Book Review: Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs

Kym Gordon Moore’s written a delightful story in her latest book, “Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs“.

Kym describes the book (written for young readers but oh-so appropriate for ANY readers) as a “purpose-driven teaching tool”. I love that and I think it’s a great way to encapsulate the power of Hennie’s story…a heart song about a beautiful hen, told with Kym’s signature style. Warmth and love. “Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs” is unique–inviting readers to embrace and celebrate differences, with love. A perfect message, I say.

Here’s how Kym describes the book:

Hennie and Her Poetry Eggs: A Story Tale of Courage and Purpose catalyzes conversation. It helps young people embrace their differences and learn how to be compassionate toward others from diverse cultures who may experience bullying and social rejection. While this story serves as a purpose-driven teaching tool to help identify and eliminate the intimidation of bullying, the lessons in this book are strong enough for adults but are intended for young people.

Introducing us to sweet natured farm animals and some less so (wink!), we meet dear Farmer Elijah, and we learn about the pecking order on the farm.

Hennie, our heroine, immediately stole my heart. Hennie forges a unique relationship with Farmer Elijah, learning that he’s felt the taint of being an outcast, too.

I love this description of Farmer Elijah, from page 11:

“He always wore a pair of denim overalls and a worn out straw hat that belonged to his grandfather. He had new hats he could wear, but he felt connected to his grandfather when he wore that special hat.”

Throughout, there were resonant notes — appropriate for readers young and not so young:

  • Hennie was beautiful, unusual, different and maligned for her differences
  • Friends can be more than bystanders — Betty the Pig and sweet Farmer Elijah, reaching out with compassionate hearts
  • Handwritten letters and poetry notes are keepsakes, touchstones
  • Dreams help us understand our gifts and differences
  • Poetry and creative outlets are powerful aides to self-understanding
  • From page 61, encouragement to honor our feelings: “feel it…express it…”
  • An important reminder: It costs nothing to be kind

I’m proud to add “Hennie” to my library and I know she’d be a great addition into your family library, too. Very “giftable” for parents of new little ones…a book which will instill a love of reading with a gentle urging about the power of compassion.
