Classic Rewind: Singing in the Lifeboats

Every now and then, a piece of writing, a post from the past still speaks to me. I smile when I think of these as my very own ‘classic rewinds’. Coming at you on this ICYMI-M (In Case You Missed It Monday). First published in February, 2023.

Singing in the Lifeboats

At first blush, this quote from Voltaire?  It’s pretty dismal.  Life = shipwreck?  Yeah, maybe some days…but do we need to dwell on it?  But darn it all, those smart ones, like Voltaire, with just fourteen words, he propels me from despair to delight.  Fourteen words that provide just the kick in the pants I need.

Despite my wishful thinking, there’s no bubble wrap for life.  No protective shields.  We go from day to day hoping for the best, riding out the rocky bits and cheering when unexpected pleasantries roll in.  Some might call that having low expectations.  I prefer to think of it as cautious optimism.  Revel in the sweet stuff but don’t expect a steady stream. 😉

Am I alone in this not-quite-pessimistic approach?  I don’t think so. I have a client who continues to navigate one speed bump after another and while her fatigue is showing, her resolve to get through…one way or another…has not.  She epitomizes the heart of the Voltaire quote.

Today as we wrapped up our meeting, she whispered that she had a secret. When the tide is rising and the swell of stress is palpable, undeniable, her antidote is shower singing.  Full volume, full voice and after a good ‘shower sesh’ with her favorite 80’s tunes, she resets.  Calm returns.

Later, I couldn’t summon the exact Voltaire quote, but I remembered something about lifeboats and singing that popped to mind, thanks to my client’s self-care sharing. When I found those fourteen words, I smiled. And then I sent her the quote, which she’d never heard of before. She and Voltaire. Now they’re best buds.

Shit happens.  Shipwrecks happen. Shitwrecks happen? 😉 Yup, but if you can, find the release that works for you.  Belting out Blondie at the top of your lungs?  Works for my sweet client – and who am I to disagree?  And yes – that was a little Eurythmics fun, “Sweet Dreams” …from me…and if I may be so bold…from Voltaire, too.

  3. Well said, Vicki. Voltaire knew. How about group singing in the shower? I guess I should stop, but Voltaire comes close to the water.

  4. I like your brand of cautious optimism. The song in the lifeboat, a run in the rain, a candle in the dead of night, a pinwheel in a hurricane…hope is always present.

  5. I love, love this. I am the eternal optimist and honestly hopeful, trying to see the good in people and situations, but not always easy. I am a personal fan of loud car singing, though in the summer months it can be a challenge with windows down and being stopped at a light )

    1. Oh…I hear you (literally – LOL!) about those stop lights. I decided a year or so ago to do it anyhow…and I end up singing and “car dancing” and yah…often I get strange looks…but every now and then when someone at a light puts their window down and joins in? Magic! And for we…the ever-optimistic? I swear it fills my joy bucket to keep looking for the sunshine-y moments. Thank you for being such a dear blogging friend who serves up loads of sunshine, Beth. I’m so glad Pete helped me find you. xo! 🥰

  6. Dance like nobody’s watching, sing in the shower (or the car with open windows), live life with abandon— I love it! Now all I have to do is LIVE it. 🌈🦄

  7. I like the cautiously optimistic approach to life. Makes up for not ever having enough bubble wrap to get all the way around me. Oh, and I sing in the shower too, usually movie theme songs!

  9. “Revel in the sweet stuff but don’t expect a steady stream.” My dear Vicki, this is wonderful! That’s where I operate nowadays and it’s the best place to be. Sinking on the sinking ship while joyfully patching up the holes. It’s such an effective strategy, really.

    1. I love that you ‘get’ me. Have I shared that lately? Thank you, Erin. Yup. I’ll be hole-patchin’ with you, my friend…and we’ll sing or hum…or whatever. Teamwork! xo! 🥰

  10. Singing? When things go bad for me I go right to the “Last Supper,” and literally stand in the light of the refrigerator with a fork and have a little private communion with the leftovers. Singing might be way better for my cholesterol. Worth a try, but I’ll keep my fork ready, just in case. Hugs, C

    1. Have you been peeking at me? LOL! I’d say the same is true here…when in doubt, a snack always helps, right? A “private little communion with the leftovers”. So good — and I know that move! I’m with you, dear Cheryl. Fork at the ready! 😜🥰😜

  11. Thanks Vicki. I love the Voltaire quote and your “Revel in the sweet stuff but don’t expect a steady stream.” Oh how helpful! Very recently I have been knocked for six by an event only to find support and true friendship surrounding me. I’d forgotten it was there but it had gone into hiding until it was needed. Your quote and comments are really helpful too – positive pointers in so many different places. 👌🥰

    1. Ahh…aren’t you the dear one, I’m sorry that you’ve had a rough patch…but how sweet to know we can find the caring souls when we need them. Thank you for the lovely feedback, Margaret. It means so much. Xo! ❤️

  12. It speaks to me again. If for no other reason, I absolutely love love your subhead: “Shit happens. Shipwrecks happen.” In addition, I love the image of someone going through challenges who may be sinking, but whose resolve is still strong and manages to overcome. Oh, I can definitely relate to that. Very close to home. Ha, ha. Yes, Voltaire and you are definitely onto something. Thank you.

    1. Thank you for being one of the two-fer readers of this post, Brian. I’m glad it still resonates a bit…especially (and not surprisingly) the ‘shit happens…shipwrecks happen’… LOL. Here’s to sticking together through the ups and downs, my friend! xo! 🥰

      1. I’m thinking more and more that that is the real lesson of life. Not the fancy things. Not the experiences. But finding a way to stick through the ups and downs. So simple, but direct and to the point. Insert face palm here. Ha, ha.

  14. Amazing quote to think about. Although I had upsetting events happen around me, we managed to find the sweet stuff the past few days with long walks and a hike in the nature’s preserve.

  16. Vicki,
When I was going through … an incredibly rough patch … my therapist suggested meds to help me through it. I declined. Instead, I listened to the heavy metal station in my car (pretty damn loudly) as I drove to and from. I didn’t even like heavy metal, but it was able to drown out my thoughts, which is what I needed most at the time. And that got me through. I rarely listen to heavy metal today, but when I hear a song from that time (late 80’s and early 90’s), I turn it up and sing along. Turns out that I got to know some of these songs pretty well without actually meaning to. That is why heavy metal will forever hold a very dear place in my heart. I’ve never heard that quote before, but so glad you shared it. I’m with Voltaire and your client! Music can get me from one state to another pretty quickly. Mona

    1. Oh, Mona…I can see how leaning into heavy metal was a great focal point and an outlet for you – I love it. I bet when you hear familiar songs from that period in your life they’re like anthems for you? And heck yah — singing along in full voice? I’m with you! xo and big hugs! 🥰🥰🥰
