Stole My Heart 💝

Lauren Scott’s beautiful new book, “King Copper – Our Dog’s Life in Poetry” stole my heart.

Sadly, one of the common denominators in life is loss. When those I care about – friends, family, clients, former students – reach out and share their grief about losing a pet, there’s often a sense of shame about the depth and capacity of the torment. “After all,” (a dear one said recently, speaking about the unexpected passing of her cat), “she was just a pet”.

I saw what she was doing – attempting to minimize her pain with a reductive explanation. Self-talk intended to soothe, with words borrowed from a thoughtless one who used the phrase “just a pet” to offer consolation.

For many of us, our pets embody the qualities we long for in humans; especially those who disappoint us. Caring, loyal and loving, they ask only for those qualities in return – delighted by belly rubs and extra kibble now and then.

I was excited/nervous to read Lauren’s tribute to her beloved Copper.

Excited because I know it was a labor of utmost love for Lauren.

Nervous because I knew “King Copper” would prompt tears. Lauren writes with powerful poignancy.

I embraced every word. Some tore at me, expressions familiar and raw about losing a predictable household rhythm…wrapped in fur.

But so many words made me smile.

Scratch that.

Grin.

I’m keeping my copy of “King Copper” at my desk, sitting next to my favorite basket. Such a face…such a sweet soul. Maybe he’ll find his way to a bookshelf, but not yet.

This post is more than praise.

It’s my heartfelt endorsement…perhaps a plea. “King Copper” is a worthy addition to your family library. A book you’ll want to recommend – just as I have – to dear ones experiencing loss. There’s comfort on every page, thanks to Lauren and her family. Thanks to Copper himself:

“I never went away; I’m sitting by your side.

My love for you runs far and wide; I’ll never go astray.”

“Always By Your Side”, p. 40

  5. Your praise of King Copper, the dog and the book, reminds us of our attachment and need for such relationships. So it has been for ages.

In The Odyssey, Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, is not the only creature waiting and hoping for the master’s return, now 20 years since he left Ithaca for the war against Troy.

Argos is the only one who recognizes Odysseus in disguise upon his arrival at the palace. Both have aged, but Argos wags his tail in joy and then quietly dies, his life fulfilled.

The scene is beautifully portrayed in the recent movie, The Return.

  10. Oh, Vicki, what a Sunday surprise! I’m teary from reading your amazing review – teary from joy that my collection touched your heart, and teary from still missing Copper. “Always by Your Side” still gets to me, along with the photo of my son and Copper. But any photos of my family with our family member “wrapped in fur” still get to me. Sigh…thank you SO much for supporting me and immersing yourself into Copper’s world. I know he feels the love, and I still wear his dog tag around my neck on a sterling silver chain (the photo in the book). Call it silly; call it whatever…but it feels right. I appreciate you so much! Hugs and much love! ❤️🤎❤️

Years ago, when I was a new manager, a staff member had a pet bird that died. This young lady lived alone, and that bird was her world. She was devastated by the loss. It was an important lesson for me on the importance of pets in our lives.

    2. Hi Lori, Vicki’s review is stunning and reaffirms that my collection and Copper’s story is touching hearts. I’ll tell you that the book begins with lots of joyful poems, some silly limericks, all when Copper was with us. But then it segues into sorrow when I began writing through the grief. It really helped, but I cried…a lot. So, for the latter section, have tissues nearby. But then the tone lifts at the end because we know he’s no longer in pain and will forever live in our hearts. Unfortunately, loss is part of life, and it hurts beyond words. But I included photos with our family and Copper that will bring a smile. Anyway, I hope I haven’t scared you, and if it’s too much, then no worries. But I appreciate your support, and if you read the collection, I hope you feel the way Vicki does. Hugs to you both! ❤️🤎

    2. Hi Jennie, I agree with you about Vicki’s review. I’m still enjoying the glow. I’m so sorry to hear about Harry, but I bet he’s met Copper and they’re frolicking around in green meadows. He was a mix of chocolate lab and another breed we never knew. But we thought maybe a Vizsla. That’s why his coat was more copper colored than dark chocolate. He came with the name, Copper, so we kept it for obvious reasons. But we chose dark chocolate for the covers of the book because any lighter shade didn’t work. 🙂 Thank you for reading. ❤️
