Hello New Friends

We were delighted and relieved to see this adorable twosome last week.

When we moved here, our neighbors told us the tiny glen in our backyard’s been a safe haven for generations of deer but every spring I find myself lurking and looking – anxiously awaiting the arrival of nature’s newest. I know the deer are irksome to those who have a knack for gardening. Voracious eaters…yep. True enough – but our yard offers a temptation just for them (and a few lucky bunnies who devour the discard pile on the ground).

Our cherry tree is doing its best to get ready.

The blossoms have fallen away to reveal a healthy bounty of fruit – coming soon. Here’s a favorite pic from the middle of July last year. I think we’ve got a few weeks to go before the fruit will fall…or be ripe for plucking.

We’re on the lookout for the father figure, but no signs of a proud buck yet. He was elusive last year. I captured only a couple of pics:

I’ll keep you posted about the arrival of any bucks. It’s a treat I relish. Somehow sensing the nearness of my long-departed father in their eyes.

Given our proximity to a busy four lane road, I’m forever saying little prayers for safe passage – for all the critters. Especially the stately and often fearless bucks. Mama and baby, too.

  1. oh, so precious! and give them my hellos as well, keep us posted – you are so lucky to have these sweet neighbors. I feel like deer are my sprit animals for some reason, I always have. one of my daughters had a young one in her backyard who became friends with her dog and they would play together each day.

  7. So adorable! I love seeing the wildlife pictures.

We have a little baby bunny in our yard and he’s munching on everything in sight. Colleen’s coming home on Friday and she said she hopes he’s still around when she gets home. We warned her he’ll probably double in size this week if he keeps eating the way he has been.

We live near a wooded area and deer frequently wander into our open backyard. Even our dog, Lulu, and the deer seem to have an understanding not to bother each other.

  18. What a lovely post Vicki, celebrating the magic of nature’s beauty. This morning at 5am, while the light was still dim I saw two young foxes scampering around my backyard, such a beautiful sight. I didn’t take any pics, but yours are gorgeous. Thrilled to see them each spring I bet. 💕

  19. You’re much more tolerant than I am! Having said that, the little fawn I discovered a couple of weeks ago appears to have made himself at home in our yard. We have seen him on several occasions, and he is far less skittish around us than the grownups. Even we’re not so cold-hearted to deny his cuteness!

(He could very well be a she. Either way, the cuteness is undeniable.)
