Slivers on Vacation

Can you see me smiling?

My dear friend Jen is half-way around the world right now, vacationing in Greece and guess what’s riding along, beachside with her? Yup. A copy of Slivers!

I don’t know if you remember Flat Stanley, the sweet cut-out character beloved by elementary school littles. Our Delaney had a Flat Stanley, and he traveled the world, racking up more than a few frequent flyer miles. But only after some serious negotiations. When the assignment popped up in third grade, our young miss declared her strong dislike for the “Stanley-ness” of the task. Delaney wanted to know why her project couldn’t be a “Flat Stephanie”. Oy. That might’ve been the first inkling of her debate acumen, a skill she still possesses. God gave her a triple dose of holding her own and I don’t mind. Now. But I think her teachers may have thought otherwise.

Flat Stanley, err…Stephanie…came to mind yesterday when Jen sent the pic of Slivers on the beach. In Greece. My mind raced. I wondered where other copies of Slivers may have traveled. So much fun!

Jen is 1000% on board with my sharing, but I’m still working on sidelining my concerns. I’ve never been to Greece and my mind’s a whirr, wondering what sort of trouble the meddlesome slivers might conjure, on the loose a few thousand miles away.

Jen will keep me posted, I’m sure. Think good thoughts for her, will you?

P.S. Coming soon? Lovely reviews, thanks to Mary K. Doyle and Nancy Nauman. Both Mary and Nancy did the ‘deep dive’ and recently read both Surviving Sue and Slivers. Wow. A double dose of Vicki. More on their kind words in upcoming posts.

  1. The book couldn’t have found a better place, the site of the first democracy, sort of. See if your friend can get a book cover autograph from Socrates! Of course, he didn’t write, so that might be a stretch. Continued good luck for a book with legs!

    1. Good golly — yes! I need a healthy afternoon giggle. I’m sitting here plotting, planning, pondering trying to be satisfied with a chickpea blondie brownie (I’ll need to tell you about these…umm…”treats”) and an iced coffee but what I really needed was a dose of Melannnnnnnieeeeeeeeee! xo! 💝😜💝

  10. Greece! If Slivers can make the trip to Greece, doesn’t that mean you get a free plane ticket and lodgings to go there too. It’s only right! Ha, ha. Pretty cool to image the far off places your book has traveled. From an idea in your head to the laptop to the press to other countries. Very cool indeed.

  12. You’re an international hit now, Vicki. Meanwhile, one of my buddies took a picture of my book in the bargain 25 cent rack from a local thrift store. That gave me a good laugh. I wish I knew that particular book’s history.

You’re talking to an old 2nd and 3rd grade teacher who knows all about Flat Stanley books, a popular choice among many students.

And yes! I knew when the Flat Stanley thought crossed my mind, you most of all would understand! As for the bargain bin? Oof! Good thing our friends know we can take a joke, right?!?

  15. Oh how wonderful! I love the idea of a “Traveling Slivers” feed. Get readers to send in pictures of them reading along with the location. It would be fascinating to see where in the world Slivers is getting to next. 💚

  16. Well, I can tell you that one has found its way to your namesake town in Wisconsin.

I’m a little over 1/3 of the way through, by the way, but I’m reading another book at the same time. I almost never double-dip like that, but I really wanted to see what all the Slivers hype was about. I’m really enjoying it!

I do have to say, though…I’m the weird kid who preferred his Pop-Tarts unfrosted. Plain strawberry FTW!

    1. You are making me grin on so many levels…”double-dip” and your love of unfrosted Pop-Tarts! Although you’re at odds with one character in Slivers about frosting, I must say agree with you — all the way! Thank you SO much for reading, Mark. xo! 💝😊💝
