard offers a temptation just for them (and a few lucky bunnies who devour the discard pile on the ground).
Our cherry tree is doing its best to get ready.
The blossoms have fallen away to reveal a healthy bounty of fruit – coming soon. Here’s a favorite pic from the middle of July last year. I think we’ve got a few weeks to go before the fruit will fall…or be ripe for plucking.

We’re on the lookout for the father figure, but no signs of a proud buck yet. He was elusive last year. I captured only a couple of pics:

I’ll keep you posted about the arrival of any bucks. It’s a treat I relish. Somehow sensing the nearness of my long-departed father in their eyes.
Given our proximity to a busy four lane road, I’m forever saying little prayers for safe passage – for all the critters. Especially the stately and often fearless bucks. Mama and baby, too.
